This has got to be one of the most thoroughly researched and presented books I have ever read.
That being said, I have one small gripe about the way Bryson categorizes all fluorides together as if they were one chemical, as someone who understands very basic chemistry. A fluoride is any compound containing the element fluorine, all of which are distinctly different chemicals (though they are primarily all poisonous, since fluorine is the most reactive element on the periodic table and therefore the most useful to industry, but also most destructive to organic life). Are they all the same? That is like saying that table salt and household bleach are the same thing, since they are both chlorides (both contain chlorine). Try sprinkling household bleach on your food to see how that works out. Notable fluorides are sodium fluoride, fluosilicic acid (most commonly added to water supplies, and a byproduct of phosphate fertilizer production in Florida -- the stuff they scrub from the smokestacks) CFCs and freon, even Prozac and Paxil, etc. Paxil is poisinous, but it won't exactly melt your skin off the way uranium hexafluoride will (at least not in the short term. Who knows what its long term effects are). All are poisonous to varying degrees, but are all lumped together as "fluoride" even though they are all distinctly different chemicals and thus have distinctly different toxicities. Bryson says in his intro that he does this in the interest of simplifying things, but you can't do a study on "fluoride," you have to treat each individual chemical for what it is, a different chemical. I have yet to find a single study on fluosilicic acid and its effects on the brain and nervous system, yet they are injecting it into our water supply! I believe that lumping all of these chemicals in one group is purposefully done and serves to confuse people, politicians and dentists alike into not caring where it comes from, thinking it is all the same.
Critics say that fluoride is found naturally in water supplies, and this is misleading. Calcium fluoride is found naturally, not fluosilicic acid, which is the manmade byproduct toxic slush we are putting in our water supply. Both are poisonous, but both are also distinctly different. I am surprised nobody has asked this question or brought this up in all of the research I have done. Somebody please correct me if I am wrong here...
Still, great book. Water fluoridation must end regardless of the fluorine compound used.
