Only the Super-Rich Can Save Us! Hardcover – September 22, 2009
Purchase options and add-ons
So begins the vivid fictional account by political activist and bestselling author Ralph Nader that answers the question, "What if?" What if a cadre of superrich individuals tried to become a driving force in America to organize and institutionalize the interests of the citizens of this troubled nation? What if some of America's most powerful individuals decided it was time to fix our government and return the power to the people? What if they focused their power on unionizing Wal-Mart? What if a national political party were formed with the sole purpose of advancing clean elections? What if these seventeen superrich individuals decided to galvanize a movement for alternative forms of energy that will effectively clean up the environment? What if together they took on corporate goliaths and Congress to provide the necessities of life and advance the solutions so long left on the shelf by an avaricious oligarchy? What could happen?
This extraordinary story, written by the author who knows the most about citizen action, returns us to the literature of American social movements—to Edward Bellamy, to Upton Sinclair, to John Steinbeck, to Stephen Crane—reminding us in the process that changing the body politic of America starts with imagination.

About the author

Named by The Atlantic as one of the hundred most influential figures in American history, and by Time and Life magazines as one of the most influential Americans of the twentieth century, Ralph Nader has helped us drive safer cars, eat healthier food, breathe better air, drink cleaner water, and work in safer environments for more than four decades.
The crusading attorney first made headlines in 1965 with his book Unsafe at Any Speed, a scathing indictment that lambasted the auto industry for producing unsafe vehicles. The book led to congressional hearings and automobile safety laws passed in 1966, including the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. He was instrumental in the creation of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CSPC), and the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA). Many lives have been saved by Nader's involvement in the recall of millions of unsafe consumer products, including defective motor vehicles, and in the protection of laborers and the environment. By starting dozens of citizen groups, Ralph Nader has created an atmosphere of corporate and governmental accountability.
Ralph Nader's most recent books include, Wrecking America (with Mark Green) the Nader Family Cookbook, How the Rats Vetoed Congress, and Breaking Through Power.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2010Full disclosure: Ralph Nader is a good friend. Please don't mistake that for any pretention because Ralph is truly everyone's good friend. Even those who don't realize it. He should have been the automaker's good friend. So too with the bankers, the insurance companies, the airlines, the unions, to a lot of people who were ultimately done in either by their own myopia or by venal people in their midst. Ralph is one of the giants of American history and will always have his place among the great.
His book is a wonderful odyssey into the near future and it is an enjoyable one. First of all, Ralph has already shown that he can write more than a legal brief. Anyone who has read his "The Seventeen Traditions" can attest to the beauty of his prose and to the deeper values that he represents. Second, he reveals more of himself in this new book than simply the uncompromising crusader he has been all his life (and all of our lives, as well). We now see him as Saul Alinsky with a vision for a better world. Alinsky was the pre-eminent community organizer of his day and actually founded a school for local activists which taught skills like how to get people to a meeting, anger the opposition enough to get them to respond, and how handle the press. There is a lot of Alinsky in Ralph.
But there is also a lot of Edward Bellamy in "How the Super Rich Can Save Us". Bellamy was perhaps the first among equals of utopians writing in the late 19th century who lifted his readers out of the horrors of the industrial revolution toward a vision of a better future.
So we now see a 21st Century Ralph Nader: a Saul Alinsky with a vision of a better world and an Edward Bellamy armed with superior legal talent and plenty of street political savvy.
I just love it. This is the kind of guy who can cut through the bloviation and tell us, in the great words of Larry the Cable Guy, how to "get 'er done".
In a world of chaos, we need to anticipate what comes next. Whatever it will be, it will come from the citizenry who are giving up on many of the old institutions and rules that govern them. Ralph's book is a realistic utopia and can be enabled by those who have the resources to move it along. None of the proposed actions and results are pie-in-the-sky. They are very real. And he has an uncanny knack for understanding the motives of the super-rich and others. His knowledge of popular culture is impressive who has been perceived as so focused on economic and political issues.
Here is the final test for a book like this: can anyone really deny that Ralph Nader's world, as described in "Only the Super-Rich Can Save Us", would be decidedly better than where we are now?
"No", said the billionaire who has made too mcuh money and must now take on the challenge of building a better world.
"No", said the business person paying too much in taxes and receiving very little (if any) payback.
"No", said the union organizer trying to still be relevant in a changing world.
"No", said the entrepreneur who needs to be surrounded with creative ideas.
"No", said the tea-partier who is fighting against everything but is not quite sure what he or she is for.
"No", said the pollster who just loved this book.
I am going to give this as gifts throughout 2010.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2022OK, to be clear first off. I LIKE Ralph. I have one of his signed books that is not fiction, like this one. (Ralph. Never write fiction again). He has done much in his career and is clearly a good guy. Wish there clones of him in Congress/Senate. That being said, he has written maybe one of the worst books ever written. Other 1 star reviews have pretty much nailed it. First of all...700+ pages? Maybe if its a GREAT book you never want to end. This book could have EASILY been shortened to 200 pages of just no-wasted space story. Would have reached way more people. But the entire premise is just so ridiculous. First of all, Nader the champion of the poor and downtrodden, and a person who greatly detests super rich meatballs, is writing an entire book about the Super rich saving us?! wTF?! His crew of super rich is ridiculous. Bill Cosby, Yoko ONo? The owner of Sams club? Some other super d-listers? They arent even SUPEr rich. I dont think even half the ones he listed were EVER billionaires? They have like ZERO pull or influence even when book was written. But look at the actual super rich mentioned. Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, George soros. What have they dont to help the planet in the last 13 yrs since book has been written? News flash Ralph. The super rich dont want to help the planet! They all want to help THEMSELVES. But some of the worst parts are the actual dialogue he gives them. Bill Cosby (yes, this one especially didnt age well!) literally says " national & international distinctions aren't clear anymore, whether were talking about peace or arms control or my tormented ancestral home of Africa or WTO globalization and our loss of sovereignty". WOW. Try not to die laughing as you read that. Ralph, the book would have been way better with fictional rich characters, not real ones we already know ( who are mostly a-holes, and don't talk anything like you make them speak in the book). Book is just SO bad.

The main idea of this book is perfect but it is a long read and I haven't finished it yet. What a shame more rich people don't read this book and put into play the ideas. Would make a lot of people happier in the States.
