The bestselling author of Stranger at the Gate provides an inside expose of the Christian Right's agenda-and a playbook in how to resist it.

This Fall's midterm elections will see much discussion about the enhanced power of the Christian fundamentalist Right, leaving many people to wonder: just who are these people and what exactly do they want? What are their ultimate goals? The Reverend Mel White, a deeply religious man who sees fundamentalism as "evangelical Christian orthodoxy gone cultic," believes that it is not a stretch to say that the true goal of today's fundamentalists is to break down the wall that separates church and state, superimpose their "moral values" on the U.S. Constitution, replace democracy with theocratic rule, and ultimately create a new "Christian America" in their image. White's new book, Religion Gone Bad, is a wake-up call to all of us to take heed.

White is singularly qualified to write this expose of the Christian Right because he himself was a true believer who served the evangelical movement as pastor, professor, filmmaker, television producer, author, and ghostwriter for such fundamentalist leaders as Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, and Billy Graham, all of whom he got to know well. As he writes, "These are not just Neocons dressed in religious drag. These men see themselves as gurus called by God to rescue America from unrighteousness. They believe this is a Christian nation that must be returned forcibly to its Christian roots."

He is also a gay man, who made news when he came out more than twelve years ago. White has gained a unique understanding of the fundamentalist agenda because, since the fall of "godless Communism," homosexuality and abortion have become the primary targets through which fundamentalists have created fear, raised money, and mobilized recruits. Religion Gone Bad documents the thirty-year war that fundamentalist Christians have waged against homosexuality and gays and lesbians and offers dramatic, heartbreaking evidence that fundamentalist leaders-Protestant and Catholic alike-are waging nothing less than a "holy war" (jihad) against sexual minorities. By focusing on the current plight of gay people in this country, White addresses the wider issue that fundamentalist Christianity-like fundamentalist Islam-has become a threat not just to gays, but to all Americans who disagree with fundamentalist Christian "values."

Best book on the history of the evil Christian Right.

Religion gone Bad by Mel White. I debated about even buying this book. I really thought it might be a waste of money in the end. Because I am not a religious person but an a confirmed agnostic. I simply did not care to get into something that had too much religion attached to it. I read the author's bio that indicated he was a practicing Evangelical Minister as well as being a Gay man. But, I decided to buy it anyway and if it got to be too heavy into religion or too preachy, I would just put it aside and call it a day. I always have that option.
But, on the other hand, I could relate to the guy on a personal level too. We non-believers have been in the closet with the gays for a lot of years too. People look at us like we are some kind of freak, when we say we have no religion. Either that or try and convert us. They can't fathom any normal person not believing in Christianity. They imagine we live desolate/immoral/ miserable/chaotic lives without their God. They cannot imagine any of us being remotely happy. But, we non-believers are really tired and fed up with Fundamentalist Christian's shoving their religion down our throats. It's like the old saying goes 'know your enemy' and I think this type of Christian has become the enemy of all who believe in democracy. The fact remains, when one minorities civil rights are in jeopardy, all American's civil rights are in jeopardy. That type of person eventually gets around to you sooner or later.
In being a member of American's United for a Separation of Church and State I have always had a keen interest in anything involving the Separation of Church and State. I have read Barry Lynn's book 'Piety and Politics' which was in this vein and extremely good. My parents were ultra religious people, who would have been horrified if our family Minister had told them who to vote for come election time. In fact, my father would have gotten up, walked out of church and never gone back, it was not acceptable behavior in the 50's for a Minister to even give his opinion on political issues of the day. My parents were firmed believers in the Constitution and my sister and I were raised to revere it as much as the Bible. So I have never understood why the newer Christian chooses not to accept Separation of Church and State that has allowed their religion to grow in this country for centuries, simply because their activist minister tells them this is a 'Christian Nation' and separation is a myth thought up by liberals.
White has a too much religion in his book for my tastes, which is something I didn't notice in Lynn's book. Therefore, I will give White's book only four stars, which is the only criticism I have for his book. The book is one of the better ones I have read recently for understanding the mindset of the average Evangelical Christian. So it hasn't been a waste of money, it was well spent. The Evangelical mindset has been and always will be a complete mystery. How they can claim to be such patriots and pick and choose which parts of the Constitution they want to believe. In my mind, you either buy it all or forget about being a patriot. How they can allow their religious leaders to delude them that we are a 'Christian Nation' when clearly there is no reference to God or Christianity in the Constitution. All it says in the Constitution is 'Creator' that each and every religion on the face of the earth has a different version of. But, it doesn't refer to the Christian one anymore than it refers to the Hindu one Brahma. Other than their activist Minister told them that's the way things are and most were buying it without questioning.
I will admit it was one of the reasons I bought it was to try and understand where these Fundamentalist Christian's were coming from due to their being such a big threat to our freedoms. But, every time I decided to put the book away and give up on it entirely, I was really growing weary of wading through the biblical passages. The author came up with yet more information that made me forge ahead and encouraged me to read the book. I will rate it right up there with some of the books that have left religion out of it due to being extremely informative. I have picked up a large amount of information which is what I was looking for to begin with.
I am still a non-believer and it hasn't changed my mind a bit on that. But, it has been an extremely informative book as to what has happened to Christianity? Over the years I have wondered about that too. Christianity is nothing at all like I remember it being as child. It's become a caricature of what it used to be in the 50's. Something that really makes me sad in ways. Christianity used to stand for something noble, about all it stands for anymore is unbridled greed, uncontrolled ambition, copious lies, deceitful practices, power hungry clergy, duplicitous con artists selling a product to gullible people, corporate religion running amok that demands more freebies from the tax strapped taxpayer to support it, and bigotry/intolerance. All the qualities I was raised to believe were not very 'Christ like' so therefore not Christian. I don't think is going to do religion any favors in the end either because it's turning a lot of people off.

Mel White is a national treasure. His life story is amazing and this book comes out of his career as a ghost writer for the likes of Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson before he came out to the world as gay. His personal story is very inspiring for anyone that has struggled with sexuality and at the same time wants to stay a committed member of a church. This is a terrific book, written in his very conversational and personal style, that effectively unmasks the shameful treatment given to gay people by the church--any church with the exception of the Metropolitan Community Church and the Unitarians! He, like Bishop John Shelby Spong (see "Living in Sin"), demolishes the Biblical injunctions, so-called, against same gender relations. It's a kind of sweet irony that the trend to legalize same sex marriage has now been accomplished in 30 states and will be in all before another five years pass. The courts, at least, recognize this as a civil rights issue, plain and simple. White's book is a very worthwhile addition to the literature.

Mel White is a really good and readable author. I really wish I had read this book during the 1990's and early 2000's when the events chronicled in the book were taking place. Reading it now and looking back on that time, I can see that the threats to our liberties that the author talks about are still ramping up, but somewhat more "under cover" and not as militant and "in your face". To me, the more covert style being used now may be even more dangerous, as most of us don't really notice and put the pieces together. With Mel's analysis it's much easier to see what is still going on and how much we still need to protect the liberties we have, rather than taking them for granted and losing them to those that want so much to take them away.

This book is a very telling tale of the so called Christian Right and its plans to control America and even the world. It is written from the perspective of one who has been among the leaders of the movement and once supported them whether he wanted to or not. The only problem I had with the book is that it dwells on the anti-homosexual agenda of the Christian right. Since it is written by a homosexual that might be understandable but I'm afraid that many readers might be lost about a third or half way through the book. The problems that homosexuals face in this country are tremendous but I'm afraid that Mr. White overdoes it. I'm a heterosexual but I sympathize with their plight but banging people over the head with that one subject tends to make one numb to the problem instead of more sensitive.

This book, years ago, predicted what would happen to the LGBT community if the far right ever got significant power. Rev. Mel got it right. People say, "Oh, stop whining. No one is killing you". Not yet. The Holocaust didn't start with the death camps. Little by little, Jews in Germany had their civil rights stripped from them, building on a senseless, centuries-long prejudice (read Martin Luther's tirades against the Jews--I have--and they've proven to be, um, enlightening). The same thing is starting here. And not just LGBTs--already migrant children are being torn from their parents and thrown into concentration camps. Think it can't happen here? Think again. It can and is.
