Climate, sea level, and ice sheets have always changed, and the changes observed today are less than those of the past. Climate changes are cyclical and are driven by the Earth’s position in the galaxy, the sun, wobbles in the Earth’s orbit, ocean currents, and plate tectonics. In previous times, atmospheric carbon dioxide was far higher than at present but did not drive climate change. No runaway greenhouse effect or acid oceans occurred during times of excessively high carbon dioxide. During past glaciations, carbon dioxide was higher than it is today. The non-scientific popular political view is that humans change climate. Do we have reason for concern about possible human-induced climate change?
This book’s 504 pages and over 2,300 references to peer-reviewed scientific literature and other authoritative sources engagingly synthesize what we know about the sun, earth, ice, water, and air. Importantly, in a parallel to his 1994 book challenging “creation science,”
Telling Lies for God, Ian Plimer describes Al Gore’s book and movie An Inconvenient Truth as long on scientific “misrepresentations.” “Trying to deal with these misrepresentations is somewhat like trying to argue with creationists,” he writes, “who misquote, concoct evidence, quote out of context, ignore contrary evidence, and create evidence ex nihilo.”

Ian Plimer has written a powerful detailed book thoroughly debunking the anthropogenic (human caused) global warming theory. Dr. Plimer's book is generally very readable as well as providing extensive coverage of geology, earth history, and climate science. The book is extremely well referenced with over 2000 references notes.

Dr. Plimer devotes a long chapter to history (the history of the earth climate), the sun (how the sun ands its magnetic field effects the earth's temperature, ice (the ice is not melting dangerously), water (the sea level is not changing much at all), and air. Each chapter covers its area and topics very extensively. These long chapters also quite well written. However each chapter assumes the reader has a little knowledge about chemistry and science in general. A minor critique would be that the history and earth chapters are not quite as clear as the same material presented in Doug Hoffman and Allen Simmons The Resilient Earth: Science, Global Warming and the Fate of Humanity. A little earth history knowledge would be helpful to the reader to thoroughly understand these chapters.

Dr. Plimer provides a lot of detailed information. Like other books refuting the anthropogenic global warming (AGW) theory, although much more extensively, Dr. Plimer provides the factual material and science refuting the AGW theory. The refutations include (but are not limited to) the fact that both carbon dioxide and temperature were much higher than present for much of earth's history when extensive life was present on the planet; carbon dioxide does not stay in the atmosphere for long but is absorbed by the sea and ground after a few years; the present carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere is lower than it has been for most of earth's history; most carbon dioxide is in the oceans and rocks, not in the air; anthropogenic carbon dioxide is a very small part of total carbon dioxide; the solar magnetic field effects earth temperatures much more than carbon dioxide; glacier ice has not been melting extensively in recent decades; sea levels have barely risen in recent centuries and decades; and sea levels are effected by much more factors than earth temperature and melting ice.

Dr. Plimer also wrote a very interesting and informative concluding chapter on extreme environmentalism as a pernicious religion. He compares environmentalism to Puritanism.

Is sum Dr. Plimer has written an extremely informative and detailed reference debunking the anthropogenic global warming theory. His book may be too long and detailed for some general readers. These readers may want to consult the briefer works of Fred Singer Unstoppable Global Warming: Every 1,500 Years, Updated and Expanded Edition and Ian Wishart Air Con: The Seriously Inconvenient Truth About Global Warming. But the material covered in this work is immense. For in depth knowledge the source is Dr. Plimer.

Dr. Plimer's well proven thesis can be stated as thus: carbon dioxide is not a pollutant, but an ingredient necessary for life. The book is a major light to disperse the present ecofreak darkness.

When I first opened Ian Plimer's book and looked at the range of topics and questions covered, I wondered whether Plimer had not bitten off a bit too much. Plimer's credentials are exceptional, and his grasp of a wide swath of the scientific literature is impressive. Here's why I think that this book is a must-read for anyone who is seriously interested in the climate change debate:

    (1) Plimer is the first to say - and frequently repeats - that the science behind the many earth-centered and cosmic forces that potentially impact the climate of our planet is not settled. In many cases, for example the geologic forces of the ocean floor which accounts for 70% of the earth's surface, both the actual forces and the impact of those forces on earth's climate simply have not been well catalogued, much less measured. His point is that absent such understanding, we are unable to plot a baseline for climate change and therefore dire predictions for impending climatic catastrophe must be taken with a grain of salt.
    (2) Plimer presents a good overview of both geologic and natural history - the earth, ice, water, air composition, and solar emissions. Within this he cites a wealth of scientific research - over 2,000 citations in case one wishes to verify his statements - to document that the current temperature of the earth's surface and the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are well within the bounds of both distant and recent past history. In the past these have not led to disasterous consequences and therefore there is no evidence to support arguments that they will in the future.
    (3) Plimer contrasts the substantial data and evidence which he has been able to gather with the relatively sparce evidence that the IPCC has gathered to support their findings. He points out that the scientific summaries of the IPCC reports do not support their recommendations for policy makers, and further that the scientific citations used by the IPCC do not even support their scientific findings.
    (4) Plimer points out the potential cost - both to humanity and to the ecosystem - of rushing to judgement based on bad science.

If you are seriously interested in the climate change debate, it is critical that you read this book. While there are portions that are difficult to follow, overall I found the book both readable and witty - certainly the fastest reading 500-page scientific book that I've ever taken on.

Very technical but readable book bij professor Plimer about the intricacies of climate on earth, from the perspective of a geologist. Broad outlook over time and literally, space, that brings the current climate warnings into needed perspective that is shunned by most press and organisations reporting on the subject. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars The climate bible by Ian Plimer
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 9, 2011
Heaven And Earth: Global Warming - The Missing Science
Professor Ian Plimer is Australia's most respected geologist and his book is all about the real science behind the history of the Earth and the evolution of the climate over 4.5 billion years. If one translates the time that the humankind existed against the age of the Earth in terms of 24 hour clock, we have arrived about 2 minutes to midnight. If we furthermore take account the time that we have so far have been pushing CO2 into atmosphere, we are now talking about milliseconds of the 24 hours of the evolution time. Furthermore, CO2 is officially labelled as a trace gas, since it is present in the atmosphere at 0.04%, and of that 0.04%, 97% is produced by nature and only 3% by human activities. So if you take all this numbers into your calculator, you will see very quickly how absurd is to think that we can somehow control the climate and affect the ongoing evolution of the Earth's climate in any shape or form. So if you are interested in really understanding the forces that affect the climate and are willing to use your own brain rather than the preaching of the media, this book is the must reading. Every argument is referenced to the relevant scientific paper, if you are able to follow the scientific arguments it is all there, if not Ian Plimer does excellent `translation' of the key points. This book is not designed for people who expect 1 page explanation of the history of the Earth climate, since the climate has been changing for last 4.5 billion years, and it will continue to do so for another 9.5 billion years, according to the most recent estimates. I would describe this book as the bible of the climate changes as we know it.
