A simple walk through Washington, D.C. began a profound journey of personal discovery and renewal for Newt Gingrich, one of America's most influential politicians and commentators. At theNational Archives, the immortal words from the Declaration of Independence that we "are endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable rights," jumped off the page and into his heart with the simple truth that from day one in our country's history, the Author of freedom was not the state nor even the Founding Fathers. Our basic human rights and freedoms were-and are-"Creator-endowed." Gingrich sounds a clarion call for us to recognize that the life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness that we hold so dear are inseparable from a sincere and humble acknowledgement that these gifts are only the Creator's to give. As a bonus, the book includes a "walking tour" of Washington, D.C.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This brief mandate by Gingrich, the architect of 1994's conservative congressional manifesto "The Contract with America," opens with a battle cry: "There is no attack on American culture more deadly and more historically dishonest than the secular effort to drive God out of America's public life." The book's arguments are predictable: Gingrich claims that references to God are sprinkled everywhere in our nation's founding documents; that most Americans believe in God; and our classrooms and courtrooms are the laboratories where such belief is being irrevocably eroded. He trots out quotations from founding fathers that suggest their allegiance to Christianity or at least to theism, but conveniently ignores evidence that some of these men—particularly Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson—believed religion should have little, if any, role in the nation's government. If the book's thesis is tired and essentially unpersuasive, its unique contribution is its innovative, even brilliant, method of organization. Gingrich presents his arguments as a "walking tour" of the nation's capital, beginning with the National Archives and winding through the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials, Supreme Court, Library of Congress, Capitol, White House and other sites. This structure does much to freshen up a book that is otherwise indistinguishable from prior offerings by Pat Robertson and David Barton. (Aug. 22)

I enjoyed this book so much, I have never been to Washington or our capitol or any of these places in the book. I loved the info and hope I will get to visit all the places mentioned in this book before I leave this world. How could anyone want to destroy this beautiful country? Our GOD will keep this country safe. Let's never forget to pray to HIM and praise HIM for HIS goodness and our safety.

Great book and well put together as Mr. Gingrich reminds us of God's presence in our history as Our Creator, Foundation, and Supreme Being. The introduction itself brought out some interesting truths brought out in the book,The Fate of America in the Ninth Hour which I believe makes a great sequel to Rediscovering God in America. The book is truly a profound and surprising walk of discovery and it lets you see how so far America has become from God. America's sins has placed has placed a wall between her and God and as a result tragedies are befalling us left and right because of moral deterioration, injustice, spiritual decline, hypocrisy, oppression, greed, spiritual adultery and so on. "We the People" now operate in society as though God does not exist, and has cast the truth to the ground and as a result we reap disasters, diseases, chaos, new diseases, violence, distress, and deaths. If My people who are called by My name would turn from their wicked ways then shall they hear from heaven. We won't hear from heaven until we bring God back in the picture. We must put him back in the schools, governments, etc.

God made America and God entrusted her into the hands of great men in history past but somewhere down the line something went wrong, and another god was picked up and placed on the back of the dollar bill with a plan to take this world in another direction away from God. Now we have the antichrist spirit of this god at work in the earth through the elite groups in high places of power (in the judicial, political, religious system, etc.) who are in a constant effort to rid God and Jesus out of everything. They cast the truth of God and His Word to the ground and are at work to bring this country under enslavement to a godless system God despises. God will not share His glory with another and is calling America to come from under the spell of this antichrist god in the earth.

It is great that God has a few godly men in power of position in high places who uphold God's standards, as we need more and more. "We the People" were called to rule, and have dominion in the earth and not succumb to another power. "We the People," created to rule and reign in the earth must take our positions as a people strong and mighty to do whatever we can in God's power to fight these powers that be---antichrist spirit and bring America back to God's original intent--a God system, not a godless world system of control. Unless we do something we will continue to see even worst things happening in our present, in our tomorrow and in our future because presently in the now 21st Century, America is out of God's divine will.

Now that this book has taken us on a journey of Rediscovering God in America, now "we the people" need to be restored back to God, back to His Principles, back to His will, so we can sing God Bless America and be well on our way to a brighter future for generations to come.

Thank Mr. Gingrich for your reverence of God and His Supreme Being and Authority. Your historical accounts are very educational.

Whatever you may think of Gingrich as a political figure, he does an excellent job of outlining the relationship that Christianity has had with our government from before its founding as shown from the writings of the founding fathers and as shown in the documents, monuments and buildings in Washington DC that make up the core of our governmental infrastructure. He shows clearly from their writings and speeches that are found in Washington DC that while not all of these men were active church-goers, they all had a firm belief in God, and nearly all were Christian. "Separation of Church and State" is not an idea found in any of the founding documents of our country, and the First Amendment did not, from our founding, bar religious expression in the public arena.

Newt's book is an expansion of Chapter 3 in Winning the Future. His whole thesis is that America is the only country in history that credits our freedom to our Creator, those unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It is a very simple but wonderful truth that has faded over time, but is being found again by many, both with religious orientation and secular orientation. It is a wonderful fast read and I would recommend to any American to read once or twice a year. God bless America

This is a great book and should be a text book at schools. Our nation was founded on a belief in God. All the State Constitutions make that statement. In the last 50-60 years we have strayed from that belief and you can see what has happened in our country. We are the Divided States,
not United States.
