Real Change: From the World That Fails to the World That Works Hardcover – December 18, 2007
Purchase options and add-ons
In this no-holds-barred assessment of American politics, Gingrich approaches our nation’s problems with a private-sector mentality and an entrepreneurial spirit, offering commonsense solutions for the issues of today and the challenges of tomorrow.
He lambasts both parties for creating a government of the bureaucrats, by the consultants, and for the special interests” and busts the myth that voters are entrenched in a red state” vs. blue state” mentality. Gingrich exposes the truth: Americans are united on almost every important issue. It’s the politicians who drag us into partisan bickering and away from real change.

"We're standing on the edge of a potential golden age for America. Advances in technology, science, engineering, and medicine hold the promise of benefits our parents couldn't even dream of. If we make the right choices now, America will enjoy a level of prosperity, safety, and freedom unknown to previous generations. But if we make the wrong choices, we will suffer the very serious consequences of a set of challenges we choose to ignore. . . . We the people can force real change and can secure the kind of future America and our children and grandchildren deserve."

The critical problem undermining America's well being, according to the author, is the unresponsive interference of government bureacracies dominated by the labor union mindset. About this there is no question, and I have seen how this mindless turf protection works its way down to the section head level where the mindlessness is enforced and creativity and problem solving solutions are shunned.
The solutions are clear enough. Define the problem, set metrics to measure progress, develop standards of measurable accountability, and work towards goals to get things done. The private sector does it all the time (or they would fail). Pressure needs to be applied on our political leaders from the President to the city clerk to make the necessary changes.
If I had one criticism of the book, it is this. The section on Homeland Security dealing with global Islamic Terrorism and Appendix 8 ("What if? An alternate History of the War since 9/11) should have appeared much earlier in the book. Why? If you think about it, if we don't solve and win the war on terror fast by developing a truly winning strategy, including paying for it by increasing defense spending, the rest of the book won't matter.
It is the defining issue of our time.
Gingrich's description of the change that Mayor Guiliani's Administration brought to law enforcement in New York City in the 1990's was a great example. I can remember how awful and scary it was to go to New York, even midtown Manhattan, back in the bad old days of Abe Beame or David Dinkins. Guiliani's approach, though, took politics out of the problem. Instead, they realized that they were mismatching resources in the police department - the detectives who handled the most serious crimes had day jobs with the weekends off - the criminals worked mostly at night and on weekends! Isn't that classic! By managing for results - lowering the incidence of crime, and applying more resources directly to the problem - getting police into the high crime areas at the times they usually would occur, and getting the career criminal off the streets, Guiliani's Administration made New York City safer, for both residents and visitors. This is just one example of the "out of the box" thinking about important societal problems that politicians usually don't get. Great book!
Newt Gingrich is a brilliant man, full of ideas and action, and this book reflects that. He has had a rather profound impact on America with his time spent in Washington. This book is a compendium of his ideas in different fields. Much of it is spot on as far as I am concerned. Sometimes he fails to mention everything he should mention. He talks about putting people to work as a requirement to receive welfare help. He failed to mention, however, in his discussion of Reagan, that the welfare system can be wound down by deducting a dollar from the welfare payment for every two dollars earned on a job. He also failed to address what happens when for some reason the recipient cannot work, or when a woman's time would be better spent for the good of society, caring for her children for awhile. The book has many examples of this type of too-narrow focus. It is a good starting place because many of his ideas are correct and would be effective.
Gingrich is impossible to reach through the internet, I have discovered. When I want to challenge his ideas, in the hopes that he will see some of the flaws and correct them, I cannot reach him to do this. There seems to be no forum, and trying to contact him through his publisher and by other means has borne no fruit.
There are some weaknesses. You may be aware that he got taken in by the "global warming" faction some time back. He actually had photos or videos (not sure which) made with Nancy Pelosi, promoting the idea we absolutely HAD to stop global warming. He also wrote Contract with the Earth, which I have read, and was deeply troubled by. This book seems to indicate he has developed his thinking on this, and no longer swallows this bogus self-serving "science". Good.
Gingrich has gone on to establish a few organizations. The latest one is called AmericaStrong, and he is a prominent leader in that group. I got their email today. They're offering discounts on all sorts of things, and there appears to be an underlying assumption that I am BUYING these things and would welcome a discount. What if I am just plain NOT INTERESTED in these things? Never occurred to them. The organization is introduced through a survey. The first question is about Chick-fil-A. Either you support it whoelheartedly, or you are against it. There was no room for me to say, yeah, I support their right to their opinions, but I can't buy their food because it contains numerous poisonous ingredients. It was a black and white thing. The site appears to be full of such assumptions. Perhaps Gingrich is a little too black-and-white in his thinking, or something.
Then there is the idea, promoted at AmericaStrong and other places, that everyone should pay some income tax so everyone has skin in the game, as they put it. What if NOBODY should pay income tax? Again, they apparently never thought of that. This same idea that everyone should pay is also reflected in this book.
The biggest problem I had with the book is that he seems to be thoroughly Establishment in his thinking on health care. This book was published before the current president and his supporters imposed a massive and repressive change in health care on the country, and perhaps Gingrich has learned some lessons there as well. But the book demonstrates that he is not familiar with the problems with Establishment medical care. For example, he mentions lowering cholesterol, but fails to note that the usual methods for doing so cause far more damage than they prevent. There is a lot of corruption in the Medical Industry, and Gingrich seems to be blissfully unaware of this. He goes on to assume all Americans WANT health insurance, and therefore all Americans should HAVE it. What if you don't WANT it? That seems not to have occurred to him. I wouldn't want it because I don't want to avail myself of the toxic pharmaceutical drugs almost all doctors terrorize people into taking. I wouldn't want it because it won't pay for the care I have found to be most effective for me. Gingrich seems to have missed the fact that there is a growing number of people who are opting out of Establishment medical care. He thinks we can improve people's health within the Establishment, and we think otherwise.
Oh, and by the way. His proposal for an electronic medical database is a violation of medical ethics. The information can and will be used to control the population and eliminate undesirables. A person's medical record is a sacred secret, and the medical database he proposes makes the information available to people who have no business having it.
Because of the problems I have outlined, I do not fully support the views in the book. But there are plenty of good ideas worth reading. So I recommend buying the book. Just use discernment as you read it. Not every idea he has is valid. The fact he thinks about things means ultimately, he may develop more accurate thinking on some topics, but that takes time, and this is just a step in that direction.
