New York Times bestselling author, former Speaker of the House, and Fox News political analyst Newt Gingrich has a plan for slashing gas prices and reducing our long-term dependence on foreign oil.
Gingrich is famous for taking big, visionary ideas and boiling them down into practical solutions as demonstrated in this year's earlier release, Real Change, which was on the New York Times bestseller list for eleven weeks. His new book Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less does just that. Dealing not only with spiraling gas prices, but with the energy crisis as a whole, Gingrich shows how we can safely reap the benefits of America's own natural resources and technology in gas, oil, coal, wind, solar, biofuels and nuclear energy.

Gingrich argues that the pinch Americans are feeling at the pump is not a blip in the economy but a looming crisis--affecting not only the price of gas, but the price of food, the strength of our economy, and our national security.
To meet this crisis, Gingrich lays out a national strategy that will tap America's scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs, and require Congress to unlock our oil reserves and remove all the impediments and disincentives that unnecessary government regulation has put in the way of American energy independence. The energy crisis is solvable, as Newt Gingrich's plan makes clear. His handbook, Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less is sure to become the talk of the presidential campaign season.

From the Back Cover

Newt Gingrich Presents a Bold Plan for America's Energy Independence:

Do It All. Do It Now. Do It for America.

America is unrivaled in our ability to solve tough problems and create bold, powerful solutions. That's exactly what we need to do with the energy crisis we now face. We CAN become energy independent, while lowering prices at the pump today and developing innovative and effective energy alternatives for the future. We CAN produce an overwhelming supply of oil and natural gas here at home, and break the stranglehold that foreign (often hostile) countries have on our energy supply, and by extension, our economy. And we CAN be responsible stewards of our environment, protecting the grand beauty and richness of our country without sacrificing our robust engines of growth, expansion, and entrepreneurship. As Newt Gingrich, former Speaker of the House and bestselling author, spells out in stunning simplicity, when it comes to developing domestic energy resources, we CAN do it all. Isn't it time we relied on American energy for America's security and prosperity? With your help, your citizen action, and Newt Gingrich's plan as laid out in this handbook, we can solve this energy crisis--and slash gas prices, too.

This is not classic Newt where the subject would have been well researched and make for interesting reading. Instead it is clouded with political overtones of attacking the opposite side and prevents reaching an objective of solving environmental concerns and energy independence with a unified front. Shame on you, Newt for creating such a bomb. It's just tired rhetoric done hurriedly and soooo repetitive. Ho, Hum!

Newt's ignorance of oil geology is evident from the title. There is a reason oil companies are called E&Ps with the exploration part first. You don't take a $400,000/day drill ship out to sea and start poking random holes in the ocean floor. We have little knowledge of the structures off the east and west coasts or in the Beaufort and Chuckchi Seas. We have better data in the Gulf, but the good new stuff is under allochthonous salt at great depth, not economic at current prices. The Green River oil shale is a 35 year joke. For one thing it isn't oil.
The U.S. has about 3% of the world's oil reserves despite nonsense from Gingrich and his ilk.

First, I'm an independent. I do have 3 decades experiences as a federal worker working government programs with exposure to our elected officials. I'm familiar with the capabilities and limitations on both sides of the aisle. This includes energy. Mr. Gingrich...tho well meaning shows a lack of understanding of the complexity of the issue.

He does provide an adequate overview though slanted toward his political view. The strength of his case is the increasing daily power of special interests...does he acknowledge those he follows and in his party?

Two points illustrate his limitations. First, he never addresses that 35% of oil is used for crucial non-transportation aspects. These range from agriculture to plastics plus hundreds of more vital applications. He could include financial models showing the gravity of the consequences of losing this capability to better make his point of why we need to drill. Second, he should research EROEI...or energy return on energy energy invested...it frames how and why we can and should change based on scientific...managerial efficiency and effectiveness. It also will reveal the flaws on his too optimistic view of additional oil...buttressed by actual data (i.e. depletion rates, on line rates, etc.).

Yes...we are going to have an energy revolution...but it will be painful and take decades. His almost blind adherence to his sources without auditing and questioning them is a key example of why our government is broke IMO. His recommendations...though some noteworthy...are mainly 1 dimensional to a 3 dimensional problem.

The serious reader should explore other books on Amazon that more completely describe this issue to understand the importance, difficulty and gravity of this situation. I also suggest the Oil Drum...ASPO plus Solar...Wind...other alternative energy web sites. One caution...working closely with numerous leading edge technologies...they seldom come on line as quickly as the proponents say. This is why EROEI...management and decision systems are vital. IMO...concepts nearly foreign to Congress and White House as evidenced in hearings.

This is a thoughtful courageous unpopular geo-political stance. The title is overly provocative. The book is actually a policy recommendation for the USA to develop all sources of energy. He takes a stand against Nancy Pelosi's "saving the planet" populism, advocating development of oil and gas resources along with nuclear and renewables.

The book is full of facts and figures, although not presenting the complete picture. The main weakness of the book is that it it is one sided, presenting only the positive aspects of each energy source. Solar is not yet profitable and requires much energy use in construction of panels. Wind requires extensive land use and has detrimental environment effects. Nuclear has heavy capital costs that are not considered in G's cost estimate. The verdict on clean coal may not be as clear as he depicts although it merits consideration apart from ideological opposition. Biofuels, including especially ethanol, are proving inefficient and represent poor resource allocation.

Methane gas trapped in Arctic ice is a very interesting new energy possibility that should be pursued by the US. He points out that the USA is falling behind internationally as India builds refineries and China, Japan and France build nuclear facilities. The cap and trade program in Belgium, that he calls, tax and trade, has done nothing but raise energy prices. He advocates 100% expensing on energy research.

Recent oil and NG discoveries are proving Gingrich correct in his prognostications of energy reserves in the USA. He has a goal of moving towards less dependence on foreign oil while stopping short of the mindlessly unfeasible call for energy independence. It's a bit ironic that this conservative advocates action opposed to the malaise of progressives. The book was perhaps too early to enter the fracking and Keystone pipeline controversies although it does say that in situ heating carries small risk. There is no mention of either the Fukushima nuclear disaster or the BP Gulf oil spill. Since writing, profitability of solar panel manufacture in China has turned down.

There's perhaps a bit too much cheer leading on the basis of a "can do" attitude. G appears to have more confidence in American ability than I do. WWII production was an entirely different era and political economy. We are not the same country. True we have science and innovation but we have lost the ability to capitalize. When solar becomes profitable it will likely be Chinese. Jobs created by American innovation have a disturbing tendency to migrate overseas. Expecting the syndrome to stop is more wishful thinking than reality regardless of which party is in power. Nonetheless, these are mostly steps in the right direction.

Unless the public wakes up to misguided but popular current policies like the anti nuclear motivated edict of increased percentages of renewable energy in California, I doubt that the policies advocated in the book will prevail.
