About the author

I first became smitten with the Middle East at age 16 while reading National Geographic magazines and being enticed by the exotic landscapes, the culture, and the crazy shapes of the Arabic language that I decided I had to learn. I studied a lot about the Middle East, and Russia, when I was in university. I always expected to become an academic, but my draft board deemed otherwise; I was drafted and sent into intelligence work. I had an extraordinary chance to learn about the Middle East first hand while serving as a CIA operations officer all over--Turkey, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Afghanistan and Hong Kong for two decades. It was an education in itself, and a chance to travel and learn a lot of languages, which I loved.
I then "came in from the cold" and was appointed a top analyst at CIA for global forecasting. After 25 years with the US government I felt it was time to leave; I joined a major West Coast think tank (RAND)in California (no, nothing to do with Ayn Rand) where I was a senior political scientist. In 2004 I moved to Canada and, among other things, am now an adjunct professor of history at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver. I never lost my interest in Islam, the Middle East and Asia and ended up writing many books on the subject --on Islamic fundamentalism, Shi'ite Islam, and Arab, Turkish, Kurdish and Persian politics. By now they amount to nearly a dozen books; my more recent ones include the well-received "The Future of Political Islam," and later the provocative "A World Without Islam."
My last book was a personal memoir, "Three Truths and a Lie." It's a painfully personal book about our Korean son, adopted at age one who sadly died of crack cocaine at age 21. Although it's a sad tale, many people have commented that they find it uplifting as well, which is personally very gratifying. I'm about to publish a new book, "Turkey and the Arab Spring" in April 2014 And I'm at work on a novel--yes, you guessed it-- about the Middle East.
I currently live in a small town in the Vancouver BC area; when I can break away from my desk I like to spend time on community issues dealing with with bears, eagles, and salmon. And mountain biking is good for the soul.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2013Smooth transaction, on-time delivery, nice book. I recommend this book to everyone who would like to learn about Turkey quickly. Graham Fuller has a lot of knowledge about Turkey; and his analyses are in-depth, objective and sophisticated. This book includes developments in Turkey until 2007, and a lot happened since then, so I hope he will write an updated edition. If you had only three hours for learning and understanding about Turkey (up to 2007) and asked for resources, I would recommend this book without hesitation.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2017The New Turkish Republic (first published in 2008), written by the ex CIA agent Graham Fuller, describes the mission of the current islamo-fascist and pro-US neoliberal Erdogan/JDP government in Turkey.
You can find in this book almost everything the current Erdogan/JDP government stands for:
1) Demolishing Atatürk's secular republic; panislamism instead of Atatürk's secular and multi-cultural nationalism
2) A theocratic monarchy (like Saudi Arabia) under the cloak of "moderate islam" democracy (New Ottoman movement)
3) Wild capitalism and privatization (like Suharto regime of Indonesia): Minimizing and even nullifying worker rights, and ruthless plundering of nature (a religion of concrete, skyscrappers and asphalt), all in the name of economic growth and development
Erdogan/JDP party governs (actually plunders) Turkey since 2002. It could obtain the power in Turkey with vigorous support of US and CIA. A fact which is generally not known: The foreign policy and secret service of USA supported islamists in Turkey since 1948 (Marshall Plan) against all other political forces like secular democrats, left wing, social democrats, pro Atatürk people, socialists, communists etc. All under the cloak of "anti-communism defense"
Nowadays (2016-2017) Erdogan/JDP government seems to have collisions with the foreign policy of USA. I don't know exactly why; maybe due to its interventions in Syria, by supporting radical islamist groups, even after USA (and some European forces) stopped supporting them.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 11, 2013This book will give the reader a very good understanding of the significance of Turkey to the Arab world, the Eastern countries and the Western governments.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2008This is a great book about the recent political changes in modern Turkey. In the last 5 years, Turkey underwent crucial events including the emergence of a new modern-islamic party and disapperance of so-called the owners of Turkey. Military and other powerful elites of Turkey were not happy for these changes. Mr. Fuller nicely explains the old and new Turkey in the light of these new political changes. He gives emphasis on the new leader of Turkey, and his party, AKP. It is a wonderful book for those who are curious of these important historical changes in Turkey. I highly recommend it without reservation.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2008It seems Mr. Fuller's recommendations to the US government with regard to its Turkish policy have already been taken into serious consideration at Washington. In fact, his first and foremost action item (of supporting Turkish government and military in their fight with PKK) had already been adopted. U.S officials do seem to not only recognize, but at times, encourage independent Turkish foreign policies, and it will not be long before both parties, and the notoriously active Middle East region in general, will benefit from it. As Mr. Fuller intentionally overstates in his book by connecting solid fundamentals and indisputable logic, the current Turkish experiment, if successful as defined in the book, will result in prospering communications across all major religious and political ideologies for the first time in the last 20 centuries. Why would not any government listen with such stakes in place?
I would highly recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2010Comprehensive, yet concise. Away from political bias that exists in various forms in other similar works on the topic.
A successful and impartial piece to grasp the dynamics and gradual transformation process of contemporary Turkey.

As of 2006, he was affiliated with the Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada as an adjunct professor of history.
