About the Author

Before writing and illustrating Dinotopia, James Gurney painted reconstructions of ancient civilizations for National Geographic magazine. He has illustrated seventeen stamps for the U.S. Postal Service, including The World of Dinosaurs. His Dinotopia artwork has won the Hugo, Chesley, Spectrum, and World Fantasy Awards and has been exhibited at the Smithsonian Institution, the Norman Rockwell Museum, and the Delaware Art Museum. His most recent books, Imaginative Realism: How to Paint What Doesn't Exist (2009) and Color and Light: A Guide for the Realist Painter (2010), are based on his daily blog gurneyjourney.blogspot.com.

This is an old favorite. I love dinosaurs, and seeing them live with humans drove my imagination. I say that there was some violence, but it was exceedingly light. I doubt it would be an issue. Basically, one of the characters injures a dinosaur at the beginning, not knowing it is friendly. It isn't graphic, or over played, it is just part of the story.
Dinotopia is an amazing place, you journey through it with Will and his dad. Gurney's art truly makes it feel alive, like it is a place that you can visit by simply entering the books pages. The lore, locations, and technologies all feel realistic. Though, still with a sense of whimsy mixed in for good measure. You are not buying a book made of paper and ink, you are buying a ticket to another time and place. Explore it with your family, or enjoy the ride by yourself.
It is a ride that is well worth the price.

This is such a beautifully-illustrated book and a wonderful story! Makes an outstanding, unique gift for any dinosaur-loving child. I discovered it in a small bookstore when I was in college (a while ago...). Over the years, I have often given this book as a gift. I gave one to a young boy who hated to read and struggled with it (C), and to an extremely intelligent boy who loved to read (H)-- both loved dinosaurs and both loved the book! The boy who loved to read also knew more about dinosaurs at the age of 5 than I will ever know in my lifetime-- he's very scientific, knows all of the different time periods, sizes, characteristics, and technical names of, I think, every dinosaur ever! The level of details in this story met even his stringent standards of scientific accuracy! It says ages 8-12, but I gave it to the boys when they were much younger (5-6). James Gurney (author and illustrator) was an illustrator for National Geographic. His illustrations are so beautiful, children can look at those even if they can't yet read all of the words, then grow into the book.
This really makes a wonderful and unique gift- I keep giving it and it is a success with both the children and their parents. And the 20th Anniversary Edition is really special!

James Gurney - is there an award for just being super? JG should be awarded it right this minute! James can paint anything (I mean anything!) and how he fits this amount of work into his already busy life of podcasting, plein air painting, sharing brilliant tips, tricks and advice online as well as incisive comment on historic illustrators and painters beats me. He is a genuine hero of the art world - and comes across as a nice bloke too... The 25th anniversary edition is just gorgeous, his research and knowledge show through each and every illustration too. Awesome

This introduction to the amazing world of Dinotopia is the best story of the series (four that I've read). It takes the reader along with the Gulliver-esque Dennison duo, a shipwrecked father and son who chance onto the mysterious island of Dinotopia. There, the Victorian engineer discovers a society where intelligent dinosaurs live alongside humans. The best part of the series is the fabulous art--fabulous in its imagination, realism and detail. The story, ostensibly the traveller's journal of Arthur Dennison, examines the society as an outsider, but the book is enlivened by diagrams, sketches, and gorgeous illustrations. It has apparently been re-imagined as cartoons for children, but this is a book that would probably appeal to older readers due to the slow pace. Not really well written, but still the best of the lot.

This has been around a while, but I just discovered it for my grand son who, of course, loves dinosaurs. He is 3 years old and we had to pry the book out of his hands so he could eat dinner. We keep it at our house so he always looks forward to coming to see us...and the book.

I picked this up for nostalgic reasons, and its still the warm great fantasy world I used to retreat to in the corner of the library (this was an uncheckable book back then, and I would practically live in the library, being from a low income family). A great read for kids who will be great thinkers. Full of great pictures and awesome art, how this is not a successful movie franchise in the world of Star Wars/Jurassic Park/Harry Potter, it boggles the mind!

Dinotopia is a fun book. James Gurney’s outstanding artwork is what really caught my attention. It’s as entertaining, maybe more so, than the story. The afterword about how Gurney created the illustrations is very interesting too.

I’ve been rereading some of my favorite children’s stories that I read during my preteen and teen years. As a middle-aged guy I enjoyed revisiting Beatrix Potter The Complete Tales, Charlotte’s Web, Winnie the Pooh The Complete Tales, Treasure Island, Watership Down and The Wind in the Willows as much, maybe even more, than I did as a kid. All classics.

I’d shelve Dinotopia and the first Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, with this group of classic children’s stories too.

Normally I’m a sampler. I haven’t seen any of the movies from the following series, but I did read the first books, Twilight, Outlander, Fifty Shades of Grey, Divergent, etc. I sample a lot of first books, but I don’t read many complete series. The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins, and The Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones) series by George Martin are a couple of exceptions.

Other sci-fi and fantasy authors I like include Douglas Adams, Isaac Asimov, Paolo Bacigalupi, Jack Campbell, Arthur C. Clarke, Earnest Cline, Abe Evergreen, Robert A. Heinlein, Hugh Howey, Larry Niven, Patrick Rothfuss, Brandon Sanderson, John Scalzi, and Andy Weir.
