"Essential reading."-Steve Coll, NewYorker.com

A gripping, sobering account of how Mexican drug gangs have transformed into a criminal insurgency that threatens the nation's democracy and reaches across to the United States.

The world has watched, stunned, the bloodshed in Mexico. Forty thousand murdered since 2006; police chiefs shot within hours of taking office; mass graves comparable to those of civil wars; car bombs shattering storefronts; headless corpses heaped in town squares. And it is all because a few Americans are getting high. Or is it part of a worldwide shadow economy that threatens Mexico's democracy? The United States throws Black Hawk helicopters, DEA assistance, and lots of money at the problem. But in secret, Washington is at a loss. Who are these mysterious figures who threaten Mexico's democracy? What is El Narco?

El Narco is not a gang; it is a movement and an industry drawing in hundreds of thousands, from bullet-riddled barrios to marijuana-covered mountains. The conflict spawned by El Narco has given rise to paramilitary death squads battling from Guatemala to the Texas border (and sometimes beyond).

In this "propulsive ... high-octane" book (
Publishers Weekly), Ioan Grillo draws the first definitive portrait of Mexico's cartels and how they have radically transformed.

  • Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2013
As someone in California who had interest in Mexico's drug war but little knowledge, I found Ioan Grillo's El Narco: Inside Mexico's Criminal Insurgency to be the perfect book: fascinating, informative, terrifying, awe-inspiring.

With an ease that comes from knowing a topic inside and out, Grillo moves effortlessly from the micro to macro, zooming in on the perfect telling detail in a horrid murder scene and irising out to catch the larger historical context that helps you understand how such an inhuman scene happened.

Actually, it's more than just the knowledge of his topic: Grillo and his editor have done a tremendous job organizing the information covered and that in itself is a remarkable achievement. The Mexican drug war is almost too rich a topic--it's the material you might get if you distilled a thousand pulp novels into their most nightmarish essentials--and it's easy to imagine a lesser writer getting swamped and just parroting atrocities at you for dozens of pages. But this book slices up Mexico's Narco experience into different chapters so it can go deep, and then layers them on one by one. By the time you reach the end of the book, you can have a sense of the history, experiences, and motivations of nearly every type of person involved in the conflict.

It's not easy reading. There are things described in this book that are haunting in their barbarism, and there may be times where the larger historical context may be more detailed than desired by those looking for the quick shock of true crime books. But if you want to read a non-fiction book to learn about a topic, I've read very few that top this. I suspect it will join David Simon's Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets, Casino & Goodfellas by Nicholas Pileggi, and Tim Cahill's Buried Dreams as a touchstone for those writing about crime.

I'll be honest: considering Amazon's clumsy but well-intentioned attempts to prevent empty laudatory reviews by paid shills, I was hesitant to give this book five stars. And I'll admit that Grillo occasionally slips into the casually condemnatory tone you'd expect from tabloids and reality television. But, honestly, apart from that and a too-frequent use of the word "sanguine" because there aren't just enough good synonyms for "bloody" (and I'd argue that "sanguine" when used today is more frequently used to connote optimism or confidence), I don't have any complaints with this book at all. It is far more readable than you'd have a right to expect considering its breadth of knowledge, and it is far more educational than you would think considering how readable it is.

Finally, I should note that I purchased and read the Kindle edition, and it is the first book in recent memory that was flawless in its presentation. I'm on a quest to read 52 books in 52 weeks this year, and this was the first book out of the last five were there were no typos or missed OCR errors, no strange formatting gaffes, no mystery symbols dropped in to the e-book conversion that were left lying about. As someone who has been doing the majority of his reading on the Kindle, and who is beginning to suspect mainstream publishers are still giving ebooks "second best bed" status, I think Bloomsbury Press should be commended for taking such care in its presentation.

This book is affordably priced and is currently available to loan to others once you've purchased it. (I imagine it is probably stocked in libraries with an ebook program, as well.) Whether you purchase or borrow this book, I highly recommend you read it. I suspect I will be returning to it in many years to come.

El Narco shines a bright light on the on going violence by drug cartels in parts of Mexico. In addition to providing a concise background on how these cartels came into being, the author uses interviews with living and deceased cartel members and "counter insurgency" forces to provide insight on the goals of the major cartels and various tactics being used and/or considered to counteract their violence.

Additionally, Mr. Grillo examines the role of US involvement in Mexico since Mexico's Revolution at the beginning of the 20th Century and how that involvement influences the choices and their consequences for US policy makers today in assisting Mexico stem the violence today. Mr. Grillo also points out the paucity of facts available to policy makers to arrive at viable policy options. He points out that the amount of the actual drug trade are merely guestimations and that the public demand in the US for these drugs has not been addressed similarly to the lack of policy on selling weapons to Cartels based in Mexico.

The book has a rich bibliography that provides a basis for additional research. This is a good well written piece. I urge folks on both sides of the border to to read it.

I originally read this book years ago and have since also read "Sicario", which is an excellent book on the Narcos and their inner workings.

Since I first read it I decided to skim through it again and it still stands I think as one of the best books out there on the ongoing Mexican Drug War. Grillo digs deep, really deep, to unearth as much as they can about the Narco gangs. He collected a lot of information and got it from a wide variety of sources. From lowest ranks of the cartels; the mules and the street dealers up to the enforcers, to the people who battle them from Mexican journalists to American DEA agents. What is revealed is a very bloody machine that continues to make Mexico one of the deadliest places in the world.

First he starts with the earliest traces of drug smuggling in Mexico's history which is really fascinating. We see the introduction of opium to Mexico by Chinese smugglers and eventually the earliest smuggling of marijuana (which was the Cartel's biggest cash cow) during the Mexican Revolution of the 1900s. As well as the older "dons" from Sinaloa who controlled Mexico's narcotic black market in the 1980s and 90s during the big cocaine boom of the time. However, that beast was completely different from the one we see now. Somewhere along the line this old power structure died and violence just exploded in Mexico putting it on part with the violence in Afghanistan.

Thats about the time when Grillo first entered the scene. He goes into Mexico from Texas to learn as much as he can. He talks to street dealers in Mexico's border towns, interviews a an ex-police officer turned Cartel enforcer in prison, he talks to mules and hitmen in Colombia. Its really fascinating in a morbid way to see this Narco culture at a ground level. Some of the more eccentric details of the Narco lifestyle involve commissioning Corrido folk bands to make ballads for them, the lavish mausoleums they build for themselves (knowing it seems what their line work inevitably leads to).

Some of the most shocking revelations though are the levels of corruption we see in Mexico that make this bloody ecosystem of open street warfare possible. Cops routinely end up dead often because it turns out they are Cartel enforcers themselves. Corrupt politicians aid the gangs however they can while honest politicians are assassinated in broad daylight. Despite the monumental efforts of American agencies like the DEA their task seems almost pointless. Which lead to a question I had when I first got this; what does America have to do with it? Grillo seems to answer, a lot. To put it bluntly the economy that helps the Cartels stay afloat and profitable is this; Mexican marijuana and heroin go north, American dollars and guns go south.

Since this book was released Grillo seemed to be correct in that legalization would effect the bottomline of the Cartels. Since US states like Colorado have legalized recreational use of it, which is a growing trend in American politics, the Cartels have taken a massive hit in their profit margins. Still though the war rages. Despite the dramatic "Zero Dark Thirty"-esque capture of El Chapo Guzman the Sinaloa gangs continue to thrive. With the assassination of Javier Valdez and the kidnapping of student protesters; its apparent the Cartels are still very much alive.

If you'd like to get a better understanding of the Mexican Drug War, I recommend picking up El Narco.

Although I was vaguely aware of the issues facing central and Latin America I was completely ignorant of the malign influence (& the extent of it) that el narco has over these countries. It makes for terrifying reading that these gangs can effectively capture and hold states to ransom.

I enjoyed El Narco. It's well written and despite its content is a relatively easy read. I would have given it 5 stars but felt it was a little repetitive in places. Overall it's a good book and well worth a read for anyone interested in the failed policies and consequences of the "War on Drugs"

if "narco" were a work of fiction, one might dismiss it on the grounds that its content is simply too improbable, however engaging. the violence too violent. the dramatis personae too unbelievable. the twists and turns of the narrative too unimaginable. etc., etc. but sr. grillo's book is not a work of fiction; it is an extensively researched, brilliantly documented and imaginatively assembled odyssey through the nightmare world of the mexican drug wars. one might never have guessed that this war targetted, among others, beloved mexican musicians, or, at the same time, evolved its own religion ; but, as madison avenue might have said about this book, it's that "and so much more." i myself spend six months a year south of the border and thought, prior to reading "narco," that i had a layman's understandijng of the forces that drive the mexican drug wars, the sort of understanding one gains from reading newspaper and magazine articles and following the nightly news. how mistaken i was! if you want to gain a street-level understanding of the subject told from the perspective of a top-notch journalist, and ,at the same time, enjoy a really good read -- sr. grillo even manages to interject nuggets of black humor into his telling of the story -- then i recommend that you pick up a copy of "narco," which, having once picked up, you will find very difficult to put down.
