Purchase options and add-ons

Intelligence veteran Mark M. Lowenthal details how the intelligence community's history, structure, procedures, and functions affect policy decisions. With straightforward and friendly prose, the book demystifies a complex process. The fifth edition highlights crucial developments and new challenges in the intelligence community, including: changes in the management of U.S. intelligence and the fourth DNI in five years; Obama administration policies; developments in collection and analysis; the killing of Bin Laden, Wikileaks, and updates on Russia, North Korea, China, and the Middle East; the ability to handle the shift from large-scale attacks to smaller, individual attempts; and, expanded coverage of foreign intelligence services and new coverage of intelligence in authoritarian regimes.

I bought this as part of a course in grad school and it is a really good reference book. It is well written and not the normal dry text book one usually has to deal with.

Very good book. If you've ever wanted to know more about National Intelligence policy and processes, this is a good book to own. Purchased this for a class I was taken, and was very impressed with the content of this book. And it reads very easily.

I purchased the book for a graduate class, this fall. I was actually surprised at the content; based on prior readings of intelligence affairs they lacked the changes since the September eleventh attacks. The author takes a broad look at the theater and sets the pace for the remaining chapters. The book is well written and very informative on present relationships and laws within the intelligence community and their clients.

Well written and easy to understand for someone just trying to learn the basis of the intelligence community. Delves into the major issues with management, oversight, and authority without getting lost in the details. Good, intelligent read in any capacity.

very informative book. i needed it for a school class and i thought it was a good read to introduce you into American intelligence sector if you are wanting to learn more

This was a book I had to purchase for a class on American intelligence, however I am an avid reader so I will review it more than just as a textbook. I think there is great info here as this book did verse me in the intelligence process, but only with great repetition. This book doesn't claim to be an "intro" in its title, nor should it be assumed to be. There are so many organizations and in turn, abbreviations, in this book it takes a great effort to get acquainted with everything. I also feel about 1/4 of the material could be reduced as many times I felt like the author was exhausting a topic unnecessarily.

As a side note, the author claims he wrote with permission of the US Government as to not compromise them or be incorrect in his material - I can't remember what he said exactly, but along the lines of the government approved his book. Now I'm not conspiratorial, but I have to wonder how reliable this information is and how much of it is either a form of propaganda or white washed, where I'm reluctant to believe this is a balanced book. It does include "failures of oversights" such as 9-11, but is very tolerant and gentle with America's short comings.

This has some great info, and although not a bad book, I would hope their are better alternatives availible.

I feel very little must be said about this book aside from the fact that it provides exactly what anyone interested in the intelligence community would wish to know, and never for a moment loses said interest. Exemplary.
