Border Security
Purchase options and add-ons
Much has been written recently concerning the relationship between illegal immigration and border security (or the lack thereof). The concept of border security affects all of us, directly or indirectly. It seems that the closer we get physically to the border (any border), the more we are affected (by border security), and the more we consider it a real and valid concern.
Filled with relevant information, this holistic approach provides a timely foundation for anyone interested in the topic. Descriptive and analytical, the text is designed to offer undergraduates in Homeland Security and Criminal Justice a balanced and up-to-date overview of what border security is, as well as the constant revisions to it that have occurred over the past 109 years.
In this book, authors Phelps, Dailey and Koenigsberg describe and discuss:
- Various definitions of "borders," including geographical, political, and economic
- What "border security" actually is, in relation to different types of borders and how the concept developed historically
- The classical concepts of border security, including the Walled City, Hadrian's Wall, the Maginot and Seigfried Lines, and the Great Walls of China
- Border Patrol Operations, from 1904 to present day
- Present-day physical border security, including the various Border Fences, Operation Gatekeeper, and the effects of illegal immigration
- Maritime border security
- The relationship between border security and transnational crime
- Transportation security as impacted by borders
- "Solutions" to security along both the southern and northern borders of the United States
"I believe this is the most comprehensive work on border protection yet published by anyone to include the Federal government. It is the most comprehensive document for understanding the global history and contemporary context for every form of domestic and international border transgression from land, air, sea and cyber. Everyone seeking to understand the long term consequences of this problem must read it." ― Robert Scales, MG (U.S. Army, Ret.), retired Major General, formerly commanded the Army War College.
"This book is a definitive work on the concept of 'borders' and how governments over time view, employ and enforce them. The authors demonstrate extensive research and vast scholarship; the book is suitable for reference or general reading. It should be read by all members of Congress and border security public policy experts for a broader and deeper understanding of how borders function. The section that covers the different definitions of borders is excellent and thought-provoking." ― Diana Washington Valdez, border journalist, author and political science professor based in El Paso, Texas.
"…the definitive tome on the topic as it relates to US border security perceptions, practices, and issues. The work is both comprehensive in scope and holistic in its approach.…In summation, Border Security is a comprehensive and in-depth work on border ― and homeland ― security with excellent utility for both undergraduate and graduate level courses. It establishes a baseline for more focused discussions on a wide range of important topics intimately tied to the international problem of homeland security. Further, Border Security provides detailed coverage of both historical and contemporary issues in a clear and concise manner for the university student and should be considered essential reading for anyone wanting to participate in border security discussions." ― Dr. Robert J. Bunker, Distinguished Visiting Professor and Minerva Chair, Strategic Studies Institute, U.S. Army War College, in Homeland Security Affairs
"I was tasked with creating a course on smuggling, naturally I think about border security as well. My students will be happy to know this is the only book they need. Between it and my Homeland Security experience, everything is covered from the types of smuggling on the US/Mexico border to maritime issues as well." ― Tad Smith, Lamar University, instructor

- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2018This book presents a thought provoking overview of Border Security and Homeland Security concerns not usually considered when discussing these two national security objectives. It takes into consideration, all contributors to a true border security discussion, including border obstacles such as walls, protocol for addressing security breaches, airline and maritime security issues, first amendment speech concerns, and internet restrictions. American Civil Liberties Union concerns at border check points are also discussed, as a check on the constitutionality and efficiency concerns associated with illegal immigrant interdiction efforts inside of our borders. In presenting these topics, the book appears to take a non-ideological stance, focusing instead on what appears to be neutral facts.
Cross border narcotics concerns tied to Mexican Cartels is also overviewed in the text, to highlight the violence, human trafficking, and smuggling concerns presented at borders. It presents an accurate portrayal of border security concerns, without the “white noise” associated with differing presidential administration ideology being factored in. The overall importance of border integrity, regardless of the port of entry, is stressed.
The concept of border security is discussed broadly, to incorporate a more complete picture of border security concerns globally for the reader. An example of this, is how the authors discuss the Berlin Wall being built between West and East Germany, to keep East Germans from defecting after World War II. This illustrates how in that circumstance the wall was not erected for security reasons. The account of this in the book, gives an historical perspective to the reader.
The reader is given a description of what has constituted borders, boundaries, and barriers throughout history. An international history of border security issues is also provided for a better perspective.
The Border Patrol’s mission during the 1920’s alcohol prohibition period is also covered in detail by the authors. Although the book appears to be strongly in favor of the mission that Border Patrol Officers in general perform, the authors do not gloss over the human rights concerns presented by the agency during prohibition. These concerns prompted needed change.
The book also discusses how it was the U. S. need for agricultural labor, and not immigrant attempts to escape poor economic conditions, that precipitated the migrant migration into the U. S. from Mexico. It also covers how the 1929 depression spurned calls for sending these immigrants back to Mexico. This fact runs counter to what has always been the narrative associating illegal immigrants from Mexico with initiating these illegal entries into the U. S.
Included in this text, are several alleged cases of human rights abuse lodged against the Border Patrol throughout the years. The accounts of these abuses are detailed and appear to state facts without added opinions or perceived biases. The readers therefore, can make their own assessments regarding what occurred.
The international crimes of human trafficking and human smuggling are also covered in this work. The text serves as an all-inclusive guide on how these crimes have been furthered through cross border activities. Along with the topics of transportation security, internet crime, and transnational crime, the book exposes the reader to an all hazards overview of reasons why strong border security is needed.
As opposed to expanded security along Mexico’s border, the book encourages the examination of the U. S. practices promoting more open borders with Canada. Border issues discussed concerning this northern U. S. border, centers around border disputes rather than entry related concerns. The authors break down Canada’s border protection responsibilities as well, and their government agencies assigned to this task. By contrast, it would have been informative to know what the government of Mexico does in this regard along it’s border with the U. S. Maybe this can be included in the nest edition.
The need for a strong Customs and Border Protection Agency to restrict access to the U. S. by dangerous individuals, is stressed in this book by the authors. After a thorough reading of the text, I echo this sentiment. The past and present history on this issue supports coming to this conclusion. After your breakdown of the facts and circumstances illustrated to support this in Border Security, I am sure you will agree.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2018Border Security offers an in-depth, informative analysis of current and historical issues related to border security. The book is written in a textbook-manner, clearly for undergraduate and graduate students in the Homeland Security and Criminal Justice fields. However, it could be useful for anyone looking for information on the subject such as law enforcement officials.
The biggest strength in this book is its organizational structure. The book contains three parts including defining borders, border security and transnational crime, and U.S. border security today. Within the three parts are twelve chapters covering definitions of borders, the history, agencies who deal with border security, physical and maritime security, drug and human trafficking, internet crime, transportation security, the U.S. borders with Mexico and Canada, and the future of border security. While each chapter contains a little history on that section, chapter two completely covers border security in history. I felt that the historical aspect gave the reader a better understanding of border security today in part three.
Some of the chapters are extremely detailed with information that could have been left out and the reader would still have a complete understanding of the section. The book wasn’t too long but manages to cover a wide array of subjects related to border security from Hadrian’s Wall to the globalization of agriculture. The authors show how nearly everything is affected by border security. Although the book has three authors, I could not tell which author wrote each section and I feel that is important in educational books. The authors did not appear to have any bias for or against the topics they discussed; the information is simply factual.
Not only is it well-written, but Border Security provides graphs and pictures related to the text that makes it more interesting. The book is written in a way that you can start in any chapter and still be able to understand the information. The index provides a quicker reference when researching a specific topic in border security. Border Security is easy to read and essential for anyone looking for information relating to border security.
