Addressing what many consider the world's most controversial conflict, Naim Ateek offers a succinct primer on liberation theology in the context of the Palestinian struggle for freedom and self-determination. Beginning with the historical roots of this struggle, he shows how the memory of the Holocaust served to trump the claims and aspirations of the native inhabitants of Palestine, and how later Israeli occupation and settlements in the West Bank have contributed to their suffering and oppression. Supported by many Western Christians, Israeli claims to the land rely on a particular exclusivist reading of the Bible. In contrast, a Palestinian theology of liberation responds with a counter-strategy for biblical interpretation, emphasizing the prophetic themes of inclusivity and justice. Ateek concludes by providing principles for achieving security, peace, and justice for all peoples in Israel/Palestine.

This book tackles complicated topics and makes them understand to lay readers. Anyone can read and comprehend this book. A must read!

Rev. Naim Ateek explains Palestinian liberation theology. Jesus was a Palestinian living under the oppression of the Romans. By using the hermeneutic of Jesus Christ, we are able to discern which sayings of the Old Testament represent an exclusive vengeful God and those that represent the loving God. We understand that criticisms of the exclusive God were made by later theological writers of the Old Testament. We can practice a healing, justice-making, and peaceful, inclusive, non-violent path to resolving the Palestine-Israel conflict that is not based in hate of the Other. We can realize a Jerusalem that belongs to God and is open to all, as spoken about in the words of Ezekiel and other prophetic writers in the Old Testament. Our God is the loving God of all humans. We are all human beings; we are all welcomed as the children of God through God’s love, and we are all in need of justice, peace, and reconciliation. We can work together in respect regardless of a difference in religions.

In language that is accessible to non-specialists, Rev. Naim Ateek delves into the Scriptures, tracing the development of Biblical religion from its early tribal and territorial beginnings to its full flowering as faith in God's all-inclusive love embracing all people without discrimination for or against anyone. The book's principal focus, clearly demonstrated, is the interface between these Biblical insights, on the one hand, and the current situation in Palestine and Israel, on the other. This book offers a Christ-centered approach to relieving the intolerable misery and hatred that plague the Holy Land. An added bonus is the descriptive chapter on organizations that are striving to bring lasting peace with security and equal rights for all the residents of the land.

Helpful historical context to a complex issue which plagues us today. The book is certainly written from a Palestinian viewpoint but tries to maintain some balance.

Written by a remarkable Palestinian Christian clergyman who experienced the Nakba as a child. He advocates a peaceful non-violent solution to the Israel/Palestine situation, based on the New Testament and some, mostly late, portions of the Old Testament. While focused on Christianity, Rev Ateek also addresses the Muslim Community, and the world. Given the realities a message not just for the religious.
