Local Is Our Future: Steps to an Economics of Happiness Paperback – June 3, 2019
Purchase options and add-ons
From a renowned pioneer of the anti-globalization movement, a primer on working towards a localized world
From disappearing livelihoods to financial instability, from climate chaos to an epidemic of depression, we face crises on a number of seemingly unrelated fronts. This well-referenced book traces the common roots of these problems in a globalized economy that is incompatible with life on a finite planet. But Local is Our Future does more than just describe the problem: it describes the policy shifts and grassroots steps – many of them already underway around the world – that can move us towards the local and, thereby, towards a better world.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2019With strong echoes of Fritz Schumacher and Manfred Max-Neef, wrapped in her decades of experience communicating the message that we need for our happiness is to embrace the local on a global scale, Helena Norberg-Hodge "hit the ball out of the park" with this new book. She successfully explains the problems that destroy our happiness and well-being and offers real solutions, calling for both grassroots action and top-to-bottom economic and political transformation. The chapter "The Economics of Happiness" alone is worth the price of the book. While there are real challenges ahead of us as we implement her vision, the good news is that the young people of this generation have more than likely had enough of the status quo, and our collective efforts may finally yield a world full of "joy, peace, and sustainability."

- Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2022This book is for an ecofutures book group. I was concerned that it would be too long or heavy reading. It is an excellent, timely book, and very readable. Definitely worthwhile.
