Purchase options and add-ons
Bernie Sanders’s campaign for the presidency of the United States has galvanized people all over the country, putting economic, racial, and social justice into the spotlight, and raising hopes that Americans can take their country back from the billionaires and change the course of history.
In this book, Sanders tells the story of a passionate and principled political life. He describes how, after cutting his teeth in the Civil Rights movement, he helped build a grassroots political movement in Vermont, making it possible for him to become the first independent elected to the US House of Representatives in forty years. The story continues into the US Senate and through the dramatic launch of his presidential campaign.

Editorial Reviews
Review
—Cornel West, author of Race Matters
“Bernie’s been in the forefront of all the crucial environmental fights of recent years.”
—Bill McKibben, cofounder of 350.org
“Bernie is the real thing. He’s not about reading the polls and finding out what he needs to say in order to get elected. He’s about an unwavering commitment to basic justice, equality and sound financial sense.”
—Ben Cohen, cofounder of Ben & Jerry’s and founder of Stampede: Stamp Money out of Politics
“I feel weird using words like ‘values’ and ‘morals’ because those are words that have been co-opted to justify terrible things like bigotry and greed. I’d like to take those words back and use them to describe Bernie Sanders because his moral compass and sense of values inspire me.”
—Sarah Silverman, comedian and social commentator
Praise for the original edition, Outsider in the House:
“A clear, compelling and comprehensive vision for reinvigorating democracy, reducing poverty, rebuilding the middle class and restructuring our health care and education systems. Sanders gives us a vision of the day when ‘we will no longer be outsiders in the House.’”
—In These Times
“Outsider in the House is a rare achievement: a concise, compelling book that both tells an interesting story and provides a readable, down-to-earth blueprint for political change.”
—The Onion
“A road map for how progressives can win elections and not be a part of the two party duopoly.”
—Ralph Nader
“A grass-roots ‘how-to’ guide, especially helpful and inspirational for prospective independent candidates—a firsthand description of the career of the most successful American socialist politician in modern times.”
—The Hill

- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2016Here I was at first, sincerely writing off all the five-star reviews as mere lip service to Sanders' campaign, and convinced that I would encounter an agreeable but overall repetitive assortment of statistics and quotes courtesy of the good Senator. Even if that had been the case, it wold have been a splendid value at a hair over two-fifty, but that was not the case. The introduction was practically ripped right from the presidential campaign and serves as a mere refresher for the aging original text and an honest introduction for people who've simply never heard of Bernie Sanders beyond the "Socialist" label the media loves to throw around; after the introduction, however, ensues a well-written, engaging, convincing, and inspiring explanation of Sanders' origins and how he got to where he is today. I don't see how anybody could leave this book after actually reading from cover to cover without having it override their biased or outright ignorant preconceptions. At the very least you should finish with some degree of respect for the man and his dedication, and his fact-based smackdowns of the right that have been infused into this autobiography should earn him many a supporter through this book's readership. I absolutely do believe that these five stars are justified, though they may be a different five stars than I would give one of the classics of literature.
A must-read for a self-respecting citizen of humanity, and especially the common man.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2015This book was written, originally, after Bernie was elected to the U.S. Senate and looks back over his career as both mayor of Burlington, Vermont and as his terms as a member of the House or Representatives. It offers good insights as to how Bernie operates and what he believes in.
Bernie, although labeled as a socialist, is in my way of thinking a realistic politician who believes that the US should take care of itself and its own people before we spend trillions of dollars overseas. He also believes that the rich, who benefit heavily from the public good, should pay their fair share of taxes.
Most remarkable about Bernie is that he refuses to run dirty campaigns. He believes, strongly, that people what to hear about issues and not about whatever dirt a campaign investigator can find against his opponent. A novel idea….worry about issues!
If you are interested in Bernie and how he might govern as President, this is the perfect book to read. Bernie's beliefs haven't changed much since he first ran, and won't be likely to change now.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2016Every Berniebot really needs to read this book, have it with you all the time to share with people. He is so amazing, so dependable, so Bernie. All his life he's represented the same values of hard work, fighting for the common good, defending the innocent and those who have been cast out, has seen and hates/loathes the multi 1% trillionaires who just want more of everything, more homes, more boats, more cars, more money than they can spend in 20 lifetimes. Like a game, it's never enough for them, this competition between the rich, "Who is Richer" while 25% of our children in America are going hungry, while veterans are sleeping in the streets, while jobs are declining and being taken overseas. The 1% only care about acquisition, getting more and more, which is why we keeping being sold a bill of goods about how WAR and MORE WAR protects us from THE FEAR which they thread through our veins via "corporate TV and News" while we think we are being entertained. Bernie tells it all, and his story, why and what he has been fighting in Washington as more and more lobbyists and money buy up our government. BERNIE IS MAD and finally Americans are listening. I am so glad to write this review for the next PRESIDENT OF THE UNTIED STATES OF AMERICA, PRESIDENT BERNIE SANDERS.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2016I haven't read the original so I can't make a comparison, but this felt a little clunky in structure. I'm not sure I'd really recommend the book, it's not a particularly page-turning compelling read. Still, it gave me some very good insight into the mind of Bernie Sanders, and that's exactly what I wanted it to do, and thus it gets 4 stars.I don't really expect a politician to be an excellent book writer. The *parts* of the book are good, enjoyable, and give you a good idea of Bernie's values and how he operates. It's just the structure that could have used some work. It was at times a frustrating read because I wanted the book to be better. But I still recommend it for anyone interested in learning more about Bernie Sanders.

P.S.Reviewed in Canada on March 9, 20165.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, highly recommend this one and https
I've watched every debate and town hall in this election and I still learned a lot by reading this book. Bernie really should start talking about how he worked with Republican's for the first ever, full audit of the Federal Reserve. That was something I didn't know but very clearly shows that he CAN work with Republican's and that he's looking out for the people. Excellent book, highly recommend this one and https://www.amazon.ca/Essential-Bernie-Sanders-Vision-America/dp/1603586679?ie=UTF8&*Version*=1&*entries*=0 this one as well.

Oliver VölckersReviewed in Germany on March 14, 20165.0 out of 5 stars Revolutionär
Zitat Seite 206: "What would happen in this country if progressives were allowed to have four or five nights of prime-time television and front-page newspaper coverage? What would happen if we could present a point of view that most Americans are unfamiliar with? Would we suddenly become the dominant political force in America? No. Would millions of Americans develop a much more sympathetic attitude towards democratic socialism? Yes."
Von seinem politischen Anfängen über "Socialism in one city" bis zu "Where do we go from here?".
