Editorial Reviews
Review
—Paul Greengrass, director of Jason Bourne
“The mix of wide-ranging reportage and historical analysis is lively and insightful.”
—Claire Allfree, Metro
“The writing of this reportage is compact, urgent, present-tense, declarative, and addictive.”
—Andy Beckett, Guardian
“Mason has had a ringside seat to some of the biggest news events of 2011. He has listened to the protestors in Tahrir Square. He followed Greek workers marching through Athens. He has travelled through America, watched first hand the collapse of blue-collar employment and the death of the dream of home ownership.”
—Guardian
“He’s lively, funny and engaging, trading in the energy derived from the thrill and significance of what he’s witnessing.
”—Phil Harrison, Time Out
“A cogent, accessible analysis of the ongoing forces of global upheaval.”
—Kirkus Reviews
“This book not only reads as an in-depth consideration of global politics today, but offers a personal memoir from a man who has had a ringside seat. We are blessed that the BBC, for all the criticisms, still employs journalists whose logic and unfailing inquisitiveness brings us such analysis.”
—Dan Carrier, Camden New Journal
“You will learn something new and challenging on every page of this book.”
—Kenny Farquharson, Scotland on Sunday
“Mason has emerged as possibly the most engaged mainstream journalist of our age.”
—George Eaton, New Statesman
“Concise global analysis with sympathetic news from the frontline, revealing angry and scared people staring into a bleak future amid the wreckage of shattered certainties.”
—Ian Birrell, Observer
“Superb overview of the global protest movements of 2011.”
—New Internationalist
“Testament to his instincts as a veteran journalist, Mason managed to be everywhere right as things were kicking off—traversing the globe from the Middle East to Europe to America to Asia. [T]he book combines a feel for the breathlessness of events as they unfold with a historian’s eye for patterns and precedents ... Mason’s prose beautifully captures the almost surreal mood that often accompanies mass shifts in consciousness.”
—Leela Yellesetty, Socialist Worker
“An accessible insight into how the world is swiftly changing and what the implications are for women, politicians and business.”
—Daily Mail
“These reports are good journalism. One feels as if they are present at the rallies, occupations and riots that Mason describes. The anecdotal tales he provides should remind anyone who participated in any kind of popular resistance in the past decades of the energy and hope one finds and feels at such events. These are the stuff that makes one join such movements. Worthwhile and provocative.”
—Ron Jacobs, Counterpunch
“Paul Mason’s enthusiasm and curiosity are infectious. Adapting a rich vein of leftwing revolutionary thought for the wired generation, Mason argues passionately that the old rules have been broken.”
—John Kampfner, The Observer

- Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2014A Journalistic firsthand account of the political uprisings, struggles and protests of the last 5 years or so around the globe.
For everyone who wants to know what the hell's going on, been going on, and what's maybe to come.
A bit of history, economics and science thrown into the political Molotov too.
And really nicely written in an easy going, sometimes humorous, but always well-informed travelogue style that keeps you interested throughout.
Should be read by all the fogies who exclaim they have no idea what's going on these days or anyone who wonders what all those videos and tweets of rioters getting beaten by cops on Facebook is all about.
And let's make it compulsory reading in schools, before or maybe so the kids burn it down.

GloriaReviewed in Italy on January 2, 20145.0 out of 5 stars really really great book
I'm researching the latest revolutions and I have to say Mason wrote my favorite book of the bibliography. He can definitely write, you are never bored and he managed to incorporate all the peculiar characteristics of OWS, Tahir, London riots etc. and intertwine it with history of the past revolutions, important sociological concepts of the networked individual etc...truly great!
S. MooreReviewed in the United Kingdom on August 5, 20135.0 out of 5 stars An excellent insight into an historical turning point
I like Paul Mason's books, they speak to the part of me that wants to smash capital corporatism.
This book taught me much about the many uprisings around the world in recent years including the London riots of 2011.
From an historic point of view, I think we are at a turning point, in that the power structures of the super rich and the state are to some extend being challenged by the proletariat, except this time its not being called a class war, the business worlds ownership of global media will see to that, although in essence the debate 'is' about how we distribute wealth and organise our society.
The trouble with the masses is that we are an un-unified and disparate group all working against each other assisted by the mass media purposely dividing us by pampering to our prejudices about each other, whereas the super rich are united in the fight against us and they have the money, determination and patience to see the war through, plus they have army's and police forces to assist them in the process of retaining power.
Perhaps in time as the older generations are replaced with the younger ones who haven't had it so good things will change.
We are at a tipping point with so many things, global warming, carbon emissions, deforestation, energy wars oil/fracking/renewables,the endless wars instigated by America in the pursuit of dwindling oil supply's, the emerging economy's, population growth and world poverty and of course the financial crisis,
And this book goes some way to addressing some of these issues asking the two biggest questions, which are, will the networked revolution work and if so what will global corporate capitalism be replaced with?
If your interested in what's happening in the world today, this is a good read
KushReviewed in the United Kingdom on April 13, 20164.0 out of 5 stars A very good read indeed
This was a very interesting and insightful book, which gave a first-hand account of some of the unrest in protests that taken place around the world. What was particularly interesting was, to see the role that social media has played in creating a space, where people can discuss ideas, which they would have been unable to do otherwise. A very good read indeed.

Doriana MascoloReviewed in Italy on June 17, 20154.0 out of 5 stars Why it's still kicking off everywhere
Interessante, vivace, originale. Porta il lettore a diretto contatto coi movimenti sociali di opposizione alla realtà economica e istituzionale corrotta e reazionaria in modo avvincente e contro ogni tendenza alla demoralizzazione. Si legge tutto d'un fiato!
JaketheDaxReviewed in the United Kingdom on January 18, 20165.0 out of 5 stars Excellent journalism
As I read each chapter, it took me on a unified journey of resolution, hopelessness and courage around the world. It chronicles the experience of protest, the will for change and the difficulties of attainment.
Paul Mason is a fine writer with the knack of unpeeling the essence from interactions with those involved and from the evidence around him. Lots of questions, many answers. A great read
