I got this book in order to use a reference for character development and I get everything I needed. It starts with the beginning of the Reivers and how they evolved out of the lawless regions along the England Scotland border. It goes into their loyalties, local reaction to them, their tactics, and famous names. Accompanied by maps and pictures it was just fantastic and was an enjoyable read as well.

For history fans like myself too often the Osprey books focus on what we think of as being the 'additional information' on a given subject. The authors shine the bright light of their experience and knowledge on the side issues like the difference between winter and summer coats or officer's boots vs the boots of the ordinary troops. Not this time folks, not by a long shot.
Keith Durham uses the words of people alive at the time to bring a personal look into the style of fighting and the culture of the border. Scots raiders slipped into England to kill and rob. Men from England did the same, crossing into Scotland to steal cattle, to murder and to take men hostage against future ransom. And on neither side did the reivers stop short of pillaging their own countrymen.
Durham does not stop short of describing the arms and accouterments of the bands of robbers. We know of the 'daggs', the wheel lock pistols used by all sides, the swords with their basket hilts, the front and back armor and so on. But the frequent quotations of people on the ground make the book for me. "Dyverse Scottes to the number of two thousand or threabouts....runne a forrowe within England and have taken and driven away out of Tyndall about a thousand sheep and goates, besides insight, clothes, gear and weapons." There are many like sayings from 'dyverse' commentators, all of personal insight from people who knew well the situation on the ground.
Illustrator Angus McBride is perhaps the most famous and best regarded of the large and excellent stable of illustrators employed by Osprey. His drawings are of course top notch. I want to mention that the drawings are made from evidence of some short coming from the time in question. In other words he did not just make stuff up.
In short, the drawings are excellent and informative but the text by Mr. Durham is packed tightly with facts and he also writes well enough that we have a sense of the times, the danger and the ruthless warfare that engulfed the border region for three hundred years. This is a superlative effort.

Fantastic book as usual from Osprey about a very interesting period. Unfortunately if, like myself, the amazing illustrations of Angus Mc Bride were of equal interest prepare to be disappointed. They are regrettably terribly reproduced, almost washed out! Perhaps there are publishing right issues over access to the origional paintings? What a shame.

This, as the other reviewers have said, is a great book, but in my copy the late Angus McBride's wonderful illustrations have been very badly reproduced, hence the three stars. The colours are off, and they are all 'bleached out'. Given the importance of the illustrations in an Osprey 'Men at Arms' title, this is a pretty serious flaw. Maybe one to get from a bookshop (my copy is a 2008 printing).
