The best source of aviation accident information - ever

MacArthur Job's books continue as the standard by which all books on industrial accidents ought to be measured. A non-nonsense but readible prose style, an unnerving focus on the significant elements of the accidents, and the superb drawings of Matthew Tesch provide all the information in an understandable, accurate, and chilling narrative of disastrous events.
It's all too easy to imagine being in the cockpit in the last few minutes of a plane's -- and often pilots' existence.
This series is unlike any other in the field or any similar field. I've been to some of the accidents described by Mr. Job and can attest to his precise accounting of the facts.
If only Government agencies could write descriptions like this.

For anyone interested in airline accidents, this series is a must. Volumes 1 & 2 were outstanding, and V-3 is even better. Each event is spelled out in intricate detail, and you finish each chapter with a wealth of knowledge about the accident, the aircraft, the investigation, and the aftermath. Each accident is so detailed, it almost borders on too much without overdoing it. You come away knowing much more than you ever thought you would, and therefore have that much more insight. Highly Recommended! When does Volume 4 come out?

This is an excellent, knowledgeable and well-researched book. If you are particularly interested in the very technical details and the how and why of airplane disasters this is an excellent source.

My failure to give the book 5 stars has to do with two shortcomings for my purposes. First, this book is too technical for my tastes. I prefer disaster books like Darkest Hours, The Winecoff Fire and others that focus on the human aspect of catastrophes. Second, the pictures in this book are a disappointment. They are all black and white, many are poor reproductions, and they don't always provide useful illustrations to the body of the text.

This book will be an excellent purchase for some readers who want to know the technical details of airline crashes and the investigations that follow them. "Humanistic Disaster Buffs" like me probably won't get so much from it.

Macarthur Job was an accident investigator with the Australian Department of Civil Aviation and knows whereof he speaks. With the aid of excellent diagrams, maps, photographs and selected relevant voice-recorder transcript extracts, along with concise but fully-detailed descriptions, Volume 3 gives a clear understanding of the known facts about how and why each accident occurred, as well as technical explanations with associated diagrams.
Volume 3 covers 13 accidents to tubojet airliners, about half of them being to Airbus types, which merely reflects the order of presentation over the three volumes - chronological.The articles are authoritative, being drawn in every case from the official reports.It is clear on reading them, however, that Job has been to some trouble to establish relevant wider factors - e.g., political, historical and geographic, to help "set the scene"; he also offers his own thoughtful comments on the wider causes of accident trends, and how the lessons learned have affected developments in aircraft design.
Here in 3 volumes, (Vol. 4 covers the propeller era immediately prior to the age of pure jets) you can access the details of many of the major accidents to jet aircraft up to 1988. To me they are a very handy and reliable reference - much easier than obtaining the official reports!
I recommend this book to anyone interested in air safety, including professionals.

Like the other volumes in this series , this book provides a fascinating and riveting account of various air accidents in the jet era ; well written but accessible to non aviation readers with excellent diagrams
These accidents led to improved safety in civil aviation , unfortunately learned the hard way.
These soft covers can be difficult to find , especially the propliner vol 4 , but I would recommend trying to get the complete set

Volumes 1 & 2 were interesting, well produced volumes about what goes up... and comes down where it shouldn't. Volume 3 seems to have run out of decent crashes and expands on the few which have happened in the past ten years, often going into details about paint schemes and liveries which are nothing to do with the disasters but no doubt interesting to anoracks.
