I really enjoy this small book. Need a recipe for Johnny (Hoe) Cakes, biscuits or simple recipes to cook over a fire? This booklet has them. I like the down home, easy to read stories about pioneers and their spread across the US. I have many cook books and quite a few cook books concerning pioneers - this one delivers what it promises - a few stories and quite a few simple recipes. I very much recommend this small book.

Great history, not ideal for recipes

The book is great for history of the pioneering of cooking in the late 1800's to 1900's in the mountains/country. The stories are great, however the recipes are not practical and there are not many recipes in the book. I would rather check it out at a library than purchase this book. It is a good read, but not one that I would keep on my shelf with my go-to books or with my collectables. I bought one for my sister who said it was a good read, but not really for the recipes. However, this is just my opinion and not everyone may feel the same about this book.

Very disappointed in content, boring, probably won't try any of the recipes and there was minimal historical background, seemed to be just a collection of quotations. Will keep looking for a cookbook/historic book for the period - this isn't it. Perhaps I'm too English to "get it"!!!
