Incredible quality and details!

This book is a strange concept that sounds like it might not work - Scott Sullivan did a ton of research on the Apollo command and service modules, from blueprints and other sources, and then plugged it all into a computer program and made CAD drawings and incredible cutaways from every system. The results are truly phenomenal; every page of this full-color book is glossy and of the quality usually reserved for high-end art books costing ten times as much.

As far as detail, I felt I had enough info to start building one of these things in my back yard if the local hardware store sold all of the titanium I'd need! I don't think the original space program had blueprints as detailed and colorful as those within the pages of this book. I am a big techno-geek, always wondering how things work and are put together, and I have spent hours and hours gawking at these drawings, looking at how heat shields are made or how astronauts stored their gear. There's also a lot of text per page telling you what you're looking at and how things were assembled.

This is not only a well-executed book, but a great idea for other similar books for other parts of the space program. If Mr. Sullivan announced a large-format set of plans for the Space Shuttle or Skylab, I would be the first in line, no matter what they cost!

Beautifully made, interesting book

A lot of care and work clearly went into this beautiful book comprising detailed, color engineering diagrams of the Apollo command and service modules. It's fascinating to see how complex the command module is - just looking at it, it looks like a metal shell, really - but there is a much, much more too it!

Although this book is certainly indispensable for people interested in the space program, I was disappointed that a couple of features in which I was interested were missing. Sadly, there was no detailed discussion of the function of each switch and gauge accessible to the astronauts, including its use and wiring. There was no mention of (or diagram for) the "barber-pole" (or gray flag) functionality mentioned in Apollo 13. The famous "SCE" switch, which Pete Conrad couldn't find until co-astronaut Alan Bean located it, saving the Apollo 12 mission, is not pictured. There are four page of panel diagrams, true, on pages 68-71, but some of the switches' functions cannot be read. And just how to use the switches - how to fly the aircraft - isn't described. Also, the wiring of the famous bad thermostatic switch that caused the Apollo 13 fire in the O2 tank is not shown.

In conclusion, despite the minor issues I noted, this is a wonderful book for anyone interested in NASA.

I was entranced with Mercury, Gemini and Apollo as a kid but find myself even more compellingly interested in it as I get older. People familiar with cars and houses can readily gauge the space of a house or the size of a car by looking at pictures. But aircraft, for instance, are difficult to imagine in photographs except for pilots. I was surprised when I finally saw a real B17 that it was not quite as huge and massive as I had imagined.
Spacecraft are very difficult for people to understand because they rarely see a real one. It's impossible for someone to grasp the Saturn V unless they visit one of the few remaining artifcacts on display. The conical and cylindrical design of the Apollo capsule made it hard for people to fathom exactly how it was layed out inside. In addition spacecraft are the most densely packed devices made with an incredible amount of apparatus stuffed inside them.
This ingenious book finally slices open the Apollo Command & Service modules in a colorful and revealing way so that even the average person can quickly grasp it's design and the way it looked.
In addition the book shows in detail exactly how it worked and how it all fitted together.
This book is a must have article for any Apollo buff.

Good, but needs a rewrite now.

As my title implies this book could now benefit from the experience the author has gained on his later work, the Virtual LM. Small technical errors in perspective and some lacking of detail are evident to the real "space head". The author seems to have still been learning the Autocad program, as he later mastered how to make his diagrams more vivid and appealing to the eye.

It is still a fantastic expose of the Command and Service modules that takes you literally behind the scenes. Not just pretty exertior pictures but rip off the skin and lets see the guts type pictures.

Redo the book and it definitely gets bumped up to a five star!

Ein muss für jeden Fan von Apollo und den Mondlandungen. Äußerst detailgetreu mit dem CAD System Pro Engineer nachkonstruiert. Eine unglaubliche technische Recherche und höchstwahrscheinlich eine Unmenge an Konstruktionsstunden wurden in diesem Buch untergebracht.
Wer will bekommt sogar die CAD-Dateien von Scott (gegen Bezahlung natürlich).
Leider sind die Bücher in Deutschland sehr teuer, was ich nicht nachvollziehen kann, denn der Originalpreis in den USA beträgt 24,95$. Trotzdem loht es sich einen Blick hineinzuwerfen und die Texte zu lesen. Es wurde wirklich jeder Schalter, jede Niete und Leitung abgebildet. Tolle Arbeit.

Superb. This thin book is a feast of detail on the CSM. I've always had difficulty imagining how the astronauts fit this strange conical spaceship and this book has fixed it. It'll make watching film of them in the CM much less confusing. I've never seen diagrams from NASA, and I've searched, that do what this book has done. Full colour throughout and a good selection of aspects to detail. I can't fault it. The best addition would be getting into a real one.

私はアポロ指令船のモデルを作成するにあたり図面などは入手していますが、あくまで２Ｄでのとらまえ方しか出来ず詳細な部分を理解するには資料不足でありました。しかし本書を手にして３ＤＣＧでの素晴らしい図解を見ることが出来て今まで理解出来なかった構造等が一目で理解できました。写真資料は少ないのですが、３ＤＣＧだけで全然不足は有りません。全篇カラーで英語力の無い私でも見ているだけで楽しめます。今までこんなに判りやすくアポロ指令船を図解してある物は見たことが有りません。アポロファンには必携の一冊でしょう。

間違いが随所に見られるのが残念。
ブロック2の機械船の表面パネルの相違、
随所に見受けられる上下左右のスケール的歪み。
本書を真の解説図版と捉えるとするつもりなら用心してかかるべし。
その点をふまえれば最高の参考書であると言えよう。
