Slouching Towards Sirte: NATO's War on Libya and Africa Paperback – November 28, 2012

Mavis Gallant Nonfiction Prize Awarded by the Quebec Writers' Federation
A comprehensive analysis, this book examines all the justifications and myths about the war on Libya and methodically dismantles them. It delineates the documentary history of events, processes, and decisions that led up to the war while underscoring its resulting consequences. Arguing that NATO’s war is part of a larger process of militarizing U.S. relations with Africa—which sees the development of the Pentagon’s AFRICOM as being in competition with Pan-African initiative—this account shows that Western relations with a “rehabilitated” Libya were shaky at best, mired in distrust, and exhibiting a preference for regime change.

Review
"Forte's allegations that NATO's war was manufactured by liberal interventionists and 'iPad imperialists' whose agenda to disrupt African independence and execute regime change under the 'fig leaf' of saving lives are chilling—and persuasive. . . . Even though Forte couches descriptions of Gaddafi in amorphous, guarded language, he isn't an apologist. In this provocative and unabashedly direct book, Forte speaks truth to power." —www.ForewordReviews.com
“a meticulously documented study in hypocrisy: that of the U.S. elite, of the Gulf ruling classes who have lately welded their agenda directly onto that of the United States, and of the liberal bombardiers who emerged in the crucible of ‘humanitarian’ wars of the 1990s only to re-emerge as cheerleaders of the destruction of another Arab country in 2011.(…) Forte is able to bring to bear evidence that NATO carried out extensive war crimes during the ‘liberation’ of Sirte, and the evidence is impeccable…” —Max Ajl

- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2013When I bought this book, I wondered whether it was going to add anything significantly new to what Professor Francis Boyle and former Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney had already meticulously researched and written to expose the illegal Western machinations to overthrow the Libyan government and killing thousands of innocent Libyans, mostly Black Libyans, and innocent African migrants in the process. Without a doubt, Slouching Towards Sirte did not disappoint me. With an emphasis on NATO's objective to radically and overwhelmingly militarize United States-African relations, Maximilian Forte completes the canvass of the most sinister political machination ever hatched by the West to dominate, exploit and marginalize Africans.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2014Maximilian Forte is a highly respected professor at Montreal's Concordia University. His unique "eye" and intellect as a political anthropologist shed new light on all previous analyses I have read of the NATO attacks on North Africa. It is a startling reminder of how much is often left unknown to us through usual channels -- even some of critical dimension in their scope. Now that we can see first hand the effects of the long-term devastation wrought by NATO it becomes even more important to understand how the role we played in this continuing tragedy unfolded.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2016Honestly I don't think it is a bad book but it could be much shorter. Large sections of the book can be summarized into a paragraph or two but continue for multiple pages
I admit I bought this book for a class so I didn't get much of a choice (and based on the recommended to buy together list it seems the majority of people who do are taking the same class) yes it was a tolerable read but really I think a 20 page summary would be more than sufficient for anyone interested in the subject
- Reviewed in the United States on July 3, 2016This book is truly OUTSTANDING. It DETAILS the POLICES of OUR (US) Government in its DEALINGS w/SOVERIGN Countries/Nations (that we have LABELED Non US Friendly, Terroristic, etc.) that it wishes 2 DEMOCRATIZE in order 2 operate & control the Economic & Mineral Rights of these Countries/Nations; thereby ENHANCING the WEALTH of US Corporations & ONE PERCENTERS.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2013Every American should be required to read this to understand how unjust and immoral this country's government, military, and big business is. That includes mainstream media otherwise these lies could not be hidden from public.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2013This book does an excellent job of presenting the facts without undue bias. I would recommend this book to anyone concerned with understanding America's detrimental foreign policies in North Africa and the Middle East.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2013Slouching Towards Sirte was an interesting read in that it provided the African content's over view of the war in Libya. While that is a valuable POV it is not the global birds eye view that this event should be couched in. A broader perspective would be to draw in all the interested and effected parties and not exclude particular players. I found it at once too broad and not nearly broad enough.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2014Ample evidence of this existed at the time the war began and much more emerged even in the immediate aftermath when the book was being written in early to mid 2012. The author would brook no inquiries as to why this was. Very well written and thorough on the many evil elements and actors that drove the war, except this ESSENTIAL ingredient. Tragic.

Wayne DawsonReviewed in the United Kingdom on August 25, 20155.0 out of 5 stars An essential narrative for the truth!
Maximilian Forte has written a deep and penetrating analysis on ‘Nato’s War on Libya and Africa’, laying bare the lies and deceit that has left a once stable and prosperous country in economic ruin and ethnic dislocation. Gaddafi’s push for a more integral Africa through the A U (African Unity) encouraged African migrant workers into Libya where Arab resentment became manipulated into a racist war backed to the hilt by Nato bombing on behalf of western interests. This ambitious programme of inspired initiatives by Gaddafi won him the admiration of much of the African political and tribal leaders, but drew mockery and resentment from the west, namely America. An independent African financial system backed by gold and national sovereignty over natural resources is anathema to America’s claim upon the planet. As we see repeatedly throughout the world, many other elements work hard in the service of this deceptive web of corruption, whether it be mass and social media, the United Nations, Amnesty International or the International Criminal Court. Africom (U S African Command) is desperately trying to undermine Chinese trade and influence throughout the continent and apparently no human price is too high to pay when it comes to American national interests. This deep rooted, anti-humanitarian cynicism is part of a global wave of crimes against humanity that has infected American monologue with Orwellian double speak. Slouching Towards Sirte is an exceptional study and expose to yet another layer of Nato driven crimes.
Greg HunterReviewed in Canada on May 9, 20135.0 out of 5 stars Empire's mask of rightness - heart of darkness.
Oh dear - we only wanted to help the people of Libya and it all went to hell. Who could have guessed we would get it wrong - ok besides Iraqis, Afghans, Vietnamese. Ok and maybe the Congolese and Haitians - well Ok maybe the people in the Balkans who are affected by depleted uranium and mafias. But hey we meant well and I am sure next time we (and our AlQuaeda allies) will get it right in Syria. Of course I jest - this book documents how NATO did get it right in Libya - that is they accomplished their geopolitical goals. Qaddafi's PanAfricanism is no longer a barrier to NATOs Scramble for Africa. A brilliant book - details the ruse to protect Benghazi - the bait - and the switch which was the destruction of other towns and cities on the road to Sirte. A brilliant title - a slouching of our critical thinking opened the road to Sirte and the destruction of a country with the highest standard of living in Africa. A must read!!!
Diana JohnstoneReviewed in France on December 4, 20135.0 out of 5 stars A Shameful Tragedy
A truthful account of the terrible tragedy unleashed by NATO's war against the Gaddafi government, which had the fault of being suited to Libya and Africa, but not to the Western powers nor to the Arab elites in the Gulf. Forte exposes the lies used to justify this shameful war and, above all, the anti-black racism that was perhaps its deepest hidden motive. This was a war of pure destruction that has left Libya in a shambles and deprived Africa of a force for progress. Never perhaps have such crimes been committed so rapidly in such ignorance.
The only good to come of this evil is the awakening in other parts of the world to the danger and hypocrisy of the Western "R2P" doctrine, which is nothing but the latest pretext to claim saintly motives while behaving like Attila the Hun.

Read this book if you want to have an insight about Nato's role in destroying Libya with Qatari funding
What was once a stable affluent country has been turned into a warren of intercine fighting and a haven for Daesh ( former Nato rats/ Al Qaeda turned Isis )
Sarkozy, Cameron, Obama and last but not least Killary Clinton are all war criminals who got away with instigating regime change under the disguise of human rights & protecting civilians; only to do the exact opposite: to bomb civilians, murder a head of state, bomb civilian infastructure, aiding & abetting terrorist (rebels ), destabilise the country and then crow about how it was for humanitarian liberal reasons.
I suppose they came they saw they achieved they bombed they obliterated.

A tad pedantic, but on the other hand scholarly explication of the evidence definitively demonstrating yet another major US/NATO crime against humanity; this in the laying waste to yet another nation that attempted to chart its own independent course free of the deadly embrace of Mordor.
