What Love Is This?: Calvinism's Misrepresentation of God Paperback – April 1, 2002

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 167 ratings

Multitudes of sincere, Bible-believing Christians seem to have accepted Calvinism by default, thinking that their only choice is between a doctrine of eternal security and a doctrine of falling away. How aware are they of what John Calvin and his early followers of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries actually believed and practiced? Bestselling author and scholar Dave Hunt warns readers about the distorted beliefs of Calvinism, giving them a clearer view of the God whose sovereignty does not diminish His mercy and love.

Born in 1926, Dave enjoyed the advantages of a godly upbringing, and placed his trust in Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and Lord in his early teens.

He received a degree in mathematics from U.C.L.A. Marriage to his wife, Ruth, was followed by the birth of four children, a career as CPA/management consultant and, later, the management of several corporations. Along with church-related activities, Dave initiated and became involved in numerous campus ministries and meetings in his home, with a special outreach to Jewish young people and foreign students.

Since 1973 Dave’s desire for fulltime ministry has found fulfillment through authorship of books dealing with the incursion, into Western culture and the church itself, of Eastern, psychological and selfist philosophies, ecumenism, and other unbiblical teachings. Concern over Islamic politics and religion are reflected in current articles, lectures and interviews.

At least 4 million copies of his books have been sold and have been translated into more than 50 languages. They include: The Cult Explosion, The God Makers, The New Spirituality, The Seduction of Christianity, Global Peace and the Rise of Antichrist, Occult Invasion, A Cup of Trembling, In Defense of the Faith, An Urgent Call to a Serious Faith , What Love Is This?, Countdown to the Second Coming, Seeking and Finding God, Honest Doubts, Judgment Day! Islam, Israel, and the Nations, Yoga and the Body of Christ, and his latest book, Cosmos, Creator and Human Destiny.

His video, Israel, Islam & Armageddon has become a tremendous tool for churches and others interested in helping spread the truth about events prior to and since the attack on the World Trade Center.

Dave’s impeccable research and recognized scholarship are based on in depth studies of original documents and publications, interviews with key experts from around the world, and extensive travel—including to South America, Australia, Europe and throughout the Middle East.

Friday, April 5, 2013, Dave Hunt drew his final breath and entered into the presence of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. His beloved wife Ruth was at his side.

If you are confused about Calvinism or are a Calvinist, I heartily recommend you break away from Sproul/Piper/McArthur/White/Calvin (or whoever) long enough to give this book a try. As with any of Mr. Hunt's books, this one is Biblically grounded and well researched. It's also quite the page-turner, and I found it hard to put down (I even bought the MP3 version, so I could listen through the book again at work). Calvinism had stormed our church body, and the repugnant views of a god who isn't all-loving (according to Calvinism, Jesus didn't die for everyone like the Bible states), or that god is apparently a fiend (the Calvinistic god punishes some for sins he forced them to commit, and berates some for failing to repent though he has witheld their ability to repent), or that one cannot have assurance of eternal life/salvation (according to Calvinism) bothered me considerably (not to mention other problems and also contradictions one is supposed to swallow in order to believe Calvinism). The Lord drove me back to His Word and I looked to see whether the things my pastor & his staff (and the books they were gorging themselves on, instead of The Bible) were Biblically correct, and found them wanting, but unable to clearly define my objections and frustration. This book clarified everything about this un-biblical doctrine (and I would probably go as far as to say anti-Biblical). Please read this book, though of course if you lack the time and/or money, I always recommend you read The Bible (sans commentary... or at least until you have a good enough handle of scripture to reasonably determine what is truth and what is in error). Search the scriptures daily and may God help you find him (yes, despite what Calvinism teaches, you are free to seek him! Don't delay! If you are not saved yet, you can put your faith and trust in him today! Why not pick up a copy of the Bible and read the Gospel of John and the book of Romans? Also, I highly recommend TheBereanCall.org, where you can download (free of charge) radio broadcasts of "Search The Scriptures Daily" and many articles and helps by Dave Hunt and the Berean Call staff). Have a great day! :)

This book includes not only the enlarged & revised edition in which Hunt responds to his fervent Calvinist critics but also includes "Honest Doubts", Hunt's helpful fiction rendition based on a composite of true stories. This is an ever increasing problem as now Calvinists no longer refer to themselves as Calvinists or having reformed theology but simply as "biblical". It is unrelenting once it gets into church leadership and our Biblically illiterate church condition doesn't help. If you come to better understand the history related to John Calvin as well as Augustine's doctrinal issues, this book will have done it's job. This book will help give clarity to the problems with this doctrine especially because Calvinism comes across as the "spiritual intellectual" get it, so if you don't understand it, you simply are NOT one of these 'elite' so just follow along. The Pharisees were possibly considered the most spiritually intellectual of their day and they didn't "get"... Jesus! I'm especially thankful for the expanded index in this book as I am in a study in Romans and chapters 9-11 are tough & favorite prooftext for this doctrine. The Calvinist god is not the God of the Bible. This aberrant teaching diminishes God's love, His very essence as well as His power. The God of the Bible says .."whosoever believes in Him, should not perish but shall have everlasting life." The Calvinist says that "whosoever" in John 3:16 really just means "the elect". The Bible says the gospel is "good news of great joy which will be for ALL the people" (Luke 2:10).

Hunt's book on Calvinism is long, but worth the time if you are interested in Calvinism. The book is full of information on the subject and breaks down each letter of the doctrine of TULIP. What Love Is This includes quite a few sources, many of them from Calvinists like Sproul, Piper, MacArthur, Boettner, and even Calvin himself.

While Hunt maintains that there are "fine Christians on both sides" of the Calvinist debate, he proceeds to expose the false ideas that Calvinists have about God and the Bible. Ideas like the words world (as in For God so loved the world) and all (as in through one mans offense judgement came to all...through one Man's righteous act the free gift came to all...) refer only to the elect. Hunt points out inconsistencies found in Calvinism such as the idea that man is incapable of repentance and faith but condemned for failing to believe.

Hunt also shows why Calvin's lifestyle is evidence that he isn't a teacher one should follow. Calvin, like Augustine, believed his form of Christianity should be imposed on others. Besides torture and banishment, Calvin even advocated executing those he deemed to be heretics.

Christian leaders such as Tim Lahaye, Chuck Smith, Elmer Towns, William MacDonald, Chuck Missler, and others gave the book a positive review. Hunt's book is well written, well researched, and one that readers on both sides of the Calvinist debate should take a look at.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nothing better on the topic!

This is the best and most complete erudite exposition on the current teachings of Calvinism. It uncovers a lot of history that has never been previously exposed, and does an excellent exegesis of all that Biblical texts that are used to justify todays twisted Calvinistic teachings and then gives the correct exposition of them. You won't find anything better and more complete on the topic.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Only Book You Ever Need On Calvinism
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 1, 2013
You may say, "But this book is anti-Calvinist."

Well, the quotations and historical evidences are right here in this book, from John Calvin's bloody and unChristian life to common Calvinist attacks on those who disagree with them. Each component is thoroughly and comprehensively analysed. TULIP is solidly and rationally rebuked. There is sufficient presence of the Scripture here. An excellent scholar does not have to be neutral, when a human sees something infuriating, it is certainly natural and okay to criticise it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Receiving not what Amazon advertised.

I had to give it at least one star to get this message to you.
I sent off to Amazon for what was claimed ot be a paperback of Dave Hunt's What Love Is This. Having read many of Dave Hunt's excellent books I'd give then all 100 out of 10 as he is such a logical and biblically sound writer.
However, I did not receive what you advertised. I received a DVD. I found that disappointing as I'd been looking forward to receiving a a paperback.
You need to make sure you deliver what you're promising, especially when people have paid in advance.
