New Jersey raised a total of forty infantry regiments, three cavalry regiments, and five light artillery batteries for the Union cause. New Jersey regiments made up two complete Union brigades. The First, Second, Third, and Fourth regiments made up the core of the First New Jersey Brigade and the Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth comprised the Second Brigade. New Jersey regiments distinguished themselves on the field of battle. The First Infantry lost forty-four killed at Manassas and thirty-seven killed in the Wilderness. The Third lost fifty-eight and the Fourth fifty-two killed at Gaines Mill, while the Sixth suffered fifty-nine killed at Williamsburg and the Seventh forty. At Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, the Eleventh Infantry sustained thirty-five killed and forty killed respectively. Twelve New Jersey regiments are listed in William F. Fox's "Regimental Losses of the America Civil War." The state sacrificed 2,500 men in battle during the war and 3,100 to disease.
