The Left, The Right and The State Hardcover – Print, February 12, 2009

Lew Rockwell's new manifesto is a clarion call creative and thought-provoking on every page for a principled liberty in our time. There are very few books in which you can open up any page and immediately find a quotable and inspiring passage that will make you think hard, laugh out loud, or see things a completely new way. This is certainly one of them.
He covers every topic related to economics and politics, from the business cycle, to trade, to the drug war, to environmentalism. His central thesis is that the threat to liberty comes from both the left and the right, and that neither really offers a consistent way out. The real problem is much deeper than either the right or the left recognizes. It is the institution of the state itself, which everyone seems to want to use to his own philosophical advantage.
The problem, he writes, is that not that we have chosen the wrong flavor of public policy but that we have public policy at all. All forms of policy decisions made by state institutions that affect the uses of private property according to political priorities amount to invasions of liberty. Relentlessly moving from left-wing to right-wing and back to left-wing policy is not progress; it means continued movement down the road to serfdom.
Beautifully edited and pristinely argued, this is a work in applied Austro-libertarian theory, tracking issues and headlines as they occur and bringing the light of logic and evidence to bear on the question at hand. The articles collected can be read in a matter of five minutes each, and they are organized along topical lines.
He is especially good in dealing with issues of national crisis, such as weather disasters, terrorist attacks, and economic downturns. He shows that liberty is more important in these times than any other. And while others back away during these times, he has consistently been out front, calling for peace when the masses are screaming for war, calling for freedom when the politicians demand a crackdown, and urging a free market when everyone else seems to be clamoring for state solutions.
If you have read Lew Rockwell's articles and speeches over the years, and wished for a single collection, it has finally arrived in a beautifully bound hardback that is a real treasure to own and study. It makes a lasting impact.
Rockwell is the founder and president of the Mises Institute, and the editor of his own site LewRockwell.com. He has played an important role in the shaping of libertarian theory for a quarter of a century. This book shows how and why. Subtle, radical, and compelling, Rockwell's book is a great addition to the legendary literature of political dissidents.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 5, 2010This book is an ode to libertarian ideas, written by the founder of the Ludwig von Mises institute.
It illustrates, among other things, the absurdities, failures, lies, manipulations, horrors, errors of the monstrosity that is the State, and show how little fundamental differences there are between left and right.
Don't be scared by the bulky aspect of the book: it is made of hundreds of relatively short articles written by the author during the past 20 years, so you can read through it in no particular order.
Funny, provocative, counter-intuitive, this is a very, very good book that will open your eyes on many issues.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2013This is an excellent primer for those who are interested in libertarianism or expanding knowledge and principles of liberty. The book is broken down into short essays that are easily digested. This is a great book that should be read by anyone interested or concerned about the decreasing amount of liberty. Lew Rockwell is an excellent writer who uses crisp, concise verbiage. Highly recommend!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 4, 2014The presentation is definitely libertarian. Rockwell makes no attempt to conceal his distrust of both political parties. In that respect he is equal opportunity in his criticism.
The sections are very well organized, the articles and chapters concise and easily read. He manages to keep the interest of the reader by presenting his facts and ideas in a way that causes the reader to evaluate their political philosophies in light of the libertarian view. His definition of true liberalism will leave both the left and right questioning the current terminology.
In the financial chapter, Rockwell manages to condemn not only the entitlement programs of the 20th century but the compassionate conservatism of the 21st century as well. The truth is that both sides have allowed the political expediency of the moment to overwhelm the financial stability of the future.
In conclusion the major point of the book is that the government - the state - has outgrown both the right and left. The solution presented by Rockwell, and the Libertarian Party, is to reign in the state by empowering the electorate-the people-to determine their own futures without the aid of overpowering, overwhelming legislatures. Be they federal. state or local, government is not the solution.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2019This book so clearly makes the case about what the state is, and Rockwell makes a great case the left and the right are the issue.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2010A compilation of the works of Lew Rockwell. His ability to explain and argue his beliefs logically and convincingly make this book very important to the libertarian community. I have recommended this book to all my friends and family members who consider themselves conservative and many of them have become "converts" from the Neocon crowd after reading this book and others like it.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2014This book takes a strong Libertarian view point and does't hesitate to point out the failings of big government. Some of the insights and analysis of events were new to me and food for thought.
Simultaneously, I read Tea Party Catholic by Dr. Sam Gregg, who also discussed limited government, but with the added dimension of Catholic Social teaching as the basis for "Human Flourishing" within a society that stressed Subsidiarity in government.
Are these books important? Yes. I am currently reading Charles Murray's book "Coming Apart", which documents the Affluent and Impoverished extremes in America. The breakdown of civic cultures, esp., the family in poorer cities is almost invisible to those in the Affluent bubble.
I have come to strongly believe that Libertarianism (which I prefer) is absolutely unworkable in any society that abandons religious principles. Without the restraints of religious self discipline, Libertarianism will disintegrate into a vicious society.
Nevertheless. Rockwell does a worthy analysis of the hazards of big government.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2018A thorough review of various government policies, debunking each in a colloquial but thorough manner.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2016My political perspective is scepticism for all until I hear what you have to say. This books suite me!
