The authors hadn't intended to put themselves in danger but that's what happened as they interviewed an unprecedented thirty-two battle-hardened defectors about the gritty details of life inside ISIS. With unparalleled breadth, depth and access, ISIS Defectors: Inside Stories of the Terrorist Caliphate offers a compelling view of ISIS from men, women and teens now in hiding, having escaped the most brutal terrorist group in recent history. They were fighters and commanders, wives of fighters-living and dead, female enforcers, and Cubs of the Caliphate, including a child who volunteered and almost got sent as a suicide bomber at age thirteen. They discuss motivations for joining and defecting, and delve into news-making topics: coercing children to become suicide bombers; brides of ISIS and the brutal female morality police; Yazidi and Sunni sex slaves held in massive compounds where fighters use them at will; privilege bestowed on foreign fighters; prisoners kept for the sole purpose of beheading by new inductees. The defectors shared a startling array of photos and videos from personal cell phones and many are included in the digital version of this book. An unexpected subplot unfolded when Dr. Yayla found himself tailed by ISIS, and Dr. Speckhard barely missed two suicide attacks. But the authors are not deterred. As counter-terrorism experts with specialties in research psychology and law enforcement, they see ISIS as more than a terrorist group. ISIS is a brand that falsely sells dignity and purpose, justice and the restoration of glory-to vulnerable recruits-masterfully recruiting some 30,000 members online. It's the biggest influx of foreign fighters to a terrorist haven in history. Using the defectors own words, the authors intend to break the ISIS brand. They have videotaped these interviews to edit them into short clips, memes and tweets for an online counter-offensive. Speckhard and Yayla state that disillusioned ISIS defectors are the most influential tool for countering ISIS propaganda. The persuasive voices of these defectors and the resulting videos will soon invade ISIS chat rooms where their propaganda thrives. With over one thousand active investigations in the U.S. across all 50 states, discrediting ISIS ideology is essential to stopping it.

Both authors bring their own expertise regarding the study of terrorism. I am impressed with their competencies and the methodologies that they employed to develop the information. As a doctoral social scientist professor emeritus with law enforcement experience, my perspective is somewhat different than a lay person. Dr. Ahmet Yayla used direct interviewing of defectors in Turkey and his knowledge of the region as a former police chief in a major city in Turkey, as well as serving as a former head of an anti terrorism unit, and then being the Chair of a Sociology Department in Turkey gave him incredible insight into the issues. His coauthor Dr. Speckhard is also a doctoral level social scientist who has expansive knowledge of terrorism in many cultures. They used direct in person interviews, as well as a creative use of video interviewing via the Internet coupled with other methodologies to gather the information. I will refrain from summarizing the book, but it is well worth reading not only lay folks but governmental and law enforcement types. Some reviewers have noted that the authors took great personal risks. Not many academics are willing to put their lives on the line to develop data. That in itself makes these two authors stand out far above the armchair social scientists who confine themselves to only using data that is far removed from the actual field of terrorism but frequently misses the mark. Both are under direct threat because of this research. That strongly suggests that ISIS does not like others examining their social structure and social organization. Dr. Speckhard is the director of the International Center for the Study of Violent Extremism and Dr. Yayla is a Deputy Director.

This book is long overdue. It lifts the veil on the personal motivations and experiences of ISIS fighters – moving in both directions across the line. It is an important contribution to our deeper understanding and toward more sound policies and strategies for dealing with this seemingly endless scourge of violence. Our focus has justifiably been on the security threat posed by returnee fighters. But if history is any guide, the likely truth will be much more complicated. It is likely that the majority of returnees will be defectors, not infiltrators. They will be war-weary, disillusioned, even strongly alienated from the movement. Their journey out has to be wrought with extreme hazard -- from ISIS stalwarts who will want to behead them, and from the security services of every nation whose frontiers they will cross -- who will want to imprison them. Yet, it could be that their personal narratives will be among the most important renderings of this entire struggle. Balancing this against the clear-and-present security concern will not be easy, but some nuanced way needs to be found to sift out these valuable stories and exploit them in an effective and positive way. Dr. Speckhard and Dr. Yayla have traveled to very dangerous places and conducted interviews with defectors. An enormous accomplishment as they have gotten them on camera as well as recorded their words and translated them.

I can categorically say that finding people and utilizing not only their knowledge but also their very being is critical in our ongoing effort to develop a deradicalization program not only in the United States but elsewhere in the world. As someone who is a former member of an extremist cult myself, I wish to join the many accolades being given to the accomplishment of these two brave individual's work!

While the text offers dramatic and eye-opening first hand accounts of the realities facing individuals inside ISIS territory, the narrative-style format and stated bias of seeking to delegitimize ISIS devalues what could be an incredibly useful scholarly resource. With interview questions formulated to encourage the description of negative aspects of the group and leading trains of discussion questionable on even the least-accurate police procedural dramas, the researchers distract from quality content for dramatic effect. If you're looking for a good story, this may be for you, but don't expect to find an examination of disengagement from ISIS.

Incredible, heroic and elegant work by Dr. Speckhard and Dr. Yayla. This compilation of interviews is a goldmine of confirming, and at times jarring revelations of the true nature and activities of this terror group, even for a full-time CT/CI professional. The authors provide exceptional context and empathy, in this easy to read, must have product. This book is game over, and Dr. Speckhard and Dr. Yayla have just raised the bar.

Speckhard and Yayla produced an unprecedented, exceptional insight into the minds of former ISIS members. The combination of academic and practitioner expertise enabled the two to collectively maximize opportunities with each defector. The authors corroborate information with other sources which highlights their intention to produce a product that yields detailed understanding of the inner workings of ISIS. The insight includes perspectives from all levels of society affected by ISIS, including but not limited to disillusioned commanders, innocent bystanders tortured and killed, vulnerable young boys manipulated to fight and conduct suicide missions. If you want to gain a genuine insight into ISIS, I highly recommend this book produced by two individuals who are each experts in multiple fields.

When Drs. Speckhard & Yayla collaborated on a research project regarding former terrorists, the book is the outcome. ISIS Defectors is based on research and interviews with former terrorists. It is an excellently written book that flows like a novel. I highly recommend it for people in the CT/CI field, those who are interested in the psychology of terrorism, and anyone who is interested in understanding terrorism.
Phenomenal work Drs. Speckhard & Yayla!

You really should read this book if you are interested in understanding how Daesh can find so many followers and how they might be used to prevent others to follow.
Much first hand information you usually don't read in the news.

This book is a must read. It proposes an overwhelming view inside ISIS system. Both Anne Speckhard and Ahmet S. Yayla demonstrate an incredible bravery to transmit these counter-narratives of defectors about the terrible realities of what happens in the closed hell of ISIS. Based on very moving and precise testimonies, this book is a very efficient tool to fight extremism. After that we won't be able to say we didn't know.
