Purchase options and add-ons
"What?" I said.
"The clowns in the Intelligence Community are so damned politicized that I have no idea whether what I’m getting is useful, actionable intelligence or political flapdoodle. So I need you to give it a sanity check."
So begins math teacher and ex Naval Officer Alan Llewellyn's danger-fraught trek into the murky wilds of the U. S. Intelligence Community and the even more toxic forest of the Chinese Ministry of State Security.
In Sanity Check, Alan is hired by Jim Kehoe, his high school classmate and now President of the U.S., to form a small secret group to execute a sanity check on material that Kehoe gets from the U.S. Intelligence Community.
While setting up his sub rosa group, Alan stumbles upon covert activities of China's intelligence service which has agents deep undercover in Richmond, Virginia. Action oscillates between clandestine espionage and bloody violence in this shadow-war.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2013I loved Sanity Check! Walt Breede's Alan Llewellyn books are always interesting, exciting and well-written. This may be Alan at his best! Breede shows us Alan's new involvement with the fascinating inner workings of U.S. intelligence. The compelling plot displays Alan's loyalty, honed probability skills, humor and dedication to family, country, faith and great food! An intriquing page-turner!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2013This book is based on an interesting plot premise. The President of the US does not trust the intelligence he receives from his law enforcement and spy agencies inside the Beltway. He reaches out to a trusted high school track teammate and former Naval officer to build a small independent team of analysts that can give him an unfiltered "sanity check" on the official intelligence reports. So far so good.
The story unfolds in diary style as though reading through a post-op briefing. This too is ok. However, as the plot unfolds the characters fail to develop much personality. Dialog is direct with little suspense or wit or double entendre that might add interest. On one occasion there is an unexpectedly explosive confrontation between the protagonist Alan Llewellyn and the White House Chief of Staff, with no lead-in or build up to help the reader understand or believe the scene. On another occasion Llewellyn confronts and beats up a man conducting surveillance on his house, exposing the reader to an unexpected side of his personality with no preparation, such that the scene seems out of character. The vocabulary range in the book is very basic. The descriptions factual and bland. Profanity is used in a manner that defies character, that is, at times when one would not expect a person to use it. It seems just thrown in for some unknown effect on the reader. While I have no particular objection to its use in dialog, I do expect some context to which I can relate. That is absent.
In summary, what led me to purchase this title was the interesting plot summary. After slogging through it, I am disappointed in the execution. Two stars.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2018I have enjoyed the Alan Llewellyn series so far. I hope the series continues. Can't wait to read the next in the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 5, 2013I read this author's first book and enjoyed it all: plot, characters, details on locals, etc. Same with "Sanity Check." Can't wait for next one.
