Is fake news being spread through social media as part of an information war? Are political operatives publishing disinformation to smear the opposition and help their own agendas? Who creates fake news, how does it spread, and can it be stopped?

What are the real world effects of fake news stories that go viral? Did it affect the outcome of the 2016 presidential election? Or is ‘fake news’ a fake problem, designed to justify tighter control over the mechanisms of sharing information online to drive audiences back to brand name media outlets because their audiences and influence are dwindling?

Media analyst Mark Dice takes a close look at the fake news phenomenon and the implications of mega-corporations like Facebook, Google, and Twitter becoming the ultimate gatekeepers and distributors of news and information.

You will see the powerful and deceptive methods of manipulation that affect us all, as numerous organizations and political activists cunningly plot to have their stories seen, heard, and believed by as many people as possible.

The depths of lies, distortions, and omissions from traditional mainstream media will shock you; and now they’re colluding with the top tech companies trying to maintain their information monopolies. This is

... work of Mark Dice (Communication Major extraordinaire) and was pretty sure that he's a wacky entertainment type along similar ...
I knew that I would run across a chapter or two of Rush Limbaugh type bias in this work of Mark Dice (Communication Major extraordinaire) and was pretty sure that he's a wacky entertainment type along similar lines of attack, the perfect Fool to a Deck of Cards dealt America these days, and hardly the least convincing in his style of writing for this Expose: "True Story of FAKE NEWS." I was not disappointed. And yet, I was sure that I would find a number of his chapters both entertaining and actually informative. I found the book overall to be example of a fairly Smart Cookie making fair observation and assessment of the State of Affair dealing with Average American Intelligence and plain aspects of the average Social Awareness of Americans, not unlike myself. Bravo!"True Story," though? That's open to debate. Where I expected absurdity, I found it. Where I expected information of good quality, on an investigative point of how things are going these days in Media and Politics, I found that also. Ultimately, I'd say that 1/3 of this effort is little better than Flat Earth nonsense, which people of good-will have a right to indulge for themselves, maybe ventilating unconscious frustrations with their own latent stupidity (myself included) as sleepwalking or indifferent Americans. I didn't find this part of the work either convincing nor funny, and rather believe Mark expresses here the same latent shortcomings of perspective which we all, sometimes, fall victim to, victimizing each others' legitimate perspectives along the way. The repeated use of Libtards as a characterization of some colors of political idealism being chief among other common failures, but which do not fatally distract from more cogent points Mark makes on Media and the mania of divisive politics run rampant in America today.1/3 of the book takes a fairly keen look at how American Culture today presents itself in Media and Politics. I believe that much of Mark's treatment here is penetrating and convincing on many points, and in some surprising aspects hints of a complaint which only honest people are able to bring themselves to, in the midst of pervasive political madness. I'd call this aspect of his work a kind of modern "Jeremiad" along the lines of Old Testament prophets, who at least take residence with those who suffer from absurd intellectual mania, whether in Media, Politics or Pop Culture. I do believe Mark is correct on these points, and does a fair job of illuminating them in the round. Bravo!Mark more than merely seems to imply a need for Intellectual Integrity in and for his readers, whom I think he takes seriously by the genuine and quality effort that he clearly made in the best parts of this book. Bravo, also on this point. Ultimately, I think that I like what Mark does here, and what I've seen of his Interview Skills and Communication Craft he has shared with us over the years (I've been a fan for a while, I have to admit...Liberal that I am!), but which has the danger of quick becoming what I like Least about his Craft, going forward...which would be the Flat Earth nonsense of vicious, mocking and derogatory political diatribe. Let's not go there, I hope. We've had that clown show, and deserve better. But that's so far as this One reader and admirer (mostly) goes, MY observations alone, Liberal Arts Graduate that I am. MY bad.~Durandus

Had to purchase this to gain actual evidence about what I always had a hunch about being true, but couldn’t quantify. Marks analysis of propaganda tactics and how they’re still in effect is a mastery and contains info not even on his YouTube channel. Great read.
  • Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2017
Mark Dice is a media analyst (and...occasional conspiracy theorist) that tries to put a comedic spin on some of the daily insanities presented in the mainstream media, hollywood, and politics in general. Much more often than not, he correctly calls out true hypocrisy, true issues, and truly fake news.

This book is his latest compilation of fake news, the majority of which occurred during or around the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election. In it, he splits up chapters starting with concepts, such as fake hate crimes or the historical (and well-documented) power of propaganda. Later chapters see him honing the focus on specific companies and media outlets, citing hundreds and hundreds of instances of fake/misleading news and stories (ranging from potential "honest mistakes" to truly egregious/deceptive pieces designed to manipulate viewers).

It is quite impressive to see all that is presented here, especially given that even though I already follow him on Youtube, roughly half of the topics/fake news examples in the book I have never heard of before. Often, he avoids any sort of comedic tone and attempts to present his findings in a semi-serious, somewhat scholarly order. In that, the book reads pretty well in 1-hour sessions or so.

Unfortunately, this is also where the book runs into a couple problems. The first of which is some glaring grammar/spelling errors that shouldn't have made it to print (spelling errors about once every few pages, and grammatical errors abound [It's "for all intents and purposes" NOT "for all intensive purposes"!!!]). Another month spent with the proofreader (or an additional proofreader) could have helped eliminate the vast majority of these. The second I find in his idea structure. This may be somewhat of a personal taste for how I'm used to understanding works with multiple citations, but he often falls into the trap of idea rambling, where he starts a chapter/thought with a great idea, but eventually loses track of what exactly he's arguing by the end of it. The sourced content usually makes the case for itself, but more clarity and direction on the presentation would really help it read like a more professional work.

Overall, though, the message presented through the book is powerful: think for yourself, question everything, don't fall victim to singular and/or limited sources of information. That important idea alone makes the book a worthwhile read, and warrants the five-star rating. The book hasn't changed my worldview on much, but instead has helped me be a bit more informed on the topics I want to understand more about. If I had a couple small suggestions for an update to the book, I would recommend including an appendix with some relevant charts/data that helps give numbers and values to some of the sources cited. Plus, I would love to see a bit more of the other side of the argument--the left/liberals aren't crazy when it comes to everything, and they do have some good points on some topics. Even with his obvious conservative lean, entertaining the potential validity of sections of the other side within his own book would be highly worthwhile to readers.

First let's face a fact: News reporting has for centuries been a questionable profession. It's just part of human nature to, consciously or sub-consciously, exhibit favoritism or insert errors (unintentional or otherwise) at some point. But never in our country's history has the media gone so berserk and insane as in the last several years. In fact, it has reached the heights of absurdity unprecedented in our history.

Having watched Mark Dice's excellent videos on this topic, I thought that I basically knew how the media was manipulating words, editing videos and the like. However, in his latest book the author has opened my eyes to how serious, unfair and downright dangerous Fake News has become. The layout is excellent, as each chapter covers both the online culprits (Google, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and yes, even Wikipedia) as well as devoting individual chapters to the MSM-CNN, NBC, CBS, MSNBC. This makes the book easy to read and also hard to put down. I learned about incidents, meetings etc. that I was previously unaware of, and how serious the entire matter of Fake News truly is. His conclusion is brilliant, and his suggestions are something we should all take to heart.

If I could afford it, I would have purchased ten of these books and given them out to people I know who still religiously watch and believe the MSM and have never heard the other side of the media coin. Mark's writing style makes the issues easy to understand, and even the most die hard mainstream watcher will have much food for thought after reading this book. My highest recommendation and many thanks to a man who is intelligent and brave enough to take on the "big guys".

I liked the writer's style: clear sentences, well-structured paragraphs. This is first for me because if a book is badly written or poorly edited, I don't often spend much time with it. This book's style is excellent. I also learned a lot from it: I thought I already knew a fair amount about this topic but things I learned in this book were at once shocking and also very helpful. I'm really glad I spent the day reading it: time well spent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Honest insight into a sadly toxic industry
Reviewed in Canada on February 27, 2018
Unfortunately in Canada we have an extremely biased liberal dominated media. Combine this with the CRTC ( with strong employee association to the networks) that regulates television and radio, and you have completely eliminated the posibility for real democracy in this country. One only has to watch Lisa LaFlamme of CTV News acting like a giddy school girl during her first interview of the newly elected Justin Trudeau for validation. Further evidence is how quickly during one broadcast she accepts an explanation from the Prime Ministers Office for a significantly embarassing error trying to be blamed on a foreign government even as all the other liberal news organizations were calling it a terribly failed (some shameful) attempt at damage control. The sins of politicians exist in all parties however in recent years society is no longer led by facts(even when proven). Especially so with liberal supporters who eat up this “you can have anything you want at whatever the cost” philosiphy. Sadly the very biased media in Canada only fuels this emotional rolller coaster by failing to report unbiased facts. When a negative liberal story is so significant that they fear losing all integrity by not reporting it then you rarely hear personal opinion comments, genstures etc. Again to see this just pay attention to how the news is reported! Mark does an excellent job of highlighting what is going on in the media world and how truly biased it is. It focuses primarily on what is going on in the US but the problems and political bias is happening just as much in Canada. Our significant family, cultural and business ties to America make it matter. If you are unable to read a book with an open mind and unbiased perception before you start then this book is not for you. If you are not a blind follower with an unbiased attitude who wants the truth then this is an excellent read. Mark has done a great job of fact finding and coveying credible information on an industry that is now all about business models, has lost all integrity and gone from informing the public to deceiving and manipulating it.

Mark, thank you for the honest insight into an industry that is now toxic and has become more of a threat to true democracy than any one president could ever be even accused of.

Excelent book reviewing and analysing the media. Americans must read it and dont be fooled by cultural marxism ( ex. Frankfurt School and Antonio Gramisch) boosted by new tecnology. Besides mass control, the media can ruin your culture and then your country, as they did here in Brazil. This is not about false news, it is about a war against you culture, liberty and way of lifé.

We know the Mark Dice making the funny interviews on the beach of LA / San Diego regarding the origin of July 4th, the civil war or Black Friday (check the Youtube channel).
What is less known is what Mark is able to achieve through his books !
The True Story of Fake News is a real must read book regarding the MSM manipulation. The book is well organized, easy to read but never simplist, and most importantly supported by hard facts and many references. There is a huge work achieved behind this book which will become a reference, no doubt.
It was a pleasure reading it, and an impacting lecture.
If you know little or nothing about the MSM manipulation, I strongly suggest you to read this book.

Thanks Mark !! Keep going !!
