I think most people visualize the Nautilus of 20,000 Leagues under the Sea as it appeared in the Disney film. Frank Chase has gone back to the descriptions in the novel to realize a Nautilus much closer to Jules Verne's vision. This richly illustrated, full-color volume depicts literally every part of the fantastic submarine. The images are accompanied by explanatory text connecting them to Verne's original words, providing background on how the Nautilus would have worked, and relating its mechanisms to actual technology of the times.
The first part of the book covers individual sections of the Nautilus, with explanations of Chase's thinking as he interpreted Verne's words. The second part is a walkthrough tour of the Nautilus, beginning on the deck and proceeding through interior corridors to all the compartments of the submarine. At the end of the volume, Chase imagines the construction of the Nautilus though images, includes images of his earlier concepts of the submarine, and provides a glossary of nautical terms.
This book will be interesting and informative for all ages and a fine accompaniment to the novel itself.
