After they first worked together on the 1966 film This Property Is Condemned, director Sydney Pollack and Robert Redford continued their long-lasting collaboration with this 1972 drama set during the mid-1800s, about one man's rugged effort to shed the burden of civilization and learn to survive in the wilderness of the Rocky Mountains. Will Geer is perfectly cast as the seasoned trapper who teaches Jeremiah Johnson (Redford) how to survive against harsh winters, close encounters with grizzly bears, and hostile Crow Indians. In the course of his adventure, Johnson marries the daughter of a Flathead Indian chief, forms a makeshift family, and ultimately assumes a mythic place in Rocky Mountain folklore. Shot entirely on location in Utah, the film boasts an abundance of breathtaking widescreen scenery, and the story (despite a PG rating) doesn't flinch from the brutality of the wilderness. --Jeff Shannon

Fantastic movie, but note Amazon "Multi-Format" option is only Blu-Ray

Jeremiah Johnson is an exceedingly well done story about the Frontier, before it was the "Wild West". I love the opening as they talk about Hawken Rifles, and being from St. Louis where the Hawken Shop was located and where Hawken is buried. It shows the harshness and isolation of the lifestyle of the "Mountain Man". Covers every aspect from no matter how soon you got some where, someone always seems to have gotten there first and gotten all the low hanging fruit, or in this case pelts, beaver pelts to be specific to no good dead tends to go unpunished. Basically, it isn't a rose glass depiction of the joys of outdoor life in the wilderness. I do find it to be a wonderful depressuring movie in today's ever connected digital world.

Quick Note: as of February 2016, the "Multi-Format" option is really Only Blu-ray (BD) which it says in the title line, but in the options below it says Multi-Format. Don't buy this thinking you are going to get a regular DVD &/or a Digital Copy

Strange Format But Great Movie

Played well although there was something flunky about it. The opening screen said "prelude" for about 15 minutes and then the movie started. About 2/3 through the flick, it breaks for "intermission" ! I was able to fast forward through these strange breaks without a problem. The quality of the picture and sound was great. My young grandsons will love this flick.

A life changing film

I watched this film with my older brother several times as a young girl and it most definitely influenced my thoughts and beliefs in a real way. Jeremiah Johnson as depicted by Redford is in many ways the epitome of a role model of bravery, ethics and beauty not just in his appearance but in his soul. I remember the ominous feeling I had when he made the fateful decision to lead the cavalry men through the Crow burial site and the devastating outcome. The expressions on Redford's face throughout the film tell a story with very little need for dialog, which the screenplay keeps to a minimum brilliantly 'communicating' the beauty of silence and nature and core principles which need no words to convey their meaning, only action or in-action. This film remains one of my most favorites of all time and every time I see it I gain something new. It is simple and beautiful, haunting and has made an indelible imprint on my heart.

Best Movie Ever!!!

I never get tired of this movie. The romance between fur trapper & mother nature has always intrigued me since I was a child. The absence of Hollywood & dialogue make this movie great. Also both books it is based on are great reads. One is a novel by Idaho author Vardis Fisher, the other more of a myth/ legend compilation attributed to Johnson. Both books can lead to more historical books. In my opinion all fun & worthwhile.

Best movie ever made.

I first seen this movie in the theaters in 1972 and ever since then I have been a big fan of Jeremiah Johnson. The blu-ray version is the only way to see this movie, it makes everything look spectacular, but I do have a digital copy on my cell phone to watch it anytime I want to,lol. Robert Redford needs to make a sequel to this movie before he gets too old to do so. If you have not read the book "Crow Killer" the saga of liver eating Johnson by Raymond Thorpe Jr I highly recommend it, it is even better than the movie which this book played a big part in the story line for the movie. You've come far pilgrim. Feels like far.

Easily within my top ten

I remember, as a kid, when this came out in theaters. It was (and with a decent television still is) visually stunning. This is a film that shows the American wilderness and illustrates much of what makes America great. The story itself is fairly straightforward, but is a great character piece. There are enough themes regarding individualism and individual values to make it accessible to everyone. That, and you're seeing Robert Redford at his zenith as an actor. He takes on all the physicality and facial expressions of the main character with power, yet with subtlety. Another one that is in my top ten films of all time.

Jeremiah Johnson Action packed hearth warming story of a real mountain man

I have seen this movie over a dozen times since it original came out and
I see lot's of excellent photography of the natural lands and natural resources.

Redford plays a very strong willed Johnson who is a loner and learns the ways of the Mountains.

Runs into all kinds of obstacles but learns very quickly the harsh ways of survival.

Johnson learns quickly that he has to kill to survive especially in Indian territory.

Johnson learns the Indian ways as well and even marries one beautiful Delle Bolton and even adopts
an abandoned child "Caleb".

Great movie and full of action and educating as well.

I highly recommend it as one of Redford's best and hats off to Sydney Pollack(deceased now) Great Producer, writer, Director!
