Product Description

All roads lead to excitement with Kurt Russell in Breakdown, the non-stop thrill ride that's "a movie of nerve-frying intensity...Kurt Russell's best performance yet" (Rex Reed, New York Observer). Jeff Taylor (Russell) and his wife Amy (Kathleen Quinlan) are headed toward a new life in California when their car's engine dies on a remote highway. Amy accepts a ride from a helpful trucker (J.T. Walsh) while Jeff waits with the car. But when Jeff shows up at the agreed rendezvous, he finds his wife's not there. The locals aren't talking; the police aren't much help. With no one to turn to, Jeff battles his worst fears and begins a desperate, danger-ridden search to find Amy - Before it's too late!

Tautly directed and superbly photographed, this crowd-pleasing thriller from 1997 is indebted to Steven Spielberg's Duel, but more closely resembles Dead Calm in its strengths and weaknesses. Kurt Russell plays a stressed-out husband whose wife (Kathleen Quinlan) disappears after their car breaks down in the desert. Tracking her whereabouts leads to an interstate theft and kidnapping ring, and as Russell pursues--and is pursued by--a vicious redneck played to perfection by J.T. Walsh (in one of his final film roles), the movie succumbs to several tense, but utterly conventional action sequences. That doesn't stop the movie from being an above-average nail-biter. It is so effectively directed by co-writer Jonathan Mostow that even the more surreal situations seem plausible and altogether unsettling. Russell's performance is key to the film's success--he's smart enough to be admirable, and we can readily identify with his frustration, confusion, and torment. Through him, Breakdown takes on the edgy quality of a wide-awake nightmare. --Jeff Shannon

Good movie, but not without problems. There are some fatal inconsistencies as with many Hollywood movies. The thing that needs to be mentioned is: There are 100,000 missing people at any given time in America, and probably millions over the last 50 or 60 years. Most are victims of the type of random crime kidnapping, prostitution, extortion, trafficking, etc. Many however are victims of the financial elite and politicians, simply for sexual slavery and their own sick satanic ritual, torture, and deviance. FBI office director Ted Gunderson and others have reported/testified on this subject, and found evidence of these crimes. Rarely are the perpetrators prosecuted. There are very powerful and rich real life sociopaths in our society, who live otherwise normal lives and have families (like in this movie), but have double (hidden) lives. Many of them are people like the Rockefeller family (for example), -the financial elite.

I've watched this at least a dozen times over the years since I first saw it in around 2001 maybe. It keeps me on the edge of my seat each time. It's good. Intense on the bridge when that 18 wheeler tractor starts vibrating up and down as that evil man tries to push them over the edge. Good prevails and teaches you things you never should do......don't trust anyone on the road, don't separate from each other, don't leave your gas tank nor car hood open unattended, don't think that you're not being targeted. Always be vigilant. Always plan for the worst and hope for the best. Chances are some evil person is sizing you up for robbing you whwlerever you go.......otherwise there wouldn't be a ln identity theft every couple seconds, a kidnapping or missing person every few minutes, or a murder every few minutes in the country. And we are in the best country. So stats only get worse as you expand your travel distance. A real eye opening experience. It's so true to life.......that's why it's a must see.....I guarantee when you've seen it, it makes you more aware of your surroundings when you travel.

I remember watching this movie on TV years ago and I still believe it holds up today. It would have made a fantastic Hitchcock movie dealing with a man's missing wife. Kurt Russel' character is driving down a desert highway with his beautiful wife when he runs into some very bad people in a truck who want to kidnap young women. The car they are driving 'breaks down' with help from the bad guys after Russel's car is left alone for a while at a gas station (long enough to have some wires disconnected). Stranded, he and his wife run into a 'friendly' trucker who just happens to be driving down the same road as they are. He convinces Russel that he will need to call for a tow truck at the next town so he (stupidly I must say) allows his wife to go with the trucker to the next town to call for help while he waits with the car. First mistake.... never, NEVER allow your wife to go with a total stranger! From there, he finds that same trucker later who denies even knowing who his wife is much less having picked her up at all. And so the mystery begins for him to be in search of his beautiful and now missing wife. The rest of the story is full of suspense and thrills of what he does to find her and what really happened to her. The idea of someone missing and others denying even knowing that person is not a new one. (Hitchcock's older film "The Lady Vanishes" has a somewhat similar theme) But this film adds some very good suspense that is not present in other films with such themes. I do enjoy this film and I hope you do to. I believe it is definitely worth watching if you enjoy good suspense films. I am glad I picked it up.

Ya know how searching for a decent captivating movie can be frustrating as you click forever through Amazon menus. . .cussing that they don't make movies the way they used to? Well, stop right here because you are looking at a BIG winner, a gem in the haystack of boring films!

Let me put it this way without spoilers: for 1 hour and 33 minutes I was transfixed before the TV, no cell phone, no snack breaks, no bathroom. . NADA! . . . a trifecta of being on the edge of your seat. Haven't felt this way since I was a kid watching Hitchcock's The Birds.

For certain you will never take another road trip without remembering searing scenes from this adrenaline spiked film!

It is the commonplace SITUATION of this story that really scares ya, very little suspension of disbelief, very possible indeed.

What I can't figure out is how the heck I missed hearing about this great movie back in 1997. Thanks Amazon for reintroducing the greats that somehow slip into oblivion.

Truly amazing that a couple from the homosexual priest rapist and highway car jacking gang based city of Bossed On would expect "civilization" in the Utah desert. Wife gets kidnapped and naive hubby goes chasing after her including a show of "honoring" the ransom demand for more than the couple ever had. Hubby loses the gun with which he was hoping to take control of the situation while riding the undercarriage of the 18 wheeler of one of the kidnapping gang. At the farm house of the truck driver, hubby manages to regain control of the situation and release his wife from the kidnappers but they chase the couple in multiple vehicles with multiple guns blazing. Hubby wins the dangling from bridge fight scene and the film ends with the couple sitting on the bridge. Exciting suspense thriller with perhaps a "happy ending" if the police in the farm area aren't also corrupt.
