Product Description

Disgraced Swedish detective Jonas Engström (Stellan Skarsgård) travels to northern Norway to solve a brutal murder in Insomnia. Unable to sleep through the night of the midnight sun, Engström quickly loses his grip on the case and his mind. Erik Skjoldbjærg's debut feature is a deft amalgam of psychological thriller, morality play, and police procedural. Criterion presents the DVD premiere of Insomnia in a new widescreen transfer.

This 1997 film from Norway and neophyte director Erik Skjoldbjærg delivers the goods with unsettling effectiveness. It's an intense, smart, and taut thriller if only because what it eerily implies is creepier than the film's reality. Opening with a churning, chilling murder of a young woman, Insomnia invites the viewer--as well as its protagonist, celebrated Oslo homicide cop Jonas Engström (Stellan Skarsgård)--into the mind and thoughts of a killer by making Engström fatally flawed himself. While in pursuit of the murderer, Engström makes a mistake; he accidentally shoots his partner and friend and covers up his deed in a panic. But he overlooks a minor detail: the real killer has seen him commit the crime. What ensues is a layered, complex, and unnerving descent into chaos, brought on by the inability to sleep in this land of the midnight sun. Engström suffers from insomnia, which warps his logic and resolve, and before long he's totally unraveled and unsure of his every move. But not before a twisty transference and countertransference occurs between cop and killer. The two play a game of high-stakes one-upmanship that surprises in the end. Insomnia is fresh and psychologically bent, full of Scandinavian despair and dark humor, and it boasts a film noir pulse beneath its blinding light. --Paula Nechak

The original is always best and this is no exception. Sticks to the book story through great direction with solid acting and use of imagery to create the tension. Unlike its American remake with lots of violence, guns, and gore, this Norwegian film is a beautiful example of how to make a thriller using the viewers imagination more than having to create the visceral images for them. Less is more. The Norwegian police don't even carry guns, an indication of their degree of social civility thus it is understandable why Americans call this one slow and had to remake it into a big celebrity named wham-BAM-shoot-em-up with lots of artistic license twists to keep their audience awake. This Norwegian film is one of the best nourish thrillers Europe has to offer proven by the fact Criterion picked it up.

Now,this one does not need sunscreen! Besides only mad Swedes go out in that glare, but what a glare. From the start of this little seen gem [alas the populace and their derision for subtitles]! However, never be misled, 'tis not what you think it is - here we delve deep into the dark unbeating heart [just a necessary prop] of our sterling knight in shining armor - our supercop sent to this remote little village of the damned, yes, they do move slower, and are paler, the climate perhaps - almost shades of a George Romero vision. Our hero cop seemingly investigates an odd local murder - the corpus delecti has been cleansed of all guilt - washed, and groomed and then dumped - at the local dump. With sidekick in tow and the rather unique local lady sleuth, our trio try to snare the villian [?] of the piece, only this leads to a small catasprophe - sidekick is accidentally bumped off during a botched sting - this is 'pinned' on the 'killer'. AND so it continues, - slightly stained supercop still seeking somewhat serial killer starts to 'add' shall we say his own brand of evidence to this not so glowing crime. Possible shades of MacBeth here, but there's no sleepwalking, 'gilding the grooms within' - oh Yes.
Unlike the current applauded remake this original stands alone - and it is very different from the new Star Vehicle.
A great brittle soundtrack adds tremendously to this product.
Excellent performances by Stellan Skarsgard as the 'hero', Bjorn Floberg as the hapless victim [killer?] caught in the web, and Gisken Armand as the local almost Fargo-type sleuth.
Incidentally - "Fargo" counterpoints this movie superbly!
Gert Froebe's 'missing' 1958 "It happened in Broad Daylight" [aka "Assault in Broad Daylight" has similar sinister tones]

Hitchcock would have loved this one!

A very good film -- with excellent acting. Thought it would be too much like The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, but it was completely different, even if the protagonist appeared in both. Excellent performance on his part.

I like the original Swedish one best, which this is. The American version is good too, with some variations in plot. The Swedish just have an added touch.

I bought this DVD rather blindly and fell asleep the first time because the Norwegian language was lulling me, but the movie is excellent and worth repeated viewings. The story is really interesting, and the protagonist is truly an ethical void. The new version is disappointing, nowhere near as good as "Memento." Pacino's detective isn't sleazy, he's just burnt out. The ending of the new version is long, draggy and typical. The conclusion of this version is great; concise, climactic and satisfying. If the language barrier wasn't a real hurdle for me, I'd give it 5 stars.
