Even after 70 years, the greatness of CASABLANCA remains timeless. This captivating classic, so vividly played out and cinematically crafted, is a textbook example of the Hollywood studio system at its absolute best.

The 70th Anniversary Blu-ray Edition restores the film's pictorial splendor, surpassing the previous version which used too much DNR. This time the film's inherent grain texture isn't smoothed away along with a measure of sharpness, but is evenly configurated resulting in perfect black and white image resolution that replicates 35mm film.

CASABLANCA is offered both as a Blu-ray/DVD special combo package and as a single Blu-ray disc. The big set comes with an array of bonus material, much of which was bumped over from the previous Blu-ray edition, including the commentaries by Roger Ebert and Rudy Behlmer. There's also some photographic and printed memorabilia, and a few new documentaries on the making of the film, on its director, Michael Curtiz, another on the history of Warner Bros., and one on its chief mogul, Jack L. Warner. The single Blu-ray has all the video/audio extras except the two Warner documentaries, and doesn't include any memorabilia items.

One of my all-time top favorites, CASABLANCA is a movie I enjoy playing again and again, and if that's true of you, then this upgrade is a must.

TITLE: Casablanca (1942) • NR • 1:42:37
Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Paul Henreid, Claude Rains
Michael Curtiz (Director)

This is the movie that people who say that they don't like "old" movies, will tell you that they like. This is the movie that people who know nothing about Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman or Claude Rains have heard of (and, most likely, have seen). This is the movie that guys who say that they don't like "love" stories, will tell you that they like. This is the movie that most film critics and film historians, for the past six DECADES, have considered to be one of the BEST two or three movies EVER MADE! Those of you that have seen it know why. And, those amongst you that have never seen this movie (you poor, unfortunate, souls), should do yourselves a BIG favor and buy it (NOW!) — trust me, even if you claim to NOT like old movies, you will not regret the purchase of THIS movie. This movie is considered by many (myself included) to be amongst the greatest love stories (and, BEST films in general) that have ever been committed to celluloid! It is an excellent example of what happens when a great script, a great director, a great cast, and great film technicians come together as one. Highly recommended. See the other reviews for more detail and/or other opinions regarding the plot of the movie.

With this transfer of Casablanca, Warner Home Video has reached new levels of excellence in presenting its movies on blu-ray — particularly for its older catalog titles. It is amazing that a film of this age (74 years and counting at the time of this writing) could look this good.

The American Film Institute voted "Casablanca" the second-best American film ever made. "Entertainment Weekly" gave it the number three spot among their "100 Greatest Movies." At the time of this writing, the user ratings at the Internet Movie Database ranked it number nineteen in the site's "Top 250 Movies of All-Time." And a scientifically formulated and rigorously administered survey of both the Wife-O-Meter and myself placed the film squarely at number one. What more can a person say about a movie that defines the word "classic"?

Is it any wonder, then, that the folks at Warner Bros. have re-released the film numerous times, first to theaters, then to videotape, DVD, HD-DVD, and Blu-ray? For this "70th Anniversary Blu-ray & DVD Combo" edition, they have outdone themselves, providing not only a handsome, numbered gift-box set with a slew of new bonus materials, they have even remastered the film from an all-new 4K scan and given it a lossless DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

The accolades, the awards, the adulation, and all the tender, loving care are not bad for a film that almost never was. After all, when Warner Bros. made it in 1942, they considered it just another back-lot studio melodrama. The studio had been churning out these things by the boatload every year, using their usual stable of contract players. With a script that writers were reworking daily and a plot that mystified everyone on the set, it's a wonder the studio ever finished the film, let alone its becoming one of the most famous movies ever made.

When did I first come to it? Well, it wasn't in 1942, I can tell you that. But it wasn't all that long afterwards.

Absolutely one of my all time favorite movies! Though I never thought Humphrey Bogart had much of a range as an actor, he portrays the jilted and bitter Rick absolutely brilliantly in what was originally just a “B” movie. This classic film examines the relationships and life of a cold hearted business man who runs a club in Casa Blanca, Africa, which is on the refugee trail for Europeans (escaping the horrors of World War II) heading for America. Rick “sticks his neck out for no one” until one day when the beautiful Ingrid Bergman steps into his club accompanied by her hero husband portrayed by actor Paul Henreid. From this point we discover the character Rick is much more of a hero deep down than anyone imagined. Claude Rains provides a great contrast portraying the local playboy, out only for himself “poor corrupt government official.” In the end, these characters stand up to the Nazi war machine as they embark on the “start of a beautiful friendship.” This DVD beautifully captures the original black and white classic movie that should be on every classic movie lover’s shelf.
