More than 30 years ago I listened to a lot of VdG and Peter Hammill. I stopped listening to them when I spent about ten years barely listening to anything and when I got back into music (my mother having sold all my old lps at a garage sale!)they had fallen off my radar. I don't know why - I thought then they were damn brilliant, but Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins et. al. seemed to occupy my ears then. Now I mainly listen to alt.country, but a few months ago, in a nostalgic mood, I bought Pawn Hearts and Trisector and liked them a lot - Pawn Hearts still sounds fresh and vital and Trisector shows a band that never went stale.
Today I could not resist buying this and I have just heard it and am now replaying it, and ordering another five of his albums. I simply don't understand why he never became huge - but I think the same about Kevin Coyne, Tim Rose and Town van Zandt and other marginal geniuses - so much for my understanding of the market.
Irrespective of popularity there is so much talent in these songs - the voice is rich and dramatic (but not corny), and the production is great, very lush (absolutely not VDG). To me it sounds very commercial - though not in a 'sell out' way. It just sounds the kind of music that one would expect most people who like music to like - there is nothing they have to work at (unlike VDG), yet there is a wonderful intelligence in the material and performance and production. Beautiful songs, beautifully crafted, exquisitely sung, and wonderful lush arrangements which, though, still manage to be restrained enough for the songs to breathe (not an easy feat to pull off). Some of the songs that recognized from my youth are simply lovely in these arrangements.
Listening to this it is difficult not to conclude that he is every bit as good as Dylan or Cohen or Townes or Nick. I'm glad Peter Hammill is back in my world - and I would recommend anyone to buy this. Put it on and look out at the sea or sky and drift away.

Peter Hammill's career-long quest for the perfect exposition of the love song has resulted in some of his finest compositions. 'The Love Songs' is a 1984 collection of the best examples - revisited and remixed and now in a 2007 remaster - from a number of earlier albums. Hammill has always had, as Q Magazine noted, 'a penchant for a considered romantic ballad', and his emotion-packed delivery and evocative, heartfelt lyrics perfectly suit the form. Centrepiece of the album is the opening 'Just Good Friends', a dramatic orchestral reworking of the original from the '83 'Patience' album. The album is packed with many other Hammill classics: 'The Birds' and 'Vision' from '71's 'Fool's Mate'; a haunting 'Don't Tell Me' from '82's 'Enter K' and a re-voicing of 'The Looking Glass' from the original Hammill heartbreak album, '77's 'Over'. Perhaps these songs succeed so well because Hammill is not content to deal in the usual pop-song platitudes and banalities. He explores the theme of love from both sides of the tracks - while songs like 'Again', originally from '74's 'In Camera', and 'If I Could' from '78's 'The Future Now', are intimate portrayals of loss and relationships reaching their end, 'My Favourite', from '79's 'PH7' and 'Vision', are celebrations of contentment and passion. 'The Love Songs' is an 'easy listening' Peter Hammill record, notable for its warmth and accessibility.

A collection of literate and structurally complex love songs. I can understand the cult following, because his songs are not always immediately accessible, not being strictly in the verse-chorus-verse format and not giving up their melodic intricacies at a cursory listen. In this way, his solo work reminds me a lot of Peter Murphy's. My favorite here is the delectable "Ophelia" with its poetic lyric and simple yet inspiring melody. This gem of a song deserves to be appreciated by more people. I admire the fact that he has always pursued his own creative path without ever bowing to whatever the commercial mainstream was at the time.

A great introductory CD of songs of hope and more often of tragedy. Great songs like "If I could" are left intact others improved on. You must buy this!
