Many Hackett fans consider "Defector" to be the last album from his classic solo period. The album is another solid effort from Hackett featuring a nice mix of vocal and instrumental songs. The emphasis here is still on progressive rock in the classic 70's style, but you also hear the beginning of some more adventurous experimentation which would permeate Hackett's later releases. "Defector" would be the last Hackett album to feature someone other than himself on lead vocals. The guitar is the main instrumental focus on much of this album, as it should be, and Hackett pulls of some really nice work throughout the disc. The album opener "The Steppes" has become a live classic with other tracks like "Slogans", "Time To Get Out"; "Leaving" and "The Toast" are all strong ones. Hackett even takes a stab at a rocking commercial single with "The Show" which is almost funk / disco in nature, and actually works much better than you might think it would. The album closes with a novelty 1920's style ditty called "Sentimental Institution" which reminds me of some of the stuff Freddy Mercury used to do with Queen. Overall I don't think this is Hackett's best album, but it is another solid release from a guitarist who has been sadly overlooked by the mainstream over the years.

Mr. Hackett is a brilliant guitarist and has been ever since his days in GENESIS.

So far I've only heard this and SPECTRAL MORNINGS remasters. This one isn't quite as compelling, at least as far as the bonus material. With the exception of HERCULES UNCHAINED, a b-side that hasn't been available on CD the rest of the bonus tracks are live versions. They're nice, but Hackett has made a huge amount of live performances available, both on CD and DVD. Because of this the live material, while good, isn't as interesting as alternate mixes and versions featured on SPECTRAL. The remastered sound is nice, but if you already own the previous release you might want to save this one for later. If you don't, then no worries . . . . this is one of Hackett's best albums and is highly recommended.

The last of the great classic Hackett Recordings before a roller coaster ride of better and not so good recordings followed. The 5.1 version is special though, as the multitrack tapes have been lost. So it's pseudo 5.1 but still a good listen.

Hard to top Spectral Mornings, but Defector's great in it's own right.

As a HUGE Genesis and Steve Hackett fan from back in the day, I bought the original LP when it came out and really liked it. All these years later however, this CD totally rocks my world! I whole-heartedly recommend it!

Another reason to listen to a solid musician and song writer in the progressive rock arena. This man creates moods.

Never as big as the predecessor

Coming in around a year after Spectral Mornings [with the big title track] comes Deflector. To start off with, never impressed with the cover.
The original album is remastered with a B'side and a live track. It also features the full Reading Festival seti n 1981 which includes some Spectral Mornings tracks but nothing from the Genesis era. [Wonder if fans at that festival were happy or not.]
Added to the set is a surround sound "pseudo" up-mix of the original album. Seems the original tapes were lost, leaving just the stereo mix tapes.
As for the album itsel, while it isn't my favorite from Steve, he has some good tunes including The Steppes and Jacuzzi.,

Steve Hackett and band are outstanding. Stunning compositions, arrangements, performance and sound engineering. Especially stunning multi track presentation of the music on the DVD audio.

Reviewed in Japan on September 30, 2017

Defector Returns
Reviewed in Canada on June 8, 2014
Virgin Records 2006 remaster of Steve Hackett's 'Defector" is another case where the upgrade in sound makes what was already an outstanding album even better. Hacket just flows on this album with superb guitar playing and inventive / brilliant song writing. The song 'Steppes' is exceptional. This 1980 album became a top 10 success in the UK charts. Extra bonus songs round this out.
