Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
This is not your father's Christmas album. Loreena McKennitt's primary instrument is the harp, but her primary technique is to take a traditional folk song and supersize it with strings, modern rhythms, and lush orchestration. It's a style that works ideally with this material. Her takes on "The Wexford Carol" and "The Stockford Carol" will make you rethink holiday songs. Other highlights include "The Seasons" and "In Praise of Christmas," all songs that are weepy enough to please Grandma but never so sappy they sound fake. Add two cups of hot cider and a roaring fire, and this album will turn Scrooge into a fan of the season. --Charles R. Cross

Some of the best songs include In Praise of Christmas/To Drive the Cold Winter Away, Snow, and Let all that are to Mirth Inclined, the last of which will send chills down your spine as you listen to McKennit sing with haunting church bells tolling in the background as the only accompaniment. The tone is somewhat severe and the accompanying instrumentals are spare but beautiful. McKennit sings, backs up her own vocals with more vocals, plays harp, and plays viol. Is there anything she can't do? I think this is her prettiest album period. If you love her, you MUST hear this album. Goes right along with music by Anuna and Secret Garden, for a ballpark on the type of singing here.
At 4.99 for the album, you won't regret it!
This is a collection of "Christmas" songs but it is definitely not a collection of carols. They are songs of midwinter and the voice and instrumentation conveys that theme as well as the lyrics. They would not be out of place in a medieval hall.
This is not a somber collection but it might well be perceived as such by someone expecting ditties about reindeer with red noses or jolly old elves. It is a joyous collection with the joy is sedate, as is the whole album. That does not stop it from being a masterful work of art.
Try this one and let it haunt your memories through the winter and the rest of the year.

any problem. Overall, a very nice addition to the collection I'm building up of Loreena's music.
