Nothing succeeds like excess--at least that's the case with Queen's breakthrough classic, A Night at the Opera. On one level, the title is a reference to the band's operatic pretensions, best in evidence here on the classic "Bohemian Rhapsody," which was championed by headbangers a generation before being revived by the Wayne's World set. Of course, A Night at the Opera was also the title of a Marx Brothers movie, and the reference isn't lost on Queen, who seldom scaled the heights of pomprock without a knowing wink. The album is remembered for its meticulously produced bombast, but the truth is that there's a wide variety of material here, from the gorgeous piano-based "You're My Best Friend" and the McCartneyesque "39" to the music-hall-style "Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon" and the pedal-to-the-metal rockers "Death on Two Legs" and "I'm in Love with My Car." First off, I had absolutely no issues with my copy as others have experienced. I believe it’s the cheaper Hollywood Records pressing is the version people are complaining about (for good reason!). But this half speed mastered Virgin records version is Amazing! It’s flat and quiet. The sound is fantastic! Solid pressing of an iconic rock album! The soundstage is wide with great separation and crystal clear highs mids and lows. The album is Very bassy. I think all Queen records are bass heavy so that was to be expected. Listening to this I get the feeling of sitting in the studio with Queen! Beautiful. Very nice pressing. They should scrap ALL the Hollywood Records pressings of all Queens records! It’s awesome that they’ve all been pressed again by Virgin. So happy and I highly recommend to every Queen fan. This is truly their best album overall. A true masterpiece

The review is about the 2015 "half-speed remastered" edition. The disk I got is made in Germany, so one would expect great quality, right? Wrong! The side one is covered with craters and bulges, and one of the bulges seems to have some white material embedded into it, attaching a picture (no, it is not dust or paper). The side two is OK, the only reason I gave it two stars instead of one. Sending it back for a replacement, will keep you posted.
Update 4/30/2019 - got a replacement and found bulges on both sides, attaching two more pictures. I will try another replacement now, but no high hopes at this point ...
Update 5/2/2019 - got another replacement, and it is virtually flawless this time, thank you Amazon.
I also got a 2008 Hollywood Records vinyl release of the same album, and my advice to you - get the 2015 half-speed remaster, it sounds worlds better. Just be patient if you get a lemon on a first try.
Update 5/11/2019 - I spoke too soon - side two has a bulge in the beginning of the first track, plus that side has lots of surface noise, requested another replacement, will keep you posted...

Arguably Queen's Seminal Work

Everyone knows Bohemian Rhapsody and You're my Best Friend, as well they should. But the rest of this album is also fantastic. This is Mercury and May at their most inventive. May's guitar work and sonic experimentation is about as unique as it comes. Do yourself a favor and check out the "dixieland brass section" on "Good Company" done entirely with guitar. There's another "dixieland brass section" done entirely with kazoos on "Seaside Rendezvous." Who else could have come up with that? Sure, Clapton did a group kazoo thing on Unplugged, but it was 20 years later. The vocal harmony work on this album is unparalleled. And not just Freddie's overdubs, but May, Deacon, and Taylor backing Mercury. Yes might have had more ambitious harmonies in a theoretical sense, and indeed Steely Dan, especially with Michael McDonald backing (think "Peg" here;) CSN more organic and perhaps emotional; but none of these was as tight and polished on record as Queen on a bad day in the studio. And these were certainly Queen's best days in the studio.

This album is best known for producing the monster Queen hit "Bohemian Rhapsody" which has become an all time classic still receiving major airplay more than 30 years after it's release. The album also spawned John Deacon's "You're my Best Friend" another huge hit. I think this was the album that introduced me to Queen back in the day and I remember being totally fascinated by it. I had literally never heard anything like this before, and it remains a truly unique album to this day. Queen throws everything at the wall to see what sticks and for the most part it all works. The album contains metal, progressive rock, pop, ragtime, folk, ballads pop, hell even a song about being in love with your car! It sounds stupid, but Roger Taylor's gritty vocals and percussion work make it irresistible. "Death On Two Legs", "39", "Love Of My Life", and "The Profit Song" have all become Queen classics Ya gotta love it, and this album shows everything that made Queen great.

Disque vinyle, il est épais, lourd, environ 181 grammes sur la balance pour cette galette.
Galette propre , pas de poussière ou autre pollution.Pas de défaut cosmétique.
Pas de voile marqué, une toute petite, très légère ondulation sans conséquence à l'audition !
Plus qu'excellente qualité de pressage, pas de bruit de surface et aucun craquement, ni sur les blancs séparant chaque morceau ni sur les plages musicales.
Pourvu que cela dure.
Exceptionnelle dynamique, très bonne richesse spectrale, de beaux effets stéréo. Très bon niveau de gravure qui permet de ne pas de pousser l'ampli dans ses derniers retranchements.
Ce remastering de 2015 est qualitativement et indéniablement un pressage que l'on peut qualifier d'audiophile.

Cet avis sur la technique, bien entendu, est valable pour l'exemplaire que j'ai reçu; la production des disques vinyles est "industrielle" (me semble-t-il)
il est tout à fait possible, probable qu'il y ait des disques bien moins bons et d'autres bien meilleurs. On ne peut qu'espérer que cet échantillon
soit représentatif de la qualité moyenne de fabrication de ce disque de Queen et il aurait été particulièrement chanceux d'être tombé sur un exemplaire parfait
(tous les gagnants au loto ont néanmoins tenté leurs chance :) ) ou à contrario de tomber sur un échantillon "pourri" et inaudible relèverait de la loi de Murphy
mais cela arrive plus souvent que l'on croit, et j'imagine, j'espère que dans ce cas là, Amazon le remplacerait.

Somptueuse pochette double au très beau graphisme épuré, on ne se lasse pas de la regarder, blason de Queen sur fond blanc en négatif au noir de "a day at race",
de plus la pochette intérieure contient les lyrics toujours très appréciés !
Le disque est bien protégé dans une pochètte souple, doublée à l'intérieur d'un film transparent type polyéthylène (?) très fin.
Le disque est très facile à extraire de la pochette de protection.
En plus de la pochette souple qui protège le disque on trouvera une seconde prochette de protection (?) plus rigide ornéé de quelques photos.

Je considérerais presque que "A night at the opera" et "a day at race" sont en réalité un seul et même double album.
Difficile d'écrire un avis sur cet album, tout a été déjà dit, ce qui se dégage de cet album,
ce sont les harmonies vocales propres à Queen, un son qui est leur marque de fabrique.
Archétype du rock opéra, baroque, Queen vous emmène là ou vous ne vous attendiez pas !
Album sans morceau faible, qui se termine (non presque il y a encore en final God save the Queen) en apothéose avec Bohémian rhapsody. Qui écraserait presque ce disque par sa beauté et l'émotion qu'il dégage.
Album exceptionnel tant techniquement qu'artistiquement, un plaisir toujours renouvelé de l'écouter en analogique.
