Product description
Gabriel,Peter ~ Birdy Soundtrack
Amazon.com
On Birdy, Peter Gabriel plunges headlong into the experimental moods and ambient textures he'd been toying with for more than a decade. It's a vibrant and absorbing effort. Though still falling back on snippets from his previous work, the compositions here give clear signs of a maturing taste for the non-Western instrumental concepts and tonal resonance that would later explode with 1989's Passion. The quiet pulse and lush production that open the foreboding "At Night" pulls strange splashes of melody into "Floating Dogs." The track then metamorphoses into a series of tribal rhythms and sinewy, melting minor-key chords. While the record is a departure, some of the best material here reworks thematic elements from past recordings. The use of "Not One of Us" from Peter Gabriel (third album) makes "Birdy's Flight" a standout, providing a midrecord burst of jolting, propulsive prog-rock before turning back into the surreal and trancelike mist. An engrossing and atmospheric dreamscape. --Matthew Cooke

The material that's recycled is in many cases quite interesting-- the delicate piano line from "Family Snapshot" (titled "Close Up" here) is lovely by itself, and both "Birdy's Flight" (from "Not One of Us") and "The Heat" (from "The Rhythm of the Heat") stand nicely on tehir own.
Of the new tracks, most of them are haunting and of a delicate beauty ("Slow Water", "Dressing the Wound", "Slow Marimbas"). Its really all quite good, pretty stuff.
But I did only give it three stars, and largely for two reasons. First, I don't really feel any emotional content or attachment to this music-- instrumental music, particularly of an ambient or minimalist vein (as much of this is) is often very hard to convey emotion, and I don't think this succeeds in all cases. The power, for me, behind much of Gabriel's music has always been the severely high emotional investment into his pieces he puts. This is quite unlike his more famous soundtrack to "The Last Temptation of Christ", an album titled "Passion". In fact, "Passion" is quite the other reason that I rated this only three stars-- "Passion" is so stunningly good and by the same composer that invariably, I find myself comparing them, and very few soundtracks can hold up to that one.
So perhaps my rating is unfair, but when I want great instrumental music and Peter Gabriel's style, I don't grab this album.

Probably, one of the most innovative and adventurous musicians of his time he is also honest in adding the source to the film titles.
Australia had 'Not Drowning Waving' and 'The Church' who would explore similar avenues of expressions with 'Proof' and 'Bastard Universe' respectively.
Should either of those appeal to your taste then Gabriel's film score will also appeal.
Fairly short at around 35 minutes it is, nonetheless, a very interesting listen but obviously, like all film music, it works better when married to the vision.
Supplier was great - product exactly as described, excellent condition and prompt service.
