Editorial Reviews
Product Description
The Oscar parade for this 1981 drama featured statues for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Costume Design-and one to Vangelis for Best Original Score. This remastered reissue features the inspiring title theme (one of the most famous screen themes of the '80s) plus Five Circles ; a side-long suite of themes from the film, and more lush electronic Vangelis music.

One of the most memorable soundtracks of all time, Vangelis's Academy Award-winning Chariots of Fire is such a landmark, it's become the stuff of parody whenever someone wants to punch a hole through sloppy sentimentality. But just go back to this 1981 film to relive a perfect marriage of image and music. Vangelis captures the heroism, grandeur, and pain of this racing drama, from the opulent main "Titles" theme with its echoing snare drum and piano cadences to the electronically abstract setting of Sir Charles H.H. Parry's choral work, "Jerusalem." Vangelis's score hangs suspended between orchestral lushness and electronic mood, sweetness tempered by the underlying psychological themes of the film. Often forgotten on this album is the extemporaneous title suite that, in the days of LPs, took up the second side of the album. Here, Vangelis explores some of the film's music cues at length, weaving them into a minor keyboard symphony. --John Diliberto

"Abraham's Theme," a piece full of faraway starlight sends the soul a-dreaming along with those who set their sights upon the heights they dare to reach in their lives no matter what other people say.
Tune in to track 4, "Eric's Theme," and you can almost hear the stately drone of Scottish bagpipes and thrum of an accompanying drum corps within Vangelis' own interpretation of the signature musical style of Eric Liddle's homeland. Just for the heck of it, I once envisioned the idea of an actual bagpipe-and-drum corps playing this, and the beauty and power of the sound in my head brought tears to my eyes!
"100 Metres," track 5, is a drifting, sparse nebulaic field of wonderous synth-manipulations that characterize Vangelis' knack for creating a tight, anticipatory mood--especially to suit the race that Eric Liddle refused to run, citing religious beliefs, thus the smooth transition to track 6, "Jerusalem," the melody and lyrics of which Vangelis did not write, but the second verse of which lent its fourth line to the title of the movie itself. ("Jerusalem" was originally a poem by mystic-poet William Blake, and the musical setting was later written by the Englishman Charles Hubert Hastings Parry)
Track 7, "Chariots of Fire," is something of a bring-it-all-together, cosmic tapestry of the various musical themes Vangelis uses throughout the score, including, of course, bits and pieces of the French national anthem, the title theme, Eric and Abraham's respective themes and so on, melded together with the Synth-Wizard's knack for powerful chords, shimmering, glimmering synth-workings and percussion sections all guaranteed to make you want to stand a bit straighter, look your fears in the eye and go for what makes your heart want to soar among the stars, or run a few gold-medal races--with Vangelis as your score-meister! :D
The opening measures of the track "Titles" is haunting, memorable, and inspirational all at the same time.
I used to own this album on cassette, and I'm happy to add this digital version to my collection.
5 stars through and through!
