My husband had this many years ago in a cassette tape. I got it fir him in cd format. (He no longer has a cassette player.) He really loved the cd.

Since this album first came out nearly 30 years ago - I was in Hong Kong at the time and remember buying the cassette in a little record shop in Wanchai - it has always been right at the top of my all-time favourites list, which for me is saying something considering my enjoyment of a number of different genres.
The first track, I'll Find My Way Home, is full of positivity about the search for meaning and the benevolence of life, and slides effortlessly into the epiphanic and extremely dynamic State of Independence. These two tracks have been included in a number of Vangelis compilations and as a result have tended to overshadow the next two equally hypnotic songs, Beside and The Mayflower, the last of which features the mimicry talents of one David Coker, as does the title track, the extraordinarily creative and original Friends of Mr Cairo, with its changing melodies and sublime lyrics that weave between mystical experience and the appreciation of old films. Here's a sample from towards the end of the 12 minute track:
Did you see in the morning light?
I really talked, yes I did, to that early dawning light,
And I was privileged to be as I am to this day,
To be with you, to be with you, to be with you, to be with you...
After that comes what for me is the low point of the album, the rocky and rather out of place Back to School. Perhaps the lads felt a ballast was needed after what had come before. But the last song, Outside of This (Inside of That) brings back the sublime and hopeful mystical feeling that characterises the bulk of the album.
Of the four Jon and Vangelis albums this is probably the most impressive, though others might disagree - certainly it is the most consistently excellent and shows both the highly original Jon Anderson and the magnificently gifted Vangelis Papathanassiou at their brilliant best.

I was really looking forward to this combination of talents under one roof, and I was not disappointed when I listened to this album. I thought that Jon and Vangelis would be breaking some new musical ground, but I don't think so. This sounds a lot like another Yes album - but they put Vangelis in as the keyboard guy! This is excellent music, but there are a couple of songs that sound downright hackneyed and cliche-ridden. This is excellent quality music, but I was really hoping for more new sounds than what I heard.

This was among the earliest albums I bought on compact disc. I had sold my vinyl copy many years before and was eager to hear the title track again. I am not a great fan of Yes or Jon Anderson's vocal styles but The Friends of Mr. Cairo truly captured my imagination. As a child the movie theater was a home away from home so the song evokes those emotions of being in a darkened movie theater absorbed in the iimages on the screen. It around the 5:20 minute mark where those moments become even more vivid where it becomes an out of body experience and one is absolutely absorbed in the movie and there are those fleeting moments when you are no longer a physical being seated in a rundown single screen theater. The song is a true homage to the magic of cinema in a era long gone now. No Bogart, no Edward G. Robinson, no Bette Davis, no Jimmy Stewart. We have truly lost the Maltese Falcon The album has few quite good tracks, including my second favorite State of Independence which has been covered by Donna Summer and The Pretenders but it's centerpiece is the title track. Very beautiful.

Memorable songs from the ‘80s with signature Jon Anderson (from Yes) vocals and complimentary collaboration with pioneer synthesizer composer John Vangelis. Great to hear these songs again.

This is a fun music track and brings back fond memories of when this CD was first introduced to me. My husband and I drove from So. CA to Seattle to stay with friends. Our friend played the song, "Friends of Mr. Cairo" for us and we were entranced from the first moment. It gets you involved cos they're telling a story and it's lush with visuals. The opening grabs you and holds you through the entire song. This is our second purchase of the CD...my husband let a co-worker borrow it and we haven't seen it since!

An unlikely pairing of Jon Anderson and Vangelis yields interesting results. Definitely not heavily Yes influenced but very unique in its own way. Vangelis does his thing but Jon's input brings more into the realm of songs instead of musical pieces. I bought it as a cassette when it came out and the Amazon CD price was right so I bought it out of a sense of nostalgia.

I finally got around to picking this up after over 20 years of missing it.
Hypnotic, mesmerizing, eclectic, emotive and most of all: fun. I have extremely fond memories of hearing this excellent collaboration on my dad's amazing hi-fi system when I was still living at home. I was blown away. Can't believe it's taken me this long to get a copy. My memory wasn't wrong, and though I don't have quite the high end equipment my dad did, it's still every bit as enjoyable now as it was then.

Jon And Vangelis の名盤
Reviewed in Japan on June 22, 2002

Reviewed in Japan on January 11, 2004
