I'm going to keep this short.

Many think Joshua Tree is their best, but this album is their best. Bono was at his most aggressive, the dude was on fire, especially on New Years Day and Sunday Bloody Sunday, and Seconds is as relevant today as it was when it was first released. The remaster sounds outstanding, and the artwork is just very artsy, its just an outstanding album.

I find it hard to believe that I have never written a review for this album.
First of all I believe U2 had never been as rocking and driven as they were with WAR, they have not been since it either.
Song by song the album might not seem as good, but this is one of those strange situations where the whole is much more than the sum of it's parts.
This album features their first two real master pieces New year's day and drowning man.
The latter not as known to newer fans, it is a haunting song that provides us with a different U2.
The anger and determination, their youthful energy, talent and focus, just blended perfectly in this album, creating the epic closer for their early album trilogy.
If this album misses the label 'masterpiece' is by frustrating inches, probably because of "The refugee" it would have been a much stronger record without it, as it stops the flow of the record and sounds totally out of place.
This is all of course my opinion... but I feel WAR is light years ahead in terms of musical and lyrical contents than pretty much most of their albums, specially their two newer ones (yes that ones that sound like a rehash of their "old" sound cough *sellouts* cough) All that you can't leave behind and How to dismantle an atomic bomb.

Regular songs: 40 (Great lyrics and all but as a song itself it feels weird)

If you have heard U2 and recall their "old" albums (Joshua tree, Unforgettable fire)
Do yourself a favour and listen to their true old sound and roots... I guarantee this four young lads will impress you way beyond the Joshua tree and you will, now, truly know what you REALLY can't leave behind.

It is hard to believe that this album was released over 25 years ago, but to my ears it remains one of the top albums in the entire U2 catalogue. Listening to this re-master from a perspective of many years down the line, the songs still bristle with an urgency that blasts through the stereo. These songs still sound both important and relevant even after the passage of so much time. The music on this disc is relatively simple in nature, but like many of the greats of rock n roll, U2 are experts at using the skills that they do possess to make quality music. The album produced the huge singles "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and "New Years Day" for which it is best known, but almost all of the rest of the tracks here are equally as good. The only real track here that sounds dated is "The Refugee" and even it is such a great song that you hardly notice the 80's polished punk sound. My only complaint with the album and the reason I give it four stars instead of five is the final track "40". Through much of the track Bono is singing quite noticeably out of tune. It is so bad that the song is difficult for me to listen to. The live version on "Under A Blood Red Sky" is much, much better. Other than "40" this is a five star album all the way and still an essential album of the 80's.

I'll admit that the first couple times I heard "War" the only songs I liked were the first four. After youve listened to it for a while, though, the songs definitely grow on you. I think part of this was because Bono's voice, even though it's pretty incredible most of the time, becomes a little questionable in certain songs (see "Drowning Man" for an example). However, if you listen to the songs enough then you begin to understand that it actually tends to work with the lyrics. The lyrics are about the troubles of war, and Bono sings, especially in the song I mentioned, like someone who's wailing or crying - it definitely works with the material given. Most people only know the two hits off this album ("Sunday Bloody Sunday" and "New Year's Day"), and while those are classic songs the rest are just as good. The lyrics are especially interesting, memorable and deep - "Sunday Bloody Sunday" being the best example, I'd argue. Musically no other band sounds like U2, and considering this came out in the 80's one can see how influential this album was. Bono's voice might not be for everyone on some of the songs, but those with an open mind will be able to look past that. All in all I'd say that this is another U2 classic and one that most people should really enjoy! Absolutely recommended!

If I hadn't had a flood in the house, loosing so many cds to warping, I would never have known about this restored version. It sounds amazing and is a joy to listen to. Este disco de U2, es para mi uno de sus tres mejores obras. El tercero de su discografía con el que despegaron para convertirse en una de las bandas de rock mas significativas e influyentes de ese género durante los años 80 y 90. Realmente todo el disco es bueno, destaca mucho en las composiciones el bajo de Adam Clayton, quien le imprime mucha energía a las canciones y que no solo forma parte del soporte de la melodía, sino que la producción y los otros miembros de la banda decidieron que destacara, de ahí hasta los otros discos, que le dan al grupo parte de su sello distintivo. En mi opinión las mejores canciones son Seconds, New Year's Day, Drowning Man, Red Light y 40, son mis favoritas, pero TODO el disco es muy bueno. No menciono Sunday Bloody Sunday porque es el sello del disco y a pesar de ser una gran canción con mucha fuerza, fue tocada hasta el cansancio.
En cuanto al formato del disco la calidad es de las mejores que he escuchado en las reediciones de discos LP recientes. El material que usan para la pasta, el disco en si tiene un sonido supremo, sin ruidos, rayaduras, distorsiones, ni "clics". Además tiene un pequeño cuaderno extra con las letras y fotos de la banda. No duden en comprar el disco LP (vinilo) si tienen dudas de su calidad, no se van a arrepentir
