Long a favorite of U2's original core following, October not only avoids the sophomore slump, but adds an edgy, emotional resonance to the buoyant self-confidence they showed on their debut, Boy. Though producer Steve Lillywhite deserves mention for helping effectively frame the material with production that manages to be both stark and atmospherically murky, this is the music where Bono, Edge, and company first show the potential that would make them superstars. Lacking the sometimes ham-fisted polemics that would mar War, The Joshua Tree, and later works, October has an oft-tortured sense of emotional and philosophical ambivalence that only underscores concerns that range from the crypto-spiritualist yearnings of "Gloria" and "Rejoice" to more anxious moments like "I Fall Down," "I Threw a Brick Through a Window," and "Fire." In retrospect, they may have peaked early. --Jerry McCulley

1. Gloria (8.7/10) - You've probably heard this song, so you probably know it's a great song. Nothing to say that hasn't been said before.
2. I Fall Down (7.3/10) - You can hear the progression from Boy. It's a more complicated song, but the lyrics are a little lackluster. A fine song, but nothing to get worked up over.
3. I Threw a Brick Through a Window (7.1/10) - This song reminds me of "Shadows and Tall Trees" from Boy, but it's not as good. The drums to open are cool, and so is the bass, but it feels a little mishmash. It's a testament to the song that I still consider it a good one.
4. Rejoice (6.8/10) - Sounds like an attempt to make "I Will Follow" pt. 2: guitar intro with the drums faded in. Once again, though, it isn't as good. The lyrics are pretty uninspired and the song is so repetitive.
5. Fire (7.4/10) This is a pretty good song. Very atmospheric and the echoes are great. My knock against this song is that it could have easily been 3 minutes. Instead it drags on pretty aimlessly in the middle and again towards the end.
6. Tomorrow (7.6/10) - If this song doesn't scream Old Testament in the intro, I don't know what does. You can hear things pick up a bit in the background 2 minutes in until the real explosion 3 minutes in. I really love the last minute and a half of this one.
7. October (7.5/10) - We were due for a downer. I initially didn't like this one, but it has grown on me. Great piano work on this one.
8. With a Shout (Jerusalem) (9.4/10) - I love this song. Easily in my top 20 U2 songs of all time. The wiry guitar is amazing as are the drums. I wish they did they had more verses, though, because they're just awesome.
9. Stranger in a Strange Land (6.3/10) - Hard to follow a juggernaut like 'With a Shout,' but this song doesn't do it for me. Don't have much more to add other than it's just OK. Can we listen to 'With a Shout' again?
10. Scarlet (6.8/10) - Did this album really need another piano-focused transition song. Granted, this is better than 'October,' but this song doesn't feel necessary. I think the piano is nice, but not sure if we needed this track.
11. Is That All? (7.2/10) - Almost sounds like any early version of 'Two Hearts Beat As One' (one of my absolute favorite U2 songs). Larry has some nice moments on this one. A good closer.
Ultimately though, all that I personally can say about October is that it's top-notch music, from start to finish. Even if you separate the supposed religious overtones from its overt presentation (which is what I usually do), you are still left with music that is undeniably spiritual, anthemic, and arousing. From the powerful "Gloria" to the delicate "October," all the elements of great rock are here -- memorable songs and melodies, strong vocals, soaring guitars, and earnest bass and drum lines (in other words, what classic U2 is all about).
I doubt that October can be truly pegged as die-hard "Christian rock," although some of it certainly can be interpreted that way. My advice to anyone who is vacillating over whether to buy this CD because of its religious content (or to those who already own it and have put it on the back burner for the same reason) is to approach the album with a secular view. Look for universal themes, not for metaphoric advocation of God or biblical references. For the devout, of course, October can probably be seen as an even deeper experience. But regardless of how you look at it, this is a quality U2 offering (and I for one can't tell that Bono had to reconstruct any of the words).
It sounds better than it has ever been. I would recommend if you really love and enjoy U2's earlier work.
You will be pleasantly surprised at how good the sound is now then it was originally on CD.
