The ill will that initially greeted Rattle and Hum--the follow-up to the band's massively successful Joshua Tree album--was due in large part to the bloated and self-important feature film that accompanied it, which showed the band as being simultaneously naive and pretentious as it "discovered" America. But as the film mercifully slips from memory, the music has remained, from the furious swirl of "Desire" and a clutch of live hits to insightful musical nods to heroes such as Bob Dylan, John Lennon, and Billie Holiday. Songs like "When Love Comes to Town," a supercharged blues duet with B.B. King, suggests the quartet knew more about America from listening to its music than Phil Joanou's unintentional mockumentary suggested. --Daniel Durchholz

2. Van Diemen's Land (7.8/10) - This is a really good song. Edge has some nice vocals. I like that it's just him and his guitar. Doesn't need anything else.
3. Desire (7.6/10) - Probably the most famous from this album; it's a good song. A very fast paced, straight-ahead song. Lacks any real artistic qualities in contrast to everything on The Joshua Tree, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
4. Hawkmoon 269 (6.6/10) - There is no reason this song needs to be 6 1/2 minutes. Really loses any appeal it had 2 1/2 minutes in. If this track truly was mixed 269 times, why didn't anyone say "Maybe we should try a version that is 6 minutes!!"
8. Silver and Gold (7.2/10) - I really don't know why I like this song, but I do. Almost has a sing-along quality to it. Another track that would benefit from not being 6 minutes. That speech in the middle is also a bit much.
10. Angel of Harlem (8.5/10) - My favorite on the album, and that's probably a widely held opinion, but it's a great song. This song doesn't sound cheesy like a lot of the other tracks here. Bono's soaring vocals are on point.
11. Love Rescue Me (5.8/10) - I don't want to spend time on this song. Way too long and not even OK. A mediocre song that just drags on.
12. When Love Comes to Town (6.9/10) - This is an interesting song, but it's not a U2 song. This song is viewed pretty unfavorably now, and even though the rhythm is OK, it feels really cheesy.
13. Heartland (8.4/10) - This is a great song. When the drums kick in and you hear Edge's backing vocals in, it sets course for a very atmospheric track about America's landscape. Bono does a great job on the chorus and the final one is excellent.
14. God Pt II (6.4/10) - You want to cringe just reading that title, and the song doesn't do anything to quell that. The one thing this song gets right is the length and some of the guitar parts sound faintly Achtung Baby-esque, no?
17. All I Want is You (8/10) - A long track, but one that respects your time. The quiet opening transitions perfectly into Edge's guitar riff. I'm also a fan of the lyrics on this one. Fantastic closer.

Also to look out for is the band's live performance of Hendrix's 'All Along the Watchtower', as well as the gospel-ified 'I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For' and 'Silver and Gold'.
A really great album, and great to have on physical disc. 17 tracks for a great price, and the CD itself has some great stuff in the little booklet. Definitely recommend.
