Vangelis entered the '90s with this fairly low-key album of electronic interludes and sparkling, poetic vignettes in honor of a city. He uses an enormous array of digital and high-tech sounds to describe his metropolis, suggesting that such a city yet resides only in the future."Dawn" is a simply lovely paean to the opening light of the day. Light strings and melancholic trumpets rise over a skyline painted ambient shades of orange and ecru. "Side Streets" begins with humming sequencers and sad violin stabs as car motors awaken. Voices litter the sidewalk, as flutes pipe in the oncoming day. "Nerve Center" finally introduces engaging rhythms and lurching guitars into Vangelis' mix, portraying a teeming environment of bodies-stressed laborers huddled over their desktops, banging on surfaces with copper tubes. Vangelis' over-looked best album

I don't care what the others say, this is Vangelis' best album (and I own 16 of them). What makes it better is that it creates the atmosphere of "a day at the city" from morning to night, and it does this in a way no other album I've ever come across was able to. Dawn and Morning Papers create that dreamy "just waking up" feel, as you get a cup of coffee and commute into the city, and the city sounds are still subdued (early in the morning). Nerve Center is the city at it's bustling peak of the day (lunchtime). The later tacks create the afternoon and evening and the romance of the city, with a seductive female voice during Good To See You. This makes this album a complete package, with every song being an integral part of the city "experience". No other Vangelis album is able to create such a timeline. A lot of people (even Vangelis fans) are unfortunately passing over this gem. One of the best electric albums every produced.

I own most of the Vangelis catalogue, so read this review in the context that I'm a big fan. Everyone knows most of his more popular work, so I'll stick to reviewing this less-known gem. V melds genres to the extent that categorizing his work is difficult, and this is how I do so: jazz fusion, eg Spiral and Direct; orchestral, eg Heaven and Hell, Oceanic; atmospheric, eg Blade Runner and The City. Blade Runner is a masterpiece, and I'm sure this will cause some foaming at the mouth, but I enjoy The City as much as Blade Runner. The City surprises constantly: rich, earthy, vibrant, complex textures that you wouldn't expect. I hear new things every time I listen. Initially, The City may seem like background music, but if one turns up the volume a bit and really listens, one will be rewarded with a unique listening experience, more auditory art than music.

there is probably no one that will like this review, but I only bought this soundtrack because I LOVE his work on Blade Runner
and wanted it to continue.

The City is very good, but it often feels "empty" and yes, for an artist like this, I know what that means

If you are looking for a follow-up to BLADE RUNNER, I recommend OCEANIC over this, although know that neither matches the vibe of BR.
