Editorial Reviews
Product description
1972 album which was to become an artistic and commercial landmark. Feat. Peter Gabriel on vocal duties.
Amazon.com
Foxtrot marked a decisive point in Genesis's career. An emerging art-rock band who were building up a growing cult following with a busy touring schedule, this album was an artistic and commercial landmark; it was their first album to chart. Including the classic "Watcher of the Skies" and Peter Gabriel's whimsically compassionate slice of life, "Get 'Em Out by Friday," the album's highlight is the ambitious sidelong epic "Supper's Ready." Comprising seven linked subsections, it was inspired apparently by a frightening experience where Gabriel's wife, Jill, felt she was possessed, and is a story of two lovers and the struggle between good and evil. Certainly it was the most innovative and entertaining piece the band had produced to date. The relatively rough production values could be seen as either detracting somewhat from the impact of the album or adding a pleasantly rough edge to what might otherwise be a somewhat prim sound. --James Swift

Genesis was my favorite band throughout the Peter Gabriel years, and I was privileged enough to see them with Mr. Gabriel for their Selling England tour and their Lamb Lies Down tour. I loved their composition and performance, and was pretty impressed with their production as well.
So when I heard they were releasing a new digital remaster and stereo mix, I was very excited. I thought I would hear what I was familiar with, but with more clarity and more punch.
Instead, in my view they fixed what wasn't broken. There is a lot missing in these remasters that were iconic elements to songs we know and love. In some cases, an extra syllable is added where we are used to not hearing it; in others, a percussive nuance that sets up the next part of a song is completely removed; etc. It was like they felt they had to do something different when it wasn't called for. As one comparison, look at how Giles Martin remixed the Beatles 50th anniversary editions of Sgt. Pepper, The White Album, and Abbey Road. In them, he left in everything you remembered and loved, but made it better -- clearer, more punch, more cleanliness, more definition. He didn't change something just to say he did it, which I felt was done here.
If you're a Genesis fan, I would still recommend you get these. You'll hear some new things you never heard before. BUT...if you are getting your very first copy of this album, get the original instead. It's mixed better.
In terms of peripherals, the packaging is outstanding, as seen in the photos. It's a very good presentation.
So overall I would give this a "recommend" for diehard Genesis fans. The rest of you are fine with what you already own.

Aficionados of the group's Peter Gabriel-led heyday will of course point to the 22-minute progressive jamboree that is "Supper's Ready" and this masterpiece really does deserve the plaudits it receives to this day. Really half a down songs in one, Genesis take the confidence to jam on for us long as they bloody well please that they found with the Musical Box and crank that to the next level.
So much does Supper's Ready dominate the album, both in terms of length and its sheer majesty, that the rest of the record is often overlooked but it would be churlish not single out numerous other highlights. Watcher of the Skies kicks us off with a familiar, imposing organ and Genesis cover band "The Musical Box" typically begin their impressive shows with that powerful refrain.
Horizons is Steve Hackett's twist on Bach and is a short but sweet prelude to the main course of Supper.
My personal favourite track on the album, however, is the somewhat obscure "Can-Utility and the Coastliners" - an excellent audio delve into some less well-known English history followed by a satisfying burst of Tony Banks' frenetic keyboards.
A remarkable album, and incredible to think that Genesis were able to outdo it with their next album, "Selling England By the Pound."
A masterpieece, one of Genesis best albums ever.
