Though the matriarch of the family, Maire' (now spelled Moya to lessen the chances of mispronunciation), is the lesser known of the "Brennan" clan artistes.
Maire', as mentioned countless of times, is the lead vocalist (and one of the primary lead instrumentalists) in the band CLANNAD as well as being the older sister of the overly famous Enya.
Sadly, her solo efforts do not sell to the levels comparable of her band, and pale when compared to the international sales of her sisters works. Much of the issue stems from Moya's leanings away from customary Celtic structures and tones (as compared to the more historical CLANNAD) and writes genuine songs replete with substantive (even spiritual) lyrics and densely rely on real musical instruments (unlike the works of her more famous sister.)
This album, MISTY EYED ADVENTURES, is in my humble opinion, her best solo album. On this album, Ms. Brennan sampled many different musical genres, mostly within the cultural instrumentation of her Celtic background, to create a unique tapestry of sounds and songs.
Almost every song stands far apart from the others either in sound or in lyrical context... most notably being the title track MISTY EYED ADVENTURES, which is, in my opinion, one of the loveliest songs to have ever been recorded.
Written for her toddler son, the song whales cathartic of the hopes and dreams that she dotes on her son, offering an overarching meaning of life.
Believe it or not, Ms. Brennan even touches a little country and western nerve on the song DREAM ON. THE MIGHTY ONE is a breathtaking chant for the hero to save us. THE DAYS OF THE DANCING stands somewhere in between and is a truly unforgettable song that makes one wonder why genuine music somehow has become lost amid the fluff and flounder of modern pop drivel.
The weakest track on this album, as so many have noted is, BIG YELLOW TAXI. Moya attempted to remake this cute (yet socially meaningful tune) and turn it into a mothers ballad. The revelry of Joni Mitchell's effort is what carries her original version of this environmentally and romantically charged icon. The somber tone and flawless vocal performance just do not compare (and should not be compared.) She created a completely different song - good or bad. I do not skip over this track in my desire to listen to other tunes... so I would vote for it to be 'good.'
What is more amazing, watching Maire' (Moya) perform these solo songs in concert showed the true talent (vocal and instrumental) that transcends the band and makes Enya's later works seem trite in comparison.
None of Maire's solo albums are bad. A few seem a tad over-produced for her lilting, motherly style... but for my best review, I begin with MISTY EYED ADVENTURES. Its eclecticsm alone is the best reason to begin with this album, if not for its mastery.

After listening to this album you will "know who wears the crown" in the renowned musical Brennan clan(nad). Forget categories, this is just plain beautiful music, with inventive instrumentation, gorgeous harmonies, and interesting songs, all but three written by Maire. There is much variety in the instrumental sound here. Of particular note is the Arabian-style playing of the bouzouki in "Days of the Dancing", dobro (a very effective Nashville flourish) in "Dream On" and "Misty-Eyed Adventures". Also in the title song is a lead melodic instrument that sounds like a muffled wooden marimba - could that be the African djembe? And what provides that resonant xylophone sounding melodic percussion in "The Mighty One"? For anyone interested in these unusual sounds, song-by-song musical credits would have been welcome. But for those simply interested in beautiful music it hardly matters. Although Maire mixes English and Gaelic lyrics on many songs, only "A Place Among the Stones" seems fully Celtic in inspiration, perhaps cloyingly so, and is my least favorite song on the CD. These are my favorites: "Pilgrim's Way" has clanging church bells and multilayered vocals. Maire gives me chills on the low notes (e.g. "city of joy"). "The Mighty One", brings an air of suspense "Will they know who wears the crown?" and up-tempo chanting. Thrilling is not too strong a word for this, and it's my favorite song on the album. "Heroes" is a mixed success, with a great Gaelic intro, just Maire and drums, developing into a drum-driven extravaganza, but marred by excessive "la-la"-ing from Maire's backup sisters. "Misty-Eyed Adventures" (the song) is tenderly rendered and full of exquisite vocal harmonies. Just listen to Maire's gentle trill on the word "you" in "I'm there when you fall", and she will make you shiver. Behind that pure, quiet voice hides a lot of skill! Finally, "Dream On" is the most American sounding of the songs (Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi" excluded), with dobro taking the lead and a gentle rocking beat, my second favorite on the album. Dare I suggest in this age of crass commercialism that it could have been a hit? The other songs are good too, but these merit special attention. This is a very, very strong album, and Mighty Maire definitely wears the crown.

Maire Brennan has a beautiful voice as you'll see when you listen to this album. I can't pick out a particular favorite tune but on every track you'll see that she really layers things with melody and of course the lyrics. Her sister is perhaps better known, but Maire is probably just as good in her own way, you won't be disappointed.

Her music is so mystical, I feel as if I am in Ireland walking through the fog with her. A nice musical vacation anytime!

Celtic Beauty at its finest
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 23, 2013
I'm sure this artiste is well known to other purchasers, but, she is, totally new to me. Maire Brennan's name, is one I came across whilst looking for something else - perhaps it was an Amazon "Those who ..." - This album has a haunting beauty, which, took me straight away to another world entirely . There is, on a track or two, more than a nod towards World music, (judicious use of Indian Continent percussion instruments), and some beautiful backing (vocal) harmonies here and there. I liked this so much, I, simply, HAD, to get her 2006 album, in my collection, for good measure (is it called "signature" ?). That said, I don't think, anything, released by Maire could fail to delight the ear and refresh the soul. Magic, meeting the laser lens, meeting you.....

Wer Clannad mag, der mag Maire (Moya) Brennan sowieso
Reviewed in Germany on September 1, 2013

Reviewed in Germany on December 14, 2002
