Harvard-educated mathematician by trade and sociopolitical humorist and satirist by avocation, ivory tickler Tom Lehrer sang irreverent ditties that both outraged and delighted listeners during his on-again, off-again heyday of public performance in the late 1950s through the 1970s. Perhaps best known for his "Poisoning Pigeons in the Park," Lehrer combined razor-sharp wit with dry delivery inspired by everything from vaudeville and ragtime to whimsical show tunes and faux folk. Though a tad dated, Lehrer's wickedly pointed That Was the Year That Was is as good a representation of the mid-'60s American social and political climate as any. Recorded live in 1965 and composed largely of songs from the contemporaneous NBC series That Was the Week That Was, the album takes on boho Americana ("The Folk Song Army"), censorship ("Smut"), and the atomic bomb ("Who's Next"). Devilishly funny as well are the outstanding "Vatican Rag" and the puzzle that is "New Math." --Paige La Grone

"When someone makes a move/ Of which we don't approve,
Who is it that always intervenes? /The UN and OAS all have their place I guess/But first send the Marines!"
Lest you think, however, that this is yet another bash-the-hawkish-conservatives comedian, Lehrer leaves nobody unscathed by his wit. This includes the Sputnik-phobic education system, which is so intent on producing brilliant mathematicians it has just introduced the "new math" policy (being a mathematician--Lehrer was at the time a mathematics professor at Harvard--he is especially good at lampooning this benighted lunacy), which Mr. Lehrer dices, slices and juliennes in a song for which he provides absolutely useless visual aids in the jewel cover insert. "The Vatican Rag" could hurt the feelings of the Catholic feint of heart, but in truth, it's just a hyperbole on the fact that everyone expected Vatican Two to get the church to really let things loose. Which, of course, it didn't. After all, it's the church. They couldn't exactly go back and re-write everything. My two very favorite songs have also stood the test of time: "National Brotherhood Week" and "The Folk Song Army." Both attack what we now call "political correctness" , the first by reminding us of that old adage, you can't legislate morality. But "The Folk Song Army" is an absolute gem. "We all hate poverty, war and injustice, unlike the rest of you squares." You will never hear folk music the same way again, you'll always be asking yourself....but isn't everyone against that? Do these people ever take an unpopular or courageous stand?
It's hard to choose which CD to buy first from Tom's collection; the songs on this CD happen to be the most memorable for me. You can't lose with any of his recordings, but this one will certainly do as an introduction to his sharp wit and breezy interaction with the audience.
This is a good choice for us Boomers who will still remember some of the issues he is singing about (like Vatican Rag, about the decision, controversial at the time, to do the Mass in the vernacular rather than Latin). Don't buy it for the music, it's the lyrics that make this enjoyable.
Top reviews from other countries
Although the album available here is relatively expensive at nearly £15, each track of this 37 minute masterpiece is a classic in it's own right. I spent many a happy day as a student playing this album to my friends, and then singing with them, anthem-like, in many bars around South Wales. His numbers are as catchy as they are wickedly funny.
A few lines from my favourites:
Once der rockets are up, who cares vere zey come down?
Thats not my department, say Werner Von Braun.
Stories of tortures
Used by debauchers
Lurid, licentious and vile
Make me smile
The city streets are really quite a thrill
If the hoods don't get you the monoxide will
Israels getting tense
Wants one in self defence
The Lords Our Shepherd says the Psalm
But just in case, we're gonna get the Bomb!
Anyway, I don't want to spoil it for you. I urge you to buy the CD now though. Lehrer comes in and out of style, and you may not get the opportunity to grab this album for ages if it goes out of print. It has taken me a decade to find a replacement for my worn out tape with this CD!
Whether you think it's his best work or not, you'll definitely get a lot out of it. Enjoy!
'Pollution, pollution - Use the latest toothpaste and then wash your mouth with industrial waste.' (From 'Pollution'.)
'Do whatever steps you want if you have cleared them with the Pontiff' (from 'The Vatican Rag' - you have to hear it.)
'UN and OAS, they have their place I guess, but first - Send the Marines' what's changed?
I sing and play these songs to my fiancée who wasn't even born when they were recorded and to even younger friends of my kids. They laugh like drains. Some of the references may be dated but the wit still strikes home and rings true.
Swift's Gulliver's Travels, especially in the unabridged version, is as illuminating and relevant today as it was nearly three centuries ago. So it is with the body of Lehrer's songs half a century after he wrote them. You can't say that of Gilbert and Sullivan.
