Some contend Roxy Music peaked on their first two LPs, the ones with Brian Eno. Others contend they were best on their next two LPs, without Eno. Country Life is the second LP of the latter grouping, and it probably is the highpoint of the band's career (although its predecessor, Street Life, is stiff competition). The haunting, melancholic "The Thrill of It All," the art-rockin' "Out of the Blue," the almost-pure '50s rock of "If It Takes All Night," and the decadent Berlin-before-the-War affectations of "A Really Good Time" all lead to the concluding "Prairie Rose," Bryan Ferry's campy ode to Texas and amour Jerry Hall. This was "alternative" rock before the term existed. After this, Roxy Music became an entirely different band. --Bill Holdship

Ferry switching from a Nashville informed (or is it California?) Country Pop on "If It Takes All Night," finds the true venue for some of his most artistic predilections on "Bitter Sweet" which gets challenging in a theatrical kind of way, but is played with such humor it wins one over (Roger Waters favorite Roxy tune? Sounds much like very late PINK FLOYD). "Three Of Nine" is an unexpected marvel. And I'm terribly fond of the instant classic "Out Of The Blue" and "All I Want Is You" and the 16th century stylings of "Triptych" (a little PHYSICAL GRAFFITI anyone? In all fairness, I think it goes both ways. I hear a bit of HOUSES OF THE HOLY from '73 here as well.)
A lesser band would have saved the epic scorcher "The Thrill Of It All" for the close, but this band had more and more tunes to boggle their listeners with. "Casanova" is postured a supremely smarmy rock song, self conscious, revealing more than the narrator intends. The majestic second to the last track, "A Really Good Time" defines this album. How did ROXY MUSIC keep it up? So many wonderful songs so beautifully produced, so financially unrewarding in USA sales including concert tickets. I know when you listen close, that you won't miss the inspiration and influence of the last and perhaps best track "Prairie Rose" and it's subtle progression and beauty. Brian Ferry is a master, and had for a brief moment assembled around him the best Rock and Roll band in the world.
Overall this qualifies as Roxy's hardest rocking album up to this point. Paul Thompson has a lot to do on this album especially on the opener "The Thrill Of It All". As with the best of guitar oriented glam rock it poetically celebrates the noisy decadence the genre represents and here does so with gusto. "Three And Nine" and "Out Of The Blue" both take on more elaborate art rock flavors but the emphasis again is on the rock. "If It Takes All Night" actually goes right back to the old 12 bar blues rock n roll shuffle of yore. "Bitter Sweet" and "Triptych" return to the artier sensatibility. 'Casanova" takes on the previous albums interest in groove based music with a thick funk rocker, making it another strong highlite. Another one is "A Really Good Thing",a midtempo piano ballad with some classical/soul Stevie Wonder-like chord changes that suit Bryan Ferry's elastic voice extrememly well. Ditto on the country rock closer of "Prairie Rose".
So there we have it. Another wonderfully diverse collection from Roxy music that runs the gammut from rock to funk to country-pop. And as with a lot of music of this era everything is done in such a way that it sounds 100% natural and organic for so many divergent pop styles to be together in the same place. It's not terrible for musical diversity to stick out like a sore thumb. Often makes things interesting. But to have that diversity come together into a whole is....a creature all it's own. It makes for the best jazz, the best rock and you really couldn't have funk and later hip-hop without it. Over the years rock music has become built heavier around "schools". And luckily Roxy Music came at a time where they could be themselves before having to be concerned about having to be all things for all people.
