How customer reviews and ratings work
Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

Great album!

After Siren Roxy called it quits. This strong return showed that the band was more than willing to incorporate new musical styles into their own unique sound.
The last album to feature four of the five original members, Manifesto adds the ingredients of new wave, sythe pop and even disco into the band's art rock sound. The resulting soup is rich and spicy without sacrificing the band's trademark quirky sound.
The dark, swirling vertigo inducing Manifesto, straight ahead rock of Angel Eyes (this newly remastered version features the original song not the disco remix that appeared on later editions and the first CD), funky Ain't That So and delicate Spin Me Round are among the albums stand out tracks. All would have fit in well with any of Roxy's classic songs.
The sound on this edition is spectacular (it was remastered by Bob Ludwig with Bryan Ferry's input using the High Definition Compact Disc system). Ludwig manages to capture the warmth of the original recording without sacrificing the detail inherent in the CD format.

This is an album for which mp3 downloads were made. "Manifesto" was the most disappointing Roxy Music album. Though not without its redeeming moments, as a whole it was as lifeless as the mannekins on the cover.
If I was assembling the highlights of Roxy Music's catalog for the mp3 player I'd grab the title track, the two minute rush "Trash", and perhaps "Dance Away" and/or "Spin Me Round". The best of the lot is "Trash", which seems like a nod to new wave without resorting to mimicry. The title track "Manifesto" takes a while to build, and when the vocals kick in, the song reeks with drama like some of the classic Roxy Music numbers, but it never quite comes together. Both "Dance Away" and "Spin Me Round" are typical lovelorn Bryan Ferry songs. Depending on your taste you could go for both or neither.
Instead of shelling out for the rest of this you could download the first three songs from Avalon as its highlights, the first six from the strong Flesh And Blood album, and, added to the few from this album, you'd have "Everything You'd Want By Roxy Music (1980s)" for less than the price of a CD.
Reissues might make this more compelling by adding the b-side "Trash II" as a bonus track.

Reviewed in Japan on July 17, 2008
