The lyrics to White China expose how our culture manipulates the masses and it is just sad. Midge sings, "Everything you do is worked out for you." White China is pretty scary according to Midge. According to me countries that perpetuate the illusion of freedom are scarier. At least the people in White China are told the truth. I'm told I'm free and that I can vote for two parties, my vote counts, marriage makes sense, education is equal, smoking policies should be controlled by the goverment and business owners should have no say, you can't be naked in any public place, to be a good person just go to church, say the pledge of allegiance, etc... At least they tell you the truth in White China. I hate being lied to every second of every day and find this song appalling as it doesn't objectively recognize the subjective manipulation we all face. Instead the song illustrates the dangers of swallowing propaganda full throttle. Heart Of The Country is brilliant. Yes you despise the Heart Of The Country because subtle control and being lied to sucks worse then cultural design. Stop the illusion and I will continue to play Heart Of The Country it is an awesome song. One Small Day and Lament are pretty effecting as well. The rest doesn't get played in this household, but that is personal taste.

For some reason, had put off upgrading 'Lament' and I'm glad I waited until now. Remastered sound and cool, flat black CD packaging with shiny black highlights makes this one a keeper! THIS is why digital downloads continue to be unattractive unless no other viable alternative.

Quite like this--back in the '80s, I had several Ultravox albums and 12" singles (remember those?) but not this one for some odd reason. When the remastered editions of their back catalog came out, I purchased "Lament" along with some albums I'd owned on vinyl or cassette and this one actually ended up being my favorite. Good songs, excellent use of synths and traditional instruments, plus some bonus tracks (the 2 instrumental versions aren't super necessary, but the extended mixes remind me of dance floors in my distant past, in a good way) "Dancing With Tears In My Eyes" indeed!

An excellent album, it just got better every time I listened to it, and I sang along to the songs that described the lament that is my life, it soothes my pain well this album, especially the song Dancing With Tears In My Eyes. Synthesizer Pop of the highest class.

One of the best albums of the 80's great music, anything with guitars and synthesizer done the right way can take you places...

Ultravox, one of the greatest bands of all time.

Just one of those bands I loved as kid. Wanted to hear that old nostalgic 80's music again. Been too long.

The Neighbours Never Complained
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 11, 2013
With the album's name a hostage to fortune, `Lament' was issued in 1984. I was nineteen at the time, and loved most of this album to death, playing it loud and consistently. My neighbours must have been sick to death of it but never complained.
I consider it to be superior to the previous `Quartet' but still not as good as `Rage in Eden'. There are no duff tracks, but only one worthy of five stars - `One Small Day', an anthem for the frustrated man. The album as a whole is less innovative than previous releases in terms of song formats: there are no instrumentals and all songs are now arranged in a standard pop/rock structure. It feels as if the group are playing safe and looking forward to the international stadium-filling stardom that failed to arrive.
The main difference arising from the remastering is that which can be applied to all of the albums, namely the primary focus being placed on the guitar. The remastering equally makes the sound seem more distant: over there rather than right here. But the track that is most affected by the remastering is the stripped-back production now accorded to the opening track `White China'. It is barely recognisable from the original album. A `special mix' appears on the second CD just (and only just) makes up for the damage.
Indeed, it is the seventy-two minutes of the second disc that makes this package more than worthwhile. It's chock-full of extended versions, B-sides, and remixes.

No need for lamentations

This really is an awesome album.I saw the band when they toured Lament, stage draped in army rope/canvas sheeting.
Man of Two Worlds(non single track) was always my fave, very Celtic. But overall the album does not have a bad track.Lament, the song is a beautiful ballad,on a par with Vienna and Visions In Blue.White China is a oft neglected classic, and ofcourse the hits Dancing WithTears In My Eyes and One Small Day are included. Please buy this album, which sounds absolutely gorgeous in this extended remastered package.

This is a classy album from one of my favourite ever bands. I think asides the dedicated fans they did not get the respect they fully deserved, but but this along with any of their albums and you won't be dissapointed.

Definitive Indeed

This remastering is of the highest quality and so much better than the original CD release.
This was the age of the 12" remix, and disc two captures the spirit of the truly extended instrumental.
Highly recommended and worthy of the Definitive Edition tag line.
