Product description
Clannad ~ Macalla
Amazon.com
Macalla is hands down one of the strongest albums of Irish family band Clannad. Mournful, delicate, and deliciously down tempo, Macalla bridges the early traditional folk of the band with their later pop leanings, twining largely acoustic accompaniment with lead vocalist Maire Brennan's reflectively pliant pinings. Where early work was all sung in Irish, here all but two tunes are sung in English, effectively blending rooted Celtic musicianship with a more mainstream sound, helped along in no small part by a guest spot from U2's Bono on the evocative pop ballad, "In a Lifetime." Though early era fans may be put off with protestations of sellout, Macalla, next to Anam, is likely the record most appealing to fans on either end of the Clannad spectrum. --Paige La Grone

But, to return to Macalla (or "Echo" in English) - this is an album released in 1985, during a period when Clannad was still transitioning to the latter, more "accessible" sound, and is also one of their first albums to garner wider international acclaim. Thus, Macalla's first half is more pop and the second half is more folk but, overall, the album is well produced and manages to come across as a coherent whole with unmistakable Irish/Celtic-folk roots. While (personally) I like all the songs equally well, the album does include the better known Clannad songs "In a Lifetime," a duet between the Clannad lead vocals, Maire Brennan, and Bono (of U2 fame) and "Northern Skyline".
On to the technical - the CD recording I have (and review) here is the 1990 release by RCA (rather than the 2003 re-release: In most cases I find that the later, re-mastered, editions are technically inferior to the original releases and as such I try to get the original editions whenever possible). The album is well recorded, and preserves, to a good degree, the analog feel of the master tape. The use of the available dynamic range is adequate for a tape transfer (the signal peaks on average at 90dB, so there is plenty (6dB) of unused dynamic headroom). There is no clipping, no dynamic range compression and no other recording artifacts, save for some harshness in the upper registers, which is likely due to the anti-aliasing filters used during mastering (this I find quite typical of early '90 analog to digital transfers). This slight harshness in the highs is largely benign for casual listening but may become an issue in critical listening sessions (it certainly is noticeable in A/B comparisons with the 1985 vinyl recording when using headphones). On the S/N front, the noise seems to be well contained to better than -80dB.
Overall, I'd rate Macalla as a very good effort by Clannad and a very worthwhile listen - highly recommended.
Gaelic for the word echo, "Macalla" showcases the band's beautiful harmonies over a series of ten great compositions, all written by members of the band. They were still a five-piece then, and every member contributed songs. So, it was truly a family affair. The opening track, "Caislean Oir," is a powerful sister-track to "Theme from Harry's Game" from the "Magical Ring" album.
This CD contains the original recording remastered, liner notes, some nice pictures, and a bonus track of the Planet Heaven Mix of "Caislean Oir."
I've been a fan of Clannad for more years than I can count, and I've not found anything that they've ever done to be substandard. Their harmonies are tight and flawless. Their music fills the soul...
To visit their homeland, to see them perform on a stage or in a pub, is one thing I hope to experience one day. Ms. Brennan's voice is amazing beyond words...

David Sylvian、XTC
The album itself is excellent, and there's nothing to add to the other reviews. On the remastering I'm not particularly impressed. There's a little more detail, but nothing that's a revelation. The new bonus remix of the opening track is, I'm afraid, a disaster. It's so tried to take a tune, to add a driving beat, and call it a remix. And the opening is very ethereal, moody. This is destroyed in the remix. I suppose it's just not for me.
On the other hand, at least the remastered version has a decent booklet, the original release is rather sparse. The only downside of the new booklet is the horrid new cover art. You can get around it somewhat because - on the back page of the new booklet - the original artwork has been included (thank goodness).
So anyway, if you're looking to buy this disc, I'd say go with whatever the cheapest option is. The newer version is okay, but the new cover art and the needless remix are really poor.
It's certainly good music though!
